Madonna and Child with Saints by Nardo di Cione, Italian, ca. 1391, Honolulu Museum of Art.. . The best interview question of all time: If you had to teach art history with 5 works, what would you choose? My answer included the Arena Chapel by Giotto di Bondone - the father of the Italian Renaissance. Giotto introduced naturalism into the formulaic Byzantine style of the Duocento. This painting is by an artist of a later generation, but the weightiness of Mary and baby owes a debt to Giotto, as does the secure grip of Mary on her son. (And yes...I got the job 😊). . Tibetan Gates and a trunk for sacred texts call to mind the transformative path of Vajrayana Buddhism. The intricate lacquer designs, adorning humble wooden structures, are suited to the ‘Diamond Way,’ a tradition with ritualistic complexity and esoteric teachings. . Statuette of Herakles after Lysippos, ca. 1st century. Art history could be taught as the study of the human figure. The ancient Greeks’ approach introduced naturalism, realism, and ideas of perfection and virtue with the application of symmetria, mathematical ratios, to the human form. In the 4th-century BCE Lysippos was known for, among other things, changing the 5th-century BCE canon of Polykleitos to a more lithe formula, where bodies were less wide and the head was an eighth of the height. This small copy of the massive Farnese Herakles is a great example of Late Classical realism in the treatment of the body. There’s more to say here, as students in my Art 140 classes know. Bi disks of jadite and nephrite, carved and polished, placed in Chinese tombs, ca. 2000 BCE. Though the function of these prehistoric carvings is unknown, they likely signify beliefs in an afterlife. Ancient examples of humankind’s ingenuity and drive to fabricate beautiful and meaningful objects abound, leaving us with many unanswered questions. Among them: we aren’t we making art education a greater priority. . Day 5 of #thotachallenge#10dayartchallenge#10artworksin10days ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019. Asmat War Shields from Papua New Guinea, 19th-century. On Day 4 of #10dayartchallenge: Looking at art is not a passive experience. . As outsiders, we can appreciate these shields for their organic designs and repeating motifs that fill the space in a satisfying way. Or, if we learn a little more about the makers, we might recognize the flying fox motifs and phallic forms that Oceanic tribes used to stress virility. . And If we lived in the mangrove swamps or heavily forested upcountry lands and confronted an enemy brandishing a shield, we might drop dead in our tracks from the sheer power —mana—-of the object. ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019. Hula Kahiko by Lark Grey Diamond-Cates, bronze, 1997. On Day 3 of the #thotachallenge: Pay attention to public sculpture. . How do municipalities, corporations, religious organizations, and ruling groups use public art? What do they place in our view, and why? What does the art convey? What is celebrated? Or omitted? Questioning what we see deepens our understanding and appreciation of art and our collective drive to create. . Strong and graceful, dressed in traditional skirts and haku lei, depicted barefoot on the aina, the land, the hula dancers naturally fit in this setting. A great choice by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to celebrate the aloha spirit. 🌺 #10artworksin10days#10dayartchallenge#koa ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019. Wahine by Yvonne Chang, ca. 1975, Private Collection. Day 2 of the #10dayartchallenge. 🌺 Agency and the gaze make a powerful duo in Art Appreciation. To what extent does the subject have control and freedom of their representation? How does the artist navigate this relationship? . What makes Yvonne Cheng’s works so beautiful is the space she affords her subjects. There is no mistaking the power of these women. That is beauty. 🌺 ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019. Detail of the great wall that marks the boundary of the pu’uhonua, a refuge in ancient Hawaii. The wall stands about 12’ and runs approximately 1000 feet, with coast and ocean on the other side. . As mentioned in my earlier post, the Hawaiians constructed their traditional rock walls without mortar and with great skill, or mana--artistry. . Day 1 of #10dayartchallenge: Hikiau Heiau in Nāpō’opo’o, Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii. . Ancient Polynesians constructed raised platforms, called heiau, for temples and ritual activities using lava rock (basalt) and no mortar. Sites were chosen for their mana - power, energy, goodness - and builders themselves had personal and family mana that was imbued in the making. Here, the front corner of the heiau, dating to circa 1700, faces the bay. (The pyramidal monument is a later addition.) . Art Appreciation students often reflect that, before taking my classes, they had thought art was only painting and sculpture. Of course it’s so much more. It will be fun exploring this in the #thotachallenge#10artworksin10days. Thanks to @reinventingrid for throwing it my way. 🌺 ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019. Rachel Ruysch, Floral Still-life, Dutch, ca. 1698. Ruysch’s father was a botanist and her paintings reflect careful detail and realistic understanding of plant and insect life. Her talent is all the more impressive when one realizes that Ruysch’s arrangements include flowers which bloom at different times throughout the year. ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019. Epiphany marks the visit of the Magi to the newly born Christ Child. Three other visitors, humble shepherds, also visit. El Greco’s small painting on copper, The Adoration of the Shepherds, ca. 1576, an early work by the artist, demonstrates his energetic brushwork and use of white highlights, two qualities that remain with El Greco throughout his career. ____________ ©️Prof. Malia Molina 2019.
