Can anyone help me identify this stone? I found it under a bridge, it has a hole in the bottom and top, so I’m wondering if it was from a necklace or bracelet maybe. I think it could be Aventurine. Possibly part of a Hindu offering maybe. I wet it to show its colour, the last picture shows it dry. #Mudlarking#modlarking#thamesforeshorefinds#mudlark#mudlarkingfinds#thamesforeshore#london#riverthames#thameslondon#swlondon#bottledigging#bottledigginguk#treasure#treasurehunting#history#thameshistory#londonhistory#aventurine#helpid#green#greenstone#gem#gemstones

Have you ever wondered where the oldest pub in London is? You're not alone. Historians still can't seem to agree where it is. Is it Ye Olde Mitre, believed to have been built in 1546? Is it the Lamb & Flag, built circa 17th Century. Or the Cittie Of York, which has been the site of an inn since 1420? 🤷🏽 As historians can't seem to choose, why not cast your vote for one of the pubs on our list. Let us know in the blog comments. 🍻 And the last one to click the link in our bio buys the first round.

I love little things like this old Solidox toothpaste tube. There’s a particular spot I visit that has lots of little old rolled up paint tubes. Well, I picked a couple up and now it’s a ‘thing’ and I’ve got quite a few! They all have a small amount of paint still inside. This was a nice find as you can read some of the writing on the tube. . . .#mgxlondon#london#lovelondon#towerbridge#londonhistory#cityoflondon#prettycitylondon#spanishinlondon#londonwithkids#mgxlondonkids#londonforkids#londresconniños#planesenlondres#travellingwithkids

Unbelievable story. Sarah Forbes Bonetta (1843–1880), was captured at the age of five by raiders from Dahomey in west Africa, and sent to England as a "gift" for Queen Victoria from King Ghezo of Dahome. She was educated in Brighton, where she married Nigerian merchant James Pinson Labulo in 1862, and later returned to Africa. Queen Victoria was godmother to her first child, Victoria. #londonhistory#londonlife#london#historyoflondon#londoninblackandwhite#oldlondon#ilovelondon#insterlondon#history#londonlover#londonlove#city#blackandwhitephotography#historyincolor#historyinblackandwhite#blackhistory#blackwoman#blackvictorians

Horses drive traffic on London's Oxford Street in 1890. According to author Lee Jackson, by the 1890s, the city's horses produced approximately 1,000 tons of dung a day. In fact, by the 1890s, there were approximately 300,000 horses and 1,000 tons of dung a day in London. What the Victorians did, Lee says, was employ boys ages 12 to 14 to dodge between the traffic and try to scoop up the excrement as soon as it hit the streets. "It was an immense and impossible challenge," Lee says. On what it was like to walk around Victorian London The first thing you'd notice if you stepped out onto the streets would be the mud that lined the carriageways, but of course it wasn't really mud. The air itself was generally filled with soot and smoke. It was famously said of the sheep in Regent's Park — there were still grazing sheep in Regent's Park in the mid-Victorian period — that you could tell how long they'd been in the capital by how dirty their coats were. They [went] increasingly from white to black over a period of days. If you were a respectable person, you had to wash your face and hands several times during the day to make sure that you looked half decent. ... You had the stench from blocked drains and cesspools below houses. It wasn't really a pleasant experience. #londonhistory#londonlife#london#historyoflondon#londoninblackandwhite#oldlondon#ilovelondon#insterlondon#history#londonlover#londonlove#city#blackandwhitephotography#historyincolor#historyinblackandwhite#horsehistory#londonhorse

A walk yesterday through Hoxton and Shoreditch High St. It was a circular walk starting from Liverpool St Station. Tge area at the back of the station was theatreland. The site of the Curtain Theatre is currently being developed into the Stage. This was the original Shakespeare Theatre. There was also The Theatre nearby owned by James Burbage which moved to the Southbank and became The Globe. (1) is St Monica's in Hoxton Square built by Pugin. (2) is in neighbouring Hoxton Market. It was an electric station and is now a circus school. (3) is the view of Pitfield St looking towards Old St and the City Amidst the restored houses there is still a timber merchants giving an insight into its past (4). Further up Pitfield St is Shoreditch College building with its impressive portico (5). Buildings like this give the impression of villages and communities that were swallowed up by Greater London. (6) is walking up Hoxton St and shoes the Unicorn pub and the former premises of St Leonard's Offices for the Relief of the Poor. One of the many smart buildings in the area. (7) is Geffrye Museum on Kingsland Rd which was a row of Alms Houses. I must visit it one day. (8) is further down the road. I am not sure what the purpose of the main structure, but it made for a sculptural viewpoint with the modern glass building behind. The final picture is The Bishopsgate Institute which is for adult education, keeping to it's original purpose. The beautiful facade was built by the same architect as the Whitechapel Gallery, Charles Henry Townsend. I did a tour of the institute a few years ago as part of Open House which is next weekend. The institute houses a library as well as meeting rooms. Well worth a visit. #hoxton,#shoreditch,#Londonwalks,#walkinglondon,#londonarchitecture,#londonhistory,#geffryemuseum,#kingslandroad,#openhouse,#londonopenhouse,#charleshenrytowsend

