Happy Presidents’ Day. Perhaps today is a good time to say a late farewell to the Bears Ears National Monument. The time I’ve spent over the years hiking in the canyons and across the mesas of this pristine network of public land has made me very attached to it. It is one of the most unique landscapes anywhere, and it would be a damned shame if the president and secretary of interior’s choice to lift its protection meant that it was destroyed. I can’t speak to the other monuments that met this fate, but I know the bears ears well enough to be very worried. • If you don’t know this country very well, the books “Desert Solitaire” by Edward Abbey, and “A Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold do a great job explaining why it’s one of the most special and fragile places on earth. RIP bears ears national monument. • #publicland#publiclandowner#nationalmonument#bearsears#bearsearsnationalmonument#wilderness#desert#slickrock#canyon#thepresidentstoleyourland#juniper#hiking#backpacking#deserthike#deserthiking#wildernessstudyarea#utah#lost#mesa#springweather#coloradoplateau#wildernesssurvival

The ranch gate at section 9 mile 6. At 6666 ft, with an unusual amount of snow for the elevation. Bryce horizon no longer visible in the snowstorm. Next reception section 7, after Round Valley Draw, near Grosvenor Arch/The Cockscomb. I’ve exited Bryce Canyon National Park. Currently: Winter on the #HaydukeTrail ❄️ #snow#mountaineering#archesnationalpark#ultrarunning#rockclimbing#bouldering#grandstaircaseescalantenationalmonument#grandstaircase#lakepowell#arizonatrail#bearsears ##bearsearsnationalmonument#canyoneering#pacificcresttrail#continentaldividetrail#coloradoriver#grandcanyon#utah#wanderlost#hayduke#coloradoriver There & back again, on the #HaydukeTrail /(❄️winter Hayduke Dec 21) I’ve exited Bryce Canyon National Park. Before tomorrow’s blizzard advisory. A long approach and exit requiring 30+ snowshoeing miles. This in addition to the 90 miles on Kaibab Plateau. Therefore approximately 120+ snowshoeing miles to date. It took me 10 days, Feb 3 - Feb 13, to hike from the base of the Kaibab Plateau, to and through Bryce Canyon. I’ve been carrying snowshoes since Saddle Canyon, roughly 350 miles ago. —— Slow miles through Bryce. Trail nonexistent, fully buried into the hillsides. North facing powder dumped so high into the furs making you think things like ‘is this for real’. South facing sloping to disaster on filled in crust, topped with crampon filling powder. Bushwhacking on-trail north side dark flats clogged with snow laden bent over trees. Non visible trail buried in powder requires a gps. Some of the slowest miles on trail, around 2 days for 12 miles, even with the tails. Bryce requiring over 30 continuous miles of snowshoeing to access and exit. Snow line below 6k this side, being roughly Skutumptuh Rd on either side of Bryce; or section 9 guidebook mile 27 to Willis Creek Narrows section end.

Some ups and downs for the Bears Ears area: The good news: In D.C., two congressional bills to expand Bears Ears back to their originally designated boundaries need your support. The Bears Ears National Monument Expansion Act (BEARS) Act, H.R. 871, introduced last month by Rep. Gallego and Rep. Haaland, now has 71 other co-sponsors and would expand Bears Ears to the originally proposed 1.9-million-acre-size. On the Senate side, Senators Tom Udall and Michael Bennet sponsored the Antiquities Act of 2019. This bill has 24 co-sponsors in the Senate and over 60 co-sponsors in the House, will protect every national monument ever established or expanded since 1996 and restore Bears Ears to the 1.35-million-acre Obama designation boundaries. It will also prevent U.S. presidents from revoking or reducing national monuments. The bad news: Bears Ears is located in San Juan county in Utah, and the new spirit of the San Juan County Commission, with its new Native American majority, has already been threatened by a proposal in the Utah Legislature that would allow the white minority in the county to secede and form a new county government. Even though it’s only been about two weeks since the new county leadership took office, Rep. Coleman introduced a bill, HB 93,  to enforce structural racism in San Juan County, known as “County Formation Amendment”. This bill will essentially segregate the county into white and Native American halves. This is not in line with the need for healing for the future envisioned by the Indigenous communities of the Bears Ears region. The bill will also allow a minority of county citizens to form a new county without input from other residents. This photo shows a unique geological formation, Raplee Ridge, which was removed from original Bears Ears designation for #oilandgas@protectwildutah#keepitpublic#findyourpark#bearsearsnationalmonument#environmental air force #conservationphotography#aerialphotography@protectbearsears

Chad is one of those people I knew I’d be friends with right away when I met him. Perhaps it’s because we both like the desert and beer, but I think it goes much deeper. He just has an openness to him, that you could have a meaningful conversation on every topic from deserts to mountains, from politics to pirates. And from climbing with him, I know he has this spirit of invention and improvisation; sure, the guy is missing part of his leg, but he’d rather figure out a solution to the task at hand than complain about it. HOVENWEEP national monument, in the rugged and beautiful UTAH, spilling over to southwestern Colorado!! 🌍 We came just after the government shut down but luckily enough they left out a bunch of maps with loads of information about the ruins, seeing it in person was the best example of early day masonry that is still standing (somewhat) today ! The motivation of these builders is inspiring as they have built on what seems like the most unstable land.. on cliffs and hanging boulders, making this once a community of over 2,500 people between 1200 -1300 A.D This is one of the few ruins we had the pleasure of exploring.. we will definitely share some more down the road as they are truly inspiring to see how hard working people were, striving to complete a community and thrive with what they've been given in this life. ✨ #cheapandcheerfultravellers#budgettraveller#vantastic#vanlife#ruins#hovenweep#nationalmonument#america#utah#colorado#cliffdwellers#explore#learn#befree#community#wanderlust#lovelife#bearsears#utahparks#bearsearsnationalmonument#canyons
