This year’s Afrikans On Film Festival at @clfartcafe was always lit. Well curated and organised and, incredibly, still totally free! Big ups to my man @artterryband - see second pic- for helping to make it happen. Saw some deep short films, in particular ‘Entitled’ by @adeyemimichael, who spoke afterwards passionately about his inspiration for the film honouring his mother’s majesty through the metaphor of depicting her riding through Peckham on a black horse. #afrikansonfilmfestival#clfartcafe#artterry#adeyemimichael#peckham#nigerian#yoruba#blackbritish#blackwoman#blackqueen

The impact of Hew Locke’s work is impossible to capture, but this piece ‘Veni Vidi Vici’ was just the right opener for @zakove’s inspired exhibition ‘Get Up Stand Up Now’, encapsulating the spirit of carnival insurrection and subversion. #hewlocke#getupstandupnow#somersethouse#zakove#blackbritish#subversiveart#contemporaryart#contemporaryartist#londonart

I was so happy to finally see at ‘Get Up Stand Up Now’ work by @nickcaveart, after missing his show at @glasgowtramway. These two pieces ‘Soundsuit’ and Arm Peace’ are very different, but share a similar blossoms theme and the same attention to detail. I originally thought the Soundsuits were inspired by the Yoruba egungun and other West African traditions of ancestor veneration through dance masquerades. However, Nick Cave’s signature Soundsuits originated as metaphorical suits of armor in response to the Rodney King beatings and have evolved into vehicles for empowerment, concealing race, gender and class. Arm Peace is a memorial using a cast of Cave’s own arm, commenting on gun violence and the deaths inflicted both on and within the Black community. #nickcaveartist#soundsuit#soundsuits#rodneyking#armpeace#stoptheviolence#getupstandupnow#somersethouse#zakove

In my @victorekpuk T-shirt in a @victorekpuk space. 😊 If you haven’t yet seen ‘Get Up Stand Up Now’ at @somersethouse, today is your last chance. It’s more than just a collection of some of the most inventive exciting Black artists over the last 40 years. It’s an exploration of how the personal connections between artists and our overwhelming sense of community across the African diaspora has helped us to find joy in resistance and blossom in creative expression through several generations. What stood out most for me was the narrative thread that the curator @zakove weaves, using the work of his father filmmaker and photographer Horace Ove to establish the links between the Black British artists of the 70s and Black political activists, their joint attempts to forge a place for us in this country, as symbolised by the insurrectionary playful spirit of carnival. The piece that made the most impact on me was ‘Who Needs A Heart’, a 1991 film by the Black Audio Film Collective, directed by @johnakomfrah, which explores the forgotten history of the British Black Panthers and adds depth and perspective to one of its foremost leaders Michael Abdul Malik aka Michael X. The intensely rich colours of the cinematography and the often asynchronous sound design create a sense of claustrophobic delirium grounded by the archive footage of Michael X. I was lucky enough to bump into @zakove outside Charing Cross on his way to the exhibition and I did a bit of a gush which he was gracious enough to listen to. He said he was intimidated by curating so many other artists for the first time and wondering whether they would complain about the positioning of their works. But I forgot to ask him if he knew whether Ishmahil Blagrove had really stood outside Piccadilly Arcade with his Carnival Trolley back in April. You only have a few hours left to catch the exhibition. Don’t miss it! #getupstandupnow#zakove#somersethouse#blackbritish#blackdiaspora#africandiaspora#blackatlantic#horaceove#londonart#johnakomfrah#blackaudiofilmcollective#blackpower#michaelx#michaelabdulmalik#ishmahilblagrove#victorekpuk#victorekpukwearableart

Looking at ‘We Came To America’ by Faith Ringgold is like doing 3 or 4 rounds in the ring with Ali at his prime. She captures the trauma of the middle passage like no other artist has ever done, at the same time making a clear statement about the founding principles of USA and the continuing hypocrisy of its ruling classes over the last 400 years. There is a theory that the original design of Lady Liberty by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was of a Black woman who held in her left hand broken shackles representing the end of slavery. The accuracy of this theory has been widely debated, but what is more interesting is the reaction of Black newspapers in the 19th century to the project. The Washington Post reports that they “railed against it as meaningless and hypocritical. By 1886, Reconstruction had been crushed, the Supreme Court has rolled back civil rights protections, and Jim Crow laws were tightening their grip” #faithringgold#wecametoamerica#huddledmasses#middlepassage#slavetrade#quilt#serpentinegallery#serpentine#londonart

Feel so lucky to have caught the Faith Ringgold retrospective at @serpentineuk on the final day. What an amazing trajectory her work took, from the early superrealist satirical American Hero paintings through her intimate quilt folk stories to the monumental quilt depictions of the American Nightmare of the 90s. #faithringgold#americanhero#contemporaryart#contemporaryartist#serpentinegallery#londonart

Carnival Trolley’ by Ishmahil Blagrove JR in ‘Get Up Stand Up Now’ curated by @zakove at @somersethouse. A few months back, I was about to cut through ultra posh Piccadilly Arcade to get to Piccadilly and I saw at the arcade entrance, a stocky brother standing resolutely almost to attention beside a strange trolley with fetishes and bright painted revolutionary slogans on wood. A tinny loudspeaker blared out music, I think Fela Kuti. He stood motionless staring at everyone who entered and exited the arcade. I wondered if he was doing a classic wind-up-whitey routine, challenging the well heeled shoppers who looked somewhat bemused. So, I tried to engage him in conversation and asked if I could take his photo. The dude reacted like I had thrown a handful of scorpions at him, hissing me away. I’m convinced that he was Ishmahil Blagrove with his artwork ‘Carnival Trolley’ but I’m at a loss to explain why he was stood alone outside Piccadilly Arcade. Can any artworld people illuminate? #ishmahilblagrove#ishmahilblagrovejr#getupstandupnow#somersethouse#blackbritish#contemporaryart#contemporaryartist#grenfell#grenfelltower#remembergrenfell#neverforget#justice4grenfell#baronsamedi#guede#baronkriminel#loa#vodun#vodoun

I finally went to ‘Get Up Stand Up Now’, the amazing group exhibition curated magnificently by @zakove at @somersethouse. I also got to hear Linton Kwesi Johnson and Caryl Phillips talk on the same day, which was like watching two veterans reminisce about the battles they’d seen. But I only saw half the exhibition. Just one more week to see the rest. ‘Boys’ by @lavar.munroe.studio was my favourite of the first half of the exhibition. #getupstandupnow#zakove#somersethouse#lavarmunroe#contemporaryart#contemporaryartist#londonart

‘Typical’ at @sohotheatre is outstanding, the best theatre I’ve seen for years! I saw sides and parts of @richardblackwood that I didn’t know existed. Didn’t know he could move his body in so many different ways. The writing by Ryan Calais Cameron dances a fantastic boombastic riddim. The direction by @anastasiaoseikuffour is lithe and keeps a relentless pace. I didn’t know what the show was about when my friend @agboluajeoladipo invited me. When I realised, I was completely floored. Don’t miss this show! On until 28 September. #typical#sohotheatre#richardblackwood#christopheralder#blackbritish#blackbritishtheatre#homemanchester#tiatafahodzi#talawa