Wow. History for Monday. Of the 55 livery halls, only eight, including Cooks' Hall, survived the Great Fire of London in 1666. The Master of the time, who had been made homeless in the conflagration, petitioned the King to allow him to use part of the Hall as a temporary abode. In 11 May 1674 the Company decided to build a new Hall. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Greenwich Foot Tunnel. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Opened in 1902, the Greenwich Foot Tunnel cuts 50 feet deep below the surface to transport pedestrians under the River Thames from Greenwich to the Isle of Dogs. I have long been fascinated by the bridges and tunnels that traverse the river, or I should say, 'what' they represent beyond functionally and why they are so significant. Little wonder this oddly echoing passage, beneath the Thames, has been the location of numerous unexplained and paranormal occurrences. It is said that the spirit of an eight year old girl has communicated with ghost hunters on several occasions. Others report a 'heavy' presence. Perhaps these occurrences can be attributed to those, whose bodies were moved during it's construction. It is an eerie passage, that joins and divides the underworld..water trickling in rivulets down the walls like the molecular, acidic saliva of an unseen alien; phosphorescent lights flicker and hum above..for, certainly, it may as well exist outside any navigated inter-cosmic dimension. A crawl space for the inhabitants of 'The Underfoot..' representing a means, not just for physical, but, metaphysical travel throughout the territory - a no-man's land,..one that exists between the human and spirit worlds..an inner ether within the membrane of the earth's surface, that holds ancestral and cellular memory. Tunnels are the components of the hidden, spiritual landscape and the sacred places of the mind; those of the imagination, the obscured and the forgotten...

Another lovely, touristy day. I popped into the free and rather great London Mithraeum but today's highlight was Dr Johnson's House. Besides being endlessly quotable (you've heard "tired of London, tired of life"—that was him) he was impressively egalitarian for a rich white man in the 1700s. Ardently anti-slavery, he was 'gifted' a Jamaican slave after his wife died and not only paid for him to be educated but also made him his heir. He was misogynistic (because 18th century) but did believe that women could be intellectual and he actively supported women's education too, even teaching his friends' daughters Latin. While it can feel like modern thinking has a way to go, I'll bet the view from this window has changed a lot over the past 250 years. . . . . . . . . . . . . #drjohnsonshouse#heritageopendays#historyoflondon#historiclondon#londonhistory#sightsoflondon#londonlandmarks#cityoflondon#london#londonlife#mylondonlife#thisislondon#londonlove#london_is#visitlondon#gramminginlondon#hiddenlondon#secretlondon#londonbylondoners#discoverlondon#discoveringlondon#explorelondon#exploringlondon#seemorelondon#stayandwander#littlestoriesofmylife#womenwhowander#historicengland#visitbritain#lovegreatbritain

In Old Street, this clock looks back! Bang on theme, this is Moorfields Eye Hospital, founded in 1805. I was surprised to learn that ophthalmology (fancy word of the day meaning a branch of medicine that deals with diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders) was as recent as the early 1800s. Previously the domain of quacks and frauds, when the Napoleonic wars came around, there was an epidemic of trachoma (like conjunctivitis, or to use the *technical* term; “pink eye”) because of the unsanitary conditions. In response to the number of cases a new hospital was founded. In 1897 it moved to this location on City Road and today it’s part of the NHS and is the leading provider of eye health services in the UK. #lookuplondon . . . New blog post! 🎉❤️ Two mothers and two Foundlings. Two strands of a story woven together. Link in the description. • "Then came the moment she was dreading, the moment she’d wept about. But in reality, the process was very quick. Over in a heartbeat. One moment, the heartbeat was in her arms, the next, in the arms of a stranger. Suddenly, her arms felt awkward, empty, surplus to requirement. She tucked a loose curl back into her hair. She brushed her hands self-consciously down her apron. Her arms ached to do anything to prevent the acknowledgment that this was their reality now." • • • #blogpost#foundlingmuseum#foundlinghospital#coram#foundling#childrenscharity#londonmuseums#historiclondon#beautifullondon#londonhistory#historynerd#londonlove#londonlife#londonbylondoners#creativewriting#travelblog#londonblog#femaletravelblogger#londonguide#bluebadgeguide#londontourist#ramblinglondon#ramblinglondontours

So.... My news about this little ring is that it’s actually GOLD! (Update) Or possibly brass!! 😂. I gave it an Aladdin style rub on Friday evening and it started glinting at me! After a couple of days gentle cleaning, here it is! Swipe to see it when I found it, I also popped a garnet in it ❤️ Does anyone have any idea on the age of this? There’s no hallmark, my experts are suggesting it’s medieval! 🤭 It’s been an exciting day, found my first lead token and fell in the bloody river whilst being rescued after I got cut off. The tide came in very suddenly as I was on an island near my hotspot. A friendly boat owner came to my rescue in his kayak, but it tipped over and dumped us in the river! 😂 We both had to wade over, it was up to my waist! Thankfully my finds were safe, apart from a nice old jar that I was using to bale out the water from the bottom of my kayak before it went over. He even loaned me some dry clothes to go home in 😂😂😂 Yes, I am very stupid. #Mudlarking#modlarking#thamesforeshore#mudlark#mudlarkingfinds#thamesforeshorefinds#london#riverthames#thameslondon#swlondon#bottledigging#bottledigginguk#treasure#treasurehunting#kayaking#thameshistory#londonhistory#oldgoldrings#oldgold#thamesgold#rivergold#garnet#findinggold#goldfinger#oldjewellery#oldjewelry#oldring#medieval#medievaljewelry#medievaljewellery

Found on the Thames foreshore. A mix of mostly Staffordshire Combed Slipware - one of these was a hefty piece! And also tin-glazed London delftware of course. I ready like how crisp the manganese pink line is on the one at the bottom which I think is an apothecary jar base. Also the brightness of the yellow on the one in the middle after so many decades in the mud! There’s a piece of Westerwald on the left. #mudlarking#mudlarkingfinds#slipware#delftware#londondelftware#tinglazedearthenware#beachpottery#beachcombing#pottery#ceramics#antiquepottery#antiqueceramics#urbanarchaeology#relics#londonhistory
