Mayra, 17, looks to the sky at her village in #Guatemala on a visit home from her boarding school. At just 16, Mayra successfully lobbied in court against her child marriage with the support of local aid organization Fundaeco. She was the first indigenous girl in her community to take this bold step. Mayra’s #confidence and intelligence was clear to the judge. He was impressed with her empowered demeanor and ruled in her favor. Mayra says “I don’t want to be given to a man, my dream is to study. It is my right.” Fundaeco’s core belief is simple: you cannot preserve the natural environment without empowering women and girls. Mayra now has a scholarship to study environmental conservation. Her village is surrounded by lush jungle and breathtaking flora which she will now help protect in the years to come. #PhotographyForGood by @carolguzy | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#climatewarriors#forceofnature#empowerwomen#conservation#inspiration#photojournalism#rippleeffectimages

Happy Valentine’s Day from @rippleeffectimages! May your day be full of happiness, hope and joy. Today we celebrate the love and fierce commitment that women globally have to their families and loved ones. Here, the Sundarban Region in #India has been devastated by annual flooding, leaving its populations in a constant state of poverty. Aid organization Bandhan has provided these local women with training and supplies for textile and embroidery work. This will help lift them out of poverty and gain economic independence despite the growing threat of #climatechange.#PhotographyForGood by @anniegriffithsphotography | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#happyvalentinesday#valentine#love#joy#smile#everydayindia#photojournalism#rippleeffectimages www.rippleeffectimages.org

A woman in #Rajasthan,#India performs a dental hygiene procedure during her training with aid organization @barefootcollege. This innovative organization trains women with no formal education to become dental hygienists, a skill that they will use when they return to villages where tooth infections frequently result in death. Barefoot College embraces the idea that women who are undereducated can successfully learn trades in #technology,#engineering and #medicine. Trainees are often illiterate or semi-literate, but that doesn’t stop them from learning these skills successfully. They are also grandmothers who maintain strong roots in their villages and are influential in community development. These women will return to their homes and help improve the lives of themselves and others. #PhotographyForGood by @anniegriffithsphotography | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#WomenInSTEM#womeninscience#solarenergy#dental#science#barefootcollege#inspiration#rippleeffectimages www.rippleeffectimages.org -----

Students consult a trusty textbook at the Gashora Girls Academy in #Rwanda. This upper-secondary boarding school has become synonymous with leadership, scholarship and excellence. Each year, almost 300 Rwandan girls come here to develop their skills in a high-level curriculum of science, technology, engineering, politics, math, etc. The school creates a healthy and supportive learning environment so students can flourish. It instills confidence, love of learning and economic empowerment so girls can return to their communities and help Rwanda’s growth as a country. Girls will often go on to attend university and see themselves as future engineers, doctors and presidents. #PhotographyForGood by Renee Harbers | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good@rwanda_girls_initiative#womeninscience#womeninSTEM#thefutureisfemale#learning#scholarship#inspiration#educateagirl#girlseducation#rippleeffectimages www.rippleeffectimages.org

Happy International Day of #WomenInScience! This week, we celebrate women in developing countries using #STEM to help create a healthier, more prosperous future for their families, communities and countries. Here, a woman in #India holds a solar lantern she has built herself. She is a solar #engineer that has been trained by innovative aid organization @barefootcollege. Barefoot College has adopted the simple idea that undereducated women are capable of becoming highly skilled engineers. Trainees are often illiterate or semi-literate grandmothers who maintain strong roots in their villages and play a major role in community development. These dedicated women are trained to build, install, maintain, and repair solar systems in off-grid villages. They then host their own independent workshops for other villagers to learn. #PhotographyForGood by @amivitale | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#WomenInSTEM#solarenergy#solarlight#solarlantern#science#technology#barefootcollege#inspiration#thefutureisfemale#rippleeffectimages

Eunice, 49, is a mover and shaker on an Advocacy Committee that has been trained by aid organization @WaterAid In #Uganda. She guides community cleanups and advocates for more prepaid meters in underserved areas. She is also in the business of saving girls. Eunice runs the Bwaise III Girl Child Education Center.. Since 2000, young girls from 12-25+ have gathered here to learn how to sew, make jewelry and plait hair, all of which give them skills to make an independent living. Eunice has helped over 300 girls. Here, she teaches girls firsthand how to make beautiful beaded #jewelry. In this vulnerable area, access to water and the strength to carry it is not enough to thrive. The skills that girls learn from Eunice also create vital self-esteem. These girls can now envision and realize their dreams. #PhotographyForGood by @ljohnphoto | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#wateraid#empowerment#womenhelpingwomen#economicindependence#empowerwomen#teamwork#photojournalism#rippleeffectimages

