I painted this piece, titled “Splashing Pebbles,” for my veterinary college. It will permanently hang on the walls and help remind myself and other future veterinarians that chickens are full of personality and can be every bit as much of a pet as a dog or cat can. This chicken was one of my own girls, “Pebbles,” who sadly passed away this last year. #backyardchickens#watercolor#art#mottledhoudan#painting#petchickens

Bird brains have historically been viewed as simpler than mammal brains. This assumption has recently been overturned by studies showing that there are several functional similarities in the brains of birds and mammals – allowing for similar cognitive abilities. The avian forebrain (the part of the brain involved in problem-solving and other higher-order cognitive capacities) originates from the same type of nervous tissue as the mammalian forebrain – providing additional evidence for similar cognitive capacities between birds and mammals. #chickens#chickensofinstagram#veterinaryscience#backyardchickens#frizzlechicken
