Gijsbert Gillisz. d'Hondecoeter father of the well-known artist Melchior d'Hondecoeter produced serveral works with poultry and waterfowl. By painting the bank sloping down towards the water he was able to spread the birds across the picture surface so that they stand beside each other without overlapping but are not arranged in rigid line at the same height. Can you name all the different types of bird in this painting by d’Hondecoeter? Waterfowl, Gijsbert Gillisz. d'Hondecoeter, 1652 #Rijksmuseum#Amsterdam#dailyart

Miffy in front of the Night Watch. Have you ever looked very closely at the works of Rembrandt? At first glance, they look nothing like the work of Dick Bruna, but if you take your time, you'll see more similarities than you might think. Join #Miffy as she takes a look at Rembrandt’s art and discovers similarities and differences. Mercis Publishing and the Rijksmuseum teamed up to create the book miffy x Rembrandt. Is it your dream to see your artwork exhibited in the Rijksmuseum? This is your chance! Only 16 more days to send in your work for the summer exhibition #LongLiveRembrandt. The most important condition is that you take Rembrandt as your inspiration. We asked some artists to share their submissions with us. Maybe these artworks can be a true inspiration for your own submission. Please bare in mind that for the final jury round you will be required to bring your artwork to the Rijksmuseum for the final selection. This family is making a lot of noise: the father sings at the top of his lungs while raising a glass, the mother and grandmother chime in and the children are either blowing into an instrument or smoking a pipe. All kinds of moralizing messages were often hidden in this kind of paintings. Such paintings served simultaneously to ‘educate and entertain’. Jan Steen urged his viewers to set a good example for their children. Want to learn more? Check our stories!⠀ The Merry Family, Jan Havicksz. Steen, 1668 #Rijksmuseum#Amsterdam#rijksdetails

Enjoy your Sunday! ✨🍑🐭🍇🍃 Herman Henstenburg earned his living baking pies. He painted his delightful watercolours of flowers, fruit and insects purely for pleasure. Henstenburg developed a special kind of watercolour paint that was so bright and powerful, a contemporary remarked that it rivalled oil paint. His superb still lifes were famous among collectors in his own day, and far beyond his hometown of Hoorn. Today, we would like to celebrate #internationalwomensday by announcing the exhibition ‘Louise Bourgeois in the Rijksmuseum Gardens’. Louise Bourgeois is considered one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. In the 1990s she became world-famous for her gigantic sculptures of spiders, but her career started as early as the 1940s. She was a painter and prolific print-maker but most of all a versatile sculptor, exploring in her work themes such as family relationships, connectedness and care. ‘Louise Bourgeois in the Rijksmuseum Gardens’ is the first exhibition in the Netherlands to focus on her outdoor sculptures. Stay tuned for more info about the exhibition in the upcoming weeks. Louise Bourgeois in the Rijksmuseum Gardens runs from May 24 through November 3, 2019.
