On this 12th day of Women’s History Month, we celebrate Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu and Murasaki Shikibu. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 Dr. Wu is known as the First Lady of Physics and was an ardent advocate for women in science, technology, engineering and math. She was the first female physics instructor at Princeton University, she worked on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University , and throughout her prestigious career she was the recipient of many awards and honors. 👩🏻‍🔬 Lady Murasaki was a master of the written word, a poet and the author of the world’s first novel, “The Tale of Genji.” She lived as a lady in waiting at the Imperial Court of Empress Shoshi and she kept a diary about her daily life and that of the Japanese court. Women's History Month 2019: Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997) was a Chinese-American experimental physicist who made significant contributions in the field of nuclear physics. Wu worked on the Manhattan Project, where she helped develop the process for separating uranium metal into uranium-235 and uranium-238 isotopes by gaseous diffusion. She is best known for conducting the Wu experiment, which contradicted the hypothetical law of conservation of parity. To create more awareness around the issue of gender prejudice and bias, the United Nations declared the 11 February as an official day to celebrate female progress in the STEM field. Unfortunately despite worldwide efforts less than 50% of STEM researchers globally are women. This post is dedicated to the many women who have made brilliant strides in the STEM field; their intellect, perseverance and contributions to science are valued. I picked a few of my favourites for this post; *Kadambini Ganguly: Indian doctor and the first South Asian female physician, trained in western medicine, to graduate in South Asia as well as the first female graduate from India. *Chien-Shiung Wu: Chinese experimental physicist who made significant contributions in the field of nuclear physics. *Helen Rodríguez Trías: Latina pediatrician, educator and women's rights activist. Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science Day. Here’s just a few trailblazers: Katherine Johnson: A NASA physicist and mathematician. She was one of the first women to join NASA and is credited for calculating the trajectory for the space flight of Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon. Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 by President Obama. Rosalind Franklin: A British scientist is credited to discovering the helix shape of DNA. James Watson and Francis Crick used her discovery in their articles, only crediting her work in a footnote, and later went on to receive the Nobel Prize in 1962 for their contributions to science. Maryam Mirzakhani: An Iranian mathematician became the first woman to ever win the Fields Medal-- known as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics". Mirzakhani was awarded the honor for her contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems. May-Britt Moser: A Norwegian neuroscientist who received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2014 for her work on the spatial reasoning capacity of the human brain. Chien Shiung Wu- A Chinese-American physicist who was regarded as the "First Lady of Physics". Wu is best known for the Wu Experiment and lauded for providing the "solution to the number one riddle of atomic and nuclear physics". She was overlooked for the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics when it was awarded to her two male colleagues, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang, for their work on theoretical aspect of the research. Mae Jemison: A NASA astronaut who became the first woman of color to travel in space during the Space Shuttle Endeavor in 1992. Jamison entered Stanford University at age 16 to study chemical engineering. She received her medical degree from Cornell and began a career as a physician for the Peace Corps Medical Officer in Africa. #chienshiungwu was an experimental physicist and one of the leading experts in her time on beta decay. During World War II, Chien began teaching at Princeton University and Smith College. She was soon asked to join the Manhattan Club Project at Columbia University – the army’s top-secret project to develop the atomic bomb. Chien’s job was to develop a process to enrich uranium ore that would produce large quantities of uranium for the bomb. After the war, she stayed at Columbia as a research assistant. Along with Dr. Tsung-Dao Lee and Dr. Chen Ning Yang, Chien overthrew a law of symmetry in physics called the “principle of conservation of parity.” Their discovery disproved what was a widely accepted “law” of nature – proving that science can overturn old laws. However, Chien was not credited for the discovery – instead, only Drs. Lee and Yang would go on to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery.Yet Chien would go on to make recognized contributions in her field. She became a full professor at Columbia University and the author of Beta Decay (1965). She was also the first Pupin Professor of Physics at Columbia, the first woman elected to the American Physical Society, the first woman to receive the Cyrus B. Babası Wu Zhongyi (吳仲裔), Wu’yu dönemin önemli Çinli filozof ve eğitimcilerinden Hu Shih’in derslerine katılmaya teşvik etmiştir. Babasıyla oldukça yakındı ve babası Wu’nun ilgilerini ona kitaplarla, dergilerle, gazetelerle sarılı olduğu bir ortam yaratarak teşvik etmeyi tutku haline getirmişti. Henüz 11 yaşındayken Suzhou Kadınlar ‘Normal Okulu-2’ye(Normal Okulu/Normal School lise mezunlarını öğretmen olarak eğiten okulların genel adıdır.) gitmek üzere evden ayrıldı. 1929 senesinde Wu Nanjing’deki Ulusal Merkezi Üniversite’ye başvurdu. Dönemin hükümet düzenlemeleri ‘’Normal Okul’’ mezunlarının üniversiteye gidebilmek için en az 1 yıl öğretmenlik yapmasını zorunlu kılıyordu. ⠀ ⠀ Bu nedenle 1929 yılını Hu Shih tarafından kurulmuş olan Şangay’daki Çin Halk Okulunda (中國公學) öğretmenlik yaparak geçirdi. 1930’dan 1934’e kadar Wu Ulusal Merkezi Üniversite’de eğitim gördü. Wu, master derecesini alınca Sinica Akademisinin Fizik Enstitüsü’nde araştırmacı olarak çalışmaya başladı. 1936 yılında ise Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ne taşındı. Michigan State Üniversitesi’nden olumlu cevap alması üzerine Taicang’lı bir kimyager olan arkadaşı Dong Ruofen (董若芬) ile birlikte Çin'den Amerika'ya uzun bir deniz yolculuğuna çıktı. İki arkadaş 1936’da San Francisco’ya vardı. Wu made history with an experiment that disproved the hypothetical Law of Conservation of Parity. She also became the first female professor in Princeton’s Physics Department and was a leading experimenter in the world of physics. ⚛️ . Until 1956 it was assumed that, when an isolated system of fundamental particles interacts, the overall parity (uniformity) remains the same or is conserved.
