HAPPY WORLD WHALE ๐Ÿณ DAY. Both male and female humpback whales vocalize, but only males produce the long, loud, complex "song" for which the species is famous. Each song consists of several sounds in a low register, varying in amplitude and frequency and typically lasting from 10 to 20 minutes. Individuals may sing continuously for more than 24 hours. Cetaceans have no vocal cords, instead, they produce sound via a larynx like structure found in the throat, the mechanism of which has not as of yet been clearly identified. Whales do not have to exhale to produce sound. Whales within a large area sing a single song. All North Atlantic humpbacks sing the same song, while those of the North Pacific sing a different song. Each population's song changes slowly over a period of years without repeating. Scientists are unsure of the purpose of whale songs. Only males sing, suggesting one purpose is to attract females. However, many of the whales observed to approach a singer are other males, often resulting in conflict. Singing may, therefore, be a challenge to other males. Some scientists have hypothesized the song may serve an echolocative function. During the feeding season, humpbacks make unrelated vocalizations for herding fish into their bubble nets. Humpback whales make other sounds to communicate, such as grunts, groans, snorts and barks. Video Editing @respectanimalrights and even a little photo of Kim... Via @killer__whales_ ""Gabriela Cowperthwaiteโ€™s critically acclaimed documentary Blackfish centers on a captive orca named Tilikum. He was torn away from his family and ocean home when he was 2 years old, and out of frustration caused by nearly 20 years of intense confinement, isolation, and lack of emotional and intellectual stimulation, he has killed three humans. Hear what she has to say about her journey, her hope for captive orcas, and how you can help animals in the exclusive video interview below: In her documentary, Cowperthwaite pieces together Tilikumโ€™s story with shocking film footage, expert testimonies, and heartbreaking interviews with the people who know Tilikum better than anyone: his former trainers.: Astonishing Animals In the wild, orcas swim upward of 100 miles per day. But at SeaWorld and other marine parks around the world, orcas are forced to swim in tiny circles to amuse tourists and spend the majority of their lives virtually motionless in concrete tanks that are the human equivalent of a bathtub. Their important matriarchal bonds are broken when babies are taken from their mothers and sold or transferred to other parks, and captive orcas live only a fraction of their average life span. Credit ยฉ ๐Ÿ“น @taslishaw With caption Bigg's killer whales ... misunderstood and underappreciated. They usually keep their loud vocalizations to a minimum, probably to avoid being detected by their prey, but as prey populations (pacific harbour seals) have been on the increase in the Salish Sea, we have been seeing an increase in larger groups of much more vocal Bigg's whales. Who really knows why, but there is a potential that since these guys have ample prey available, they increasingly have the luxury to "let loose" and socialize more. All purely speculative, and to my knowledge no formal analysis has been done on this subject. The most humbling fact should be the glaringly obvious lack of understanding we really have about these whales (all whales really!). We are consistently learning more and refining that understanding. Personally I find contentment in the mystery. They will always hold secrets from us. #orca#salishsea#killerwhale#blackfish#wildlife#video#wildones#britishcolumbia#keepthemwild

Another with @sevenseasoffreedom Patagonian killer whales filmed off Argentina: Members of Magaโ€™s pod, including a teeny new calf, were seen swimming and heard vocalizing underwater on Saturday. These individuals belong to one of two tiny orca populations in the world that have self taught themselves to force strand on beaches to catch pinnipeds. It is a learned, yet highly dangerous, behavior that can result in death if not carefully calculated. The stranding orcas in Argentina number approximately 20โ€”a very unique subpopulation. ๐ŸŽฌ by ยฉ Alexis Fioramonti. Caption: @sevenseasoffreedom
