This is what it looks like from the bottom of a singing well. The Samburu and other nomadic tribes rely on them for water for themselves and their livestock during the dry months of the year. Every morning Samburu families walk their cattle to the dry river bed where they dig for water and fill their troughs for their livestock to drink from. As they do this they sing to their cattle, which recognize their individual family songs. Amidst the dust, colour, bells of the cows, camels and singing, the almost biblical scene is one that hasn’t changed for centuries. In the evening after the people and their cattle have finished, the elephants and other wildlife come to use the very same water source, a unique example of people and wildlife sharing a treasured resource. However, as the dry seasons get longer and harsher the wells get deeper which become hazardous, especially for small elephants which can sometimes fall down them. The Reteti team have become well practiced at returning separated babies who have fallen inside the wells back to their mothers and have so far done this with great success. Pokot showing newest member to the Reteti herd some love and attention. The calf named Sarara was found at the bottom of a well, the Reteti team spent all day and all night waiting at the very same well for his mother to come back and collect him but sadly she didn’t return. The little calf was starting to become weak and after 36 hours without milk he was loosing energy fast. The keepers made the decision to bring him in to the sanctuary which is less than 10 km from where he was found. Let’s hope when he is big and strong he might be able to reunite with his Mother and family. Until then Pokot and the other elephants will take him under their trunk! @conservationorg@glassybaby@kenyawildlifeservice@nrt_kenya@elephantcooperation@lifeisgoodco@yachakyerbamate@sandiegozoo@tusk_org@magicalkenya@tourismkenya#protectelephants#bekindtoelephants#DontLetThemDisappear#elephants#saveelephants#stoppoaching#kenya#northernkenya#magicalkenya#whyilovekenya#africa#everydayafrica

A love bite from the orphaned Grevy Zebra who adores Lekupania more than anyone else in the world! Despite being hand raised these two foals are now living in the wilderness in and around #Namunyak conservancy. We believe there may are a total of 9 in the area after a census was conducted by the @grevyszebratrust and we hope to see these numbers grow as community driven conservation acts to protect the habitat for these special animals. @conservationorg@glassybaby@kenyawildlifeservice@nrt_kenya@sararacamp@elephantcooperation@lifeisgoodco@yachakyerbamate@sandiegozoo@tusk_org@magicalkenya@tourismkenya#protectelephants#bekindtoelephants#DontLetThemDisappear#elephants#saveelephants#stoppoaching#kenya#northernkenya#magicalkenya#whyilovekenya#africa#everydayafrica

Lingwezi has found the perfect spot for some mid morning snacking ! The older calfs spend between 12 - 18 hours a day browsing and grazing on leaves, branches, bark, grass and seed pods which they self select. In return they play an invaluable role in seed dispersal, germination of trees and plants, and of course fantastic manure for enriching the rangeland Video by @katie.rowe@conservationorg@glassybaby@kenyawildlifeservice@nrt_kenya@elephantcooperation@lifeisgoodco@yachakyerbamate@sandiegozoo@tusk_org@elephantcooperation@magicalkenya@tourismkenya#protectelephants#bekindtoelephants#DontLetThemDisappear#elephants#saveelephants#stoppoaching#kenya#northernkenya#magicalkenya#whyilovekenya#africa#everydayafrica

It’s early morning and just as the sun starts to rise the elephants start to grumble and call to their keepers. The elephants are always more than ready to be let out of their stables. Just like toddlers they are excited about the events a brand new day holds! When out in the wild the calves enjoy chasing birds, monkeys and other small mammals in play... no wonder they can’t wait to start the day! We hope you all have a wonderful day today too ... Wishing you all a happy weekend from Nadasoit and the Reteti team! Nadasoit is fast becoming a vital member of the nursery herd. Her behavior is showing us that young females play a very critical role in the survival of younger calves. Comforting them, protecting them from dangerous obstacles and stresses and generally ensuring their safety. Nadasoit is already showing this maternal instinct to the younger calves in her orphan family. Walking out in to the North Kenya wilderness with Reteti Keeper Mike Learka to catch up with the three boys who are currently being weaned for re wilding next year. Sosian, Warges and Lingwezi are walking out much further than the nursery herd , they are not getting bottles as frequently and spending very little time with fewer keepers. Sometimes they bump in to wild elephants who are on their migratory route which goes straight past Reteti. Did you know that if given the option elephants will always drink the cleanest water available and have their mud bath in the dirtier muddier water. Elephants have the most phenomenal sense of smell and can actually smell water from nearly 20 km away.
