So glad you were able to get your copy in the end! 💖📖 #Repost@juliabrary ・・・ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Despite the 70-ish unread books I own. Despite my packed reading plan. Despite my many readalongs. Despite my dying bank account... I ordered my copy of The Things I Would Tell You. . I’ve been meaning to read it ever since @sofia_reading mentioned it in one of her stories (highlighted, I think). I will need it for my PhD and I’m beyond excited to dive into Muslim women texts, which I have never read yet. AND, it’s @oursharedshelf’s choice for January and February. Anything that @emmawatson chooses, I am bound to love. . I want to warmly thank Chloé from @saqibooks for helping me placing my order. Rarely have I been such a liability. I mixed up “State” and “Country” and wrote an email to ask if they shipped to France (I know. I know.🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️), and then I made no less than THREE mistakes in the address, sending panicked emails to Chloé who kindly corrected them (on a Saturday!). Chloé, if you rolled your eyes more than once, I totally understand you. Still, Chloé wrote a personal message for me, and added this adorable bookmark. You’ve gotta love this indie publishers! Thank you Chloé!! . Will you take part in @oursharedshelf’s book club? I sure took the book with me to Paris (along with three others because you never know in which mood you will be!). . Happy Sunday peeps! . —— #bookblogger#bookreviewers#bloggingforbooks#thelitbooks#bookfeatures#currentlyreading#nonfiction#readwomen#writersofcolour#muslimwomen#muslimwriters#thethingsiwouldtellyou#oursharedshelf#indiepublishers

#herstory 🕌📚🏫🧕🏽“We have a young Arab Muslim woman named #FatimaAlFihri to thank for establishing the university system as we know it today. In 859 CE, Al-Fihri founded the University of Al-Qarawiyyin in Fes, Morocco, which is recognized by the United Nations as the oldest existing continually operating university in the world, as well as the first to award degrees. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to holding the title for the world’s oldest university, the Al-Qarawiyyin Library is regarded as the oldest in the world, and it preserves some of Islam’s most valuable manuscripts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s home to more than 4,000 works by respected scholars from across the region, including texts as treasured and rare as a 9th century Quran. In its prime, the library was “a bridge of knowledge of researchers, between Africa and between the Middle East and Europe,” Abdullah al-Henda, a member of the library’s restoration team, told NPR. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born in modern-day Tunisia in the 9th century, Al-Fihri grew up in a well-educated and well-to-do family...Al-Fihri and her sister Mariam were lucky to have their curiosity of the world supported and encouraged by their family and environment...The untimely deaths of her father, husband, and brother in quick succession left Al-Fihri searching for new purpose, however. Endowed with a sizable inheritance from their father, Fatima and Mariam were gifted great financial independence, and with it, opportunity. As devoted religious students, the sisters were moved to put their newfound wealth back into the community in which they’d grown up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Al-Fihri was involved from the ground up, from managing all the details of its construction—during which she fasted in the tradition of Ramadan for two years until the project was complete—to establishing it as an educational center where the community could gather and learn.” ✏️💓 excerpts from a piece written by @aylinz for @girlboss (March 27, 2018) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #thethingsiwouldtellyou#feminist

Hello g
Great review! 📖 Stunning photo! 📸🧡#Repost@khubaibliophile ・・・ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hello guys!! So, I opened this exciting #bookmail only because you guys voted to see it. 😬😬 . This book made me excited like a teenager. Yes, with age, the things that will make you feel excited would be on a diminishing curve. So, I was eyeing this book for months and months but when Hermione @emmawatson added it to her reading club @oursharedshelf for Jan-Feb, I wanted to get my hands to it so bad that I literally begged @saqibooks to send me a copy. And they're so sweet to send it all the way from London. . . Thank you Elizabeth and Hassan for the trouble. . So, about the book, The Things I Would Tell You (British Muslim Women Write) is an anthology of a variety of narratives and writing styles - fiction, memoir, opinion, poetry, drama - that reflects the richness of these women's works. The authors take us from Karachi to Algiers, Palestine to New York, Yemen to Somalia, and eventually, we end up rooted in Britain. . This ground-breaking collection, edited by @sabrinamahfouz , blows away the narrow image of the Muslim Women. To read further about the book read @ilhamreads blog post. The link is in her bio. . This is the second time I am going to be a part of @oursharedshelf and I can't contain the excitement. 🕺🕺 . . . #thethingsiwouldtellyou#allkindsofmagic#hyggelife#darkphotography#photooftheday#stilllife_perfection#met_createchange#sabrinamahfouz#kamilashamsie#leilaaboulela#britishmuslims#muslimwomen#emmawatson#oursharedshelf#goodreads#botm#literature#bookstagramuk#london#londoners#saqibooks#bookstagram#india#aligarh#feminist#anthologies#tealovers#red

We're glad you enjoyed it!💪💜#Repost@jennmeadows2010 ・・・ while the snow was falling, i curled up with @oursharedshelf's january/february selection, "the things i would tell you: british muslim women write" edited by @sabrinamahfouz. this anthology took my breath away. from the short stories, to the essays, to the poetry, to the scripts, these authors gave me a glimpse into the many different ways to identify as a muslim woman in the west. i'm forever thankful that @oursharedshelf keeps introducing me to books to help challenging my feminism to grow and become more intersectional. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - - - #bookstagram#thethingsiwouldtellyou#oursharedshelf#feminism#bookworm#intersectionalfeminism#feminist#feministreads#snowday#reading#fortheloveofbooks#librarybooks

🎉 🍰 Our Shared Shelf is 3! 🎂🎈 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dear Our Shared Shelf, ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are delighted to say that OSS celebrates its 3rd birthday today (January 8th)! From our very first book 'My Life on the Road' by @gloriasteinem, to our most recent selection, 'The Things I Would Tell You: British Muslim Women Write' edited by @sabrinamahfouz, the breadth of intersectional feminist discussions between Our Shared Shelf members has inspired a practice of perpetual growth for us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you all for making Our Shared Shelf what it is today! Three years of sharing intersectional feminist ideas has flown by like a really good book you don't want to end. Lovely words 🥰 and this pic is so cozy!🧣☕ 👍 #Repost@pardonmywritings ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Reading The Things I Would Tell You was like coming home and knowing that you're safe. That you're understood. Finally. A collection of stories, plays, poetry and commentaries, British women of colour lay their voice on the frustrating and tiresome image of the 'Muslim woman'. From Islamic Tinder to a grandmother who was a former prostitute, I loved that the book included literary heavy weights like Leila Aboulela as well as first time published Nafeesa Hamid and a 14 year old student from a local school near me. ~ Some of my highlights: - Kamila Shamsie's 'The Girl Next Door' on talk show maulanas forcing a caller to divorce his wife. - Shaista Aziz's 'Blood and Broken Bodies' is a cry for help for Pakistani brothers and dads to look at themselves and not God when they honour kill. - Azra Tabassum 'Brown Girl and other poems' is everything I wanted to hear growing up.

💗#Repost@ilhamreads ・・・ Guys, AWESOME news! This anthology was chosen by @emmawatson as book of the month for her book club @oursharedshelf! This is amazing, because it means hundreds if not thousands of people will be reading it, thousands will actually read and listen to the voices of Muslim women! I’m so thrilled about this, and I’m so happy to have a copy so I can read along, again! I also reviewed it, you can find the link to the article in my bio (it’s the second link in my Linktree).