Kyawt Kyawt, 36, reclines in the small building that used to be her family home in #Myanmar. Unfortunately, Kyawt Kyawt was not always this joyous. After her parents disapproved of her marriage, they pulled all financial support from the young couple, leaving them desperate. They lived under a tarp and stick structure in the corner of her mother-in-law’s yard for ten years with their children, saving funds and planning for the future. Now, the family has finally come out of the dark, built a new home and is thriving. Kyawt Kyawt joined @PACT’s supportive WORTH group, a female financial cooperative in her community. This was the key to her success. She could borrow money and diversify her business to sell brooms and eggs. Now the new family home has ample space, a TV and electric cooking pot. She is the village role model of success. #PhotographyForGood by @ljohnphoto | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#PACTmyanmar#southeastasia#hope#womenhelpingwomen#economicindependence#joy#smile#portrait#rippleeffectimages www.rippleeffectimages.org

A young woman skillfully works on her fine embroidery at the @pardadapardadi school in #India. In a country where families often keep their daughters home from school, Pardada Pardadi is an innovative safehaven of academics and skill-building for women and girls. All of the products they make are for sale to help support Pardada Pardadi and, more importantly, for the women to have an independent income. With that income there is freedom to build a new life or improve the lives of their children. This is the heart of this school. As an additional innovation, students also receive ten rupees per day in a savings account for attending. #PhotographyForGood by @ljohnphoto | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#pardadapardadi#everydayindia#education#educateagirl#empowerwomen#globalgoals#rippleeffectimages www.rippleeffectimages.org

When Grace became an @iamsolarsister entrepreneur and started selling solar lanterns to women in her village, she quickly started making a profit she didn’t expect. Her income became much higher than what she typically made as a #farmer in rural #Tanzania. She’s now been able to hire a tractor to help on the farm and has increased her yields. Solar Sister’s innovative model gives women the tools to sell life-changing #solarlanterns and #cleancookstoves to others. This improves the health of entire communities and helps women like Grace become economically independent. #PhotographyForGood by @joannapinneo | @rippleeffectimages@photography.for.good#iamsolarsister#globalgoals#smile#portrait#inspiration#photojournalism#everydayafrica#rippleeffectimages#SolarSister www.rippleeffectimages.org

Sofia Pilco, left, lends a hand to a woman in her community repairing her home. Sofia grew up in extreme poverty in the high Andes of #Peru. She was homeless for years until she learned about @heiferinternational’s Healthy Homes program. With supplies from #Heifer and help from her neighbors, Sofia was able to build a modest house with a clean, healthy cookstove and first bed of her life. Now, Sofia passes on her good fortune to others by leading other women. She says “There are other people suffering and they need to learn about the homes. These people are friends who need help. A student finds a quiet moment in her classroom in #Nicaragua. Today, she learned important lessons about safe water, #sanitation and #hygienefrom her preschool teacher. The teacher was aided by a trained health educator from aid organization El Porvenir (@elporvenir_nica) who works to ensure all #Nicaraguans have access to clean, safe water. To ensure the information sticks, the teachers are witty and playful when teaching this life or death lesson to #children. In rural communities around the world, the simple act of learning how to wash one’s hands can be lifesaving. Here, women in the mountains of #Vietnam patiently teach their #children how to wash their hands. Once these children get in the habit of simple #sanitation, they will be healthier and safer from germs and disease. The women in this village are superstars; On top of tirelessly caring for their children, they worked as a team and single-handedly carried hundreds of pounds of bricks uphill for over a kilometer to build community #latrines. The health of the community has improved dramatically. #PhotographyForGood by @anniegriffithsphotography | @rippleeffectimages#hygiene#toiletssavelives#health#latrine#motherhood#dedication#WASH#sanitationforall#globalgoals#empowerment@theglobalgoals

Two students dressed as microscopic germs let out their most ferocious “Roar!” at a primary school in #Uganda. They are part of an annual competition that that grows larger each year. Hundreds of children from different schools perform skits, speeches and creative dances that teach about the life changing importance of #sanitation. Students get quite competitive and the day culminates in an uproarious celebration by the winning school. At this primary school, aid organization @wateraid has provided these students with vital water and sanitation tools. This includes a latrine that can be used by adolescent girls during their cycle - a vital resource for girls to continue attending school. #PhotographyForGood by @ljohnphoto | @rippleeffectimages#education#everydayafrica#WASH#globalgoals#photojournalism#rippleeffectimages www.rippleeffectimages.org

In a village in rural #Myanmar,#children giggle as they are guided through the hand washing process by their mothers. In this remote community lives a tight knit group called Mother and Child Defenders. The group is supported by aid organization @pactworld and regularly meets to weigh their children and assess their health. What seems like raucous activity is actually strictly organized chaos by these dedicated moms: hands are washed, children are fed, babies are weighed and nutrition is evaluated. The face of Nin, age 10, lights up as she learns from her teacher at her primary school. In the Sampov Lun district in #Cambodia, her school has received vital tools from a local aid organization: a hand pump, latrines, school supplies and teaching support. The school currently has 195 students with only two teachers. It has become so overcrowded that the children must come in staggered between morning and afternoon classes.
