•| identity There is so much beauty in being African, we live in a continent where culture is our driving force from how we dress to all forms of beauty. For the African people hair is a form identity, not only cultural but individual identity. We have different hairstyles and treat it with so much attention. From locks, braids, con-rows they are all celebrated. Everyone has different hairstyles as it is an expression of beauty. Meet Feisal, I spotted at the jetty in Stone town and to be honest I have never seen this type of locks. They were huge and really looked wavy.

Imprisoned three times by the Nigerian government, Chris Abani turned his experience into poems that Harold Pinter called "the most naked, harrowing expression of prison life and political torture imaginable." His novels include GraceLand (2004) and The Virgin of Flames (2007). Chris Abani's first novel, published when he was 16, was Masters of the Board, a political thriller about a foiled Nigerian coup. The story was convincing enough that the Nigerian government threw him in jail for inciting a coincidentally timed real-life coup. Imprisoned and tortured twice more, he channeled the experience into searing poetry. Abani's best-selling 2004 novel GraceLand is a searing and funny tale of a young Nigerian boy, an Elvis impersonator who moves through the wide, wild world of Lagos, slipping between pop and traditional cultures, art and crime. It's a perennial book-club pick, a story that brings the postcolonial African experience to vivid life. Now based in Los Angeles, Abani published The Virgin of Flames in 2007. He is also a publisher, running the poetry imprint Black Goat Press. Our today's MCM happens to be no other person but @Chris Abani #Repost#istory#storyng#nigeria#MCM#MondayMotivation#mondaythoughts#africanwriters#nigerianwriters#africanstories#chrisabani#writingcommunity

Every time there is a post about "types of female friends you should have in your circle," or other associated topics, you always find some women in the comments saying things like "if only women can truly support each other," "if only women are not always jealous of each other," etc etc. I get that Nollywood taught us that the best friend might like your fiancee and 'snatch' him. And that your girlfriend may lie about you to your boss. There is the conditioning that makes us think that women just can't wish other women well. I'm also not saying this is never true; there are people who have gotten this hard knock from life. Men and women. Have you ever wondered if unconsciously, you repel the ones who could have been great friends because of the vibes you keep on giving out? Vibes of "you probably don't truly wish me well and we're all just pretending in this friendship".• • To make these statements the singular truth is to rob yourself the chance of building a tribe of women who just want to grow and cheer with their friends while building the life they desire.

South African artist Nelson Makamo's painting is the cover of Time magazine's special edition edited by Ava DuVernay. Nelson's work is strongly influenced by the candid innocents of children. He is particularly drawn to children in rural South Africa, he believes that they embody the peace and harmony we all strive for in life, the search for eternal joy lies in the child within us all, we are just so consumed with worldly things that we forget the simplicity of life through a child's perspective. He evolved his scope of experience so did his medium of expression, namely charcoal, acrylic, water colours, mono-types, silk screen and oil paintings.  #art#identity#africanstories#painting#africanartists#nelsonmakamo#painter #southafrica#expression#freedomofexpression#culture#storyteller#exhibition#artwork#artforsocialchange#rural

Have you seen this? How does it make you feel? Sad, angry, disappointed, or all of the above? I first saw it on a friend's WhatsApp status and I quickly snapped it, ready to share on my own status. But just before my emotions got the best me, the voice in my head quietly asked, does this only happen in Nigeria? As a partial CNN addict, one who would listen to CNN all day in the office and still tune in CNN as soon as I get back home, it wasn't hard for me to come up with the names of American and world political leaders to compare with. So I did some searching and here's a list of what I found; Mohammadu Buhari - 76yrs Atiku Abubakar - 72yrs Donald Trump - 72yrs Theresa May - 62yrs Hilary Clinton - 71yrs Xi Jinping - 65yrs Vladimir Putin - 66yrs Joe Biden - 76yrs Bernie Sanders - 77yrs Elizabeth Warren - 69yrs Nancy Pelosi - 78yrs Let's even dig deeper into this and see if age really affects a nation on that real important matter of economic growth and productivity. I did some findings on the fastest growing economies in the world for 2018 and decided to check the age of the leader of those nations. Here's what I found in descending order; Ghana → Nana Akufo-Addo → 74yrs Ethiopia → About Ahmed → 42yrs India → Narendra Modi → 68yrs Cote d'Ivoire → Alassane Oauttara → 77yrs Djibouti → Ismail Omar Guelleh → 72yrs Cambodia → Hun Sen → 66yrs Bhutan → Jigme Sinye Wangchuck → 38yrs Senegal → Mackay Shall → 57yrs Tanzania → John Magufuli → 59yrs Philippines → Rodrigo Duterte → 73yrs CLICK THR LINK IN MY BIO TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE. #CNN#CNNAfrica#StephanieBusari#Africa#Nigeria#Elections#Stories#AfricanStories#AfricanNews#StoryTelling#Perspectives#Naratives#Past#Present#Future#APC#PDP#NewNigeria

#Repost@reclaimthecitysa with @get_repost ・・・ Pine Road families have been made homeless after a second fire in a year destroyed their homes. The families have been promised rooms at the new Pickwick Site for transitional housing that Council approved in 2017 for families in need of emergency accommodation. The first transitional housing built 5km away from the inner city. Despite being completed last year, the Pickwick sure remains empty because they havnt appointed a manager. Occupied Cissie Gool House in Woodstock is the only place currently that provides emergency housing in the area but Reclaim the City can’t intervene because the City interdicted occupiers from helping any more people who have been made homeless. A story telling, Bonfire and drumming night @thegreenhousegh . Come, let's have fun and share the stories of Mama Africa. In Northern Ghana we call the drumming instrument #Abongo (Djembe).. The djembe is one of West Africa's best known instruments. This goblet-shaped drum is traditionally carved from a single piece of African hardwood and topped with an animal skin as a drumhead. In western understanding, the drum belongs to the membranophone class of instruments in the percussion family. #africa#ghanaculture#africanstories#africatravel#travelghana ##experience#world_bnw#drums#tradition#traditional_art#travellocal#karamenga#blackhistorymonth#traveller#yearofreturnghana#blackhistorymonth#blacktravelmovement#blacktravelfeed#ecotourisme#tourist#tourism#tourghana

Can’t wait to read this book! .... and watch the movie. . It’s the story of William Kamkwamba, the 13-year-old Malawian boy who was thrown out of the school he loved when faced with a crippling famine and his family could no longer afford the tuition fees. . He sneaked into the library and after reading a book called ‘Using Energy’, decided to create a makeshift wind turbine so that he could build a windmill to save his village from the famine. . He experimented with a small model using a cheap dynamo and other bits from a scrap yard. . Eventually he made a functioning wind turbine that powered some electrical appliances in his family's house. . His ingenuity soon caught the attention of the world and in 2007 he was flown to the USA where he gave a TedTalk. . His speech moved the audience, and several venture capitalists at the conference pledged to help finance his secondary education. . He later in 2014, went on to graduate from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire (USA). . His story has now been made into a (Netflix) movie, directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor. ——————- #inspired#determination#tenacity#afroexcellence#theafricanchild#educationisvaluable#gotoschool#teachyourself#africans#africanparent#africanempowerment#africaneducation#malawi#Chiwetelejiofor#afrobooks#africanstories#williamkamkwamba#bookaddict#booklover#bookish#bookstagram#Inspirekids#blackboys#raisingblackboys#blackrolenmodels
