With a chick chick here, 🐥 and a chick chick there, 🐥 here a chick, 🐥there a chick, 🐥 everywhere a chick chick! 🐓 Or in this #endoftheweekendpapers image, roosters all over the barnyard of Die Unsterbliche Kiste by Alexander Moszkowski (Berlin, 1908). As we make our way through the German humor books, we continue to find some of the most delightful writers, graphic designs, illustrations, and end papers, including this one. Moszkowski (1851-1934), was a German satirist, playwright, journalist, and editor of the humor magazine Lustige Blätter; brother of composer Moritz Moszkowski (find his compositions in the Art & Music Center); and oh, yes, friend of Albert Einstein. #endpapers#AlexanderMoszkowski#Germanhumor#hereachickthereachick#scowah#sfplbookarts#chickensofinstagram#sfpubliclibrary#iglibraries#librariesofinstagram@mcforys !

Seriously, when was the last time you saw a green stained #foreedge! Our usually observed fore edge stains are the reds and the much-loved blues (as in Aldine Press blue). But we made this delightful discovery in the German humor books (yes, still cataloging!). This green stained fore edge is from Die Neunzehnte Versammmlung Deutscher Naturforscher und Vertze (Leipzig, 1842). The Friday antidote to all this rain, cold, thunder and lightning, helping us to remember that Spring is just around the corner. #foreedgefriday#germanhumor#scowah#1842#sfplbookarts#sfpubliclibrary#iglibraries#librariesofinstagram

To our Valentine, J. W. Eccles, who we believe, is the same Mr. Eccles who observed the heavens and reported several meteors in 1852, as recorded in “A Catalogue of Observations of Luminous Meteors,” in Report of the Twenty-Second Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science; Held at Belfast in September 1852. This lace envelope is addressed to Mr. J. W. Eccles, all that remains of a romantic Valentine from about 1851. We’d like to think that Mr. Eccles observed the heavens with his star-crossed lover. 💘 From the Duane Weston Valentine Collection. #afinelibraryromance#victorianvalentine#laceenvelope#duanewestoncollection#sfplbookarts#sfpubliclibrary#iglibraries#librariesofinstagram#loveinthelibrary

Dressed in all its finery, this little beauty has a golden panel design made up of a fleurs-de-lys dentelle, over-the-top fillet ornamentation, gilt spine, all tooled on dark red Morocco. As if this is not enough, the book has been printed by the great Aldus Manutius; one of the last books out of the press under the direction of the maestro himself.
