Every year the Hawaiian Chieftain “tall ship” docks in our town for a few weeks for tours and private events. It is a chance to come on board and imagine what the world was like some 150 years ago. Can you even dream of sailing on a cargo ship over the ocean for two months? I can’t even imagine life without @instagram haha!
Tell me something good. With all of the craziness going on in the world today I want to hear some good news! What’s one good or great thing that happened to you this week or that you’re looking forward to in the next week? I’ll go first - our smoky skies are finally starting to clear up and sunsets like this will soon be on our horizon. Additionally some of the 50,000 people who were evacuated from the Paradise fire will finally be let back into town and begin rebuilding!
The skies over Sacramento have been smoky for the last 4 days as smoke from the #CampFire in Paradise 90 miles away travels through our area. It is causing a lot of respiratory issues here but it is nothing compared to the death and destruction experienced by the residents of the town of Paradise. Most of the town has been destroyed, with homes and businesses completely burned to the ground. One thing that is heartening is seeing my city come together to help those in need. I have seen countless business offer whatever resources they have to offer support to the victims of this fire. #sacramentoproud
Sorenson’s Resort is probably the best known spot in Hope Valley. We only spent a few hours here exploring and grabbing a bite from their cafe but it looks like a lovely getaway. It is draped in fall colors right now but I can’t wait to see what it looks like in the snow!
What is your favorite season of the year? I gotta tell you I am “falling” in love with fall! I just love seeing all of the different colors. And I don’t have to deal with monster allergies like I do when spring rolls around. I took my kids on a mini road trip to Hope Valley this past weekend. It is absolutely gorgeous there!
What do you think is around the bend for @instagram? Tomorrow this app celebrates its 8th anniversary. With the news that the original founders of Instagram have left and completely handed over the reins to Facebook, what do you see for the future of Instagram? Will we still be posting and fighting for followers (not to mention a feed in chronological order) in another 8 years? 🤔
This was my only Milky Way outing for this year. Can you see it barely peeking through the night sky? Even though we didn’t get to see the Milky Way in all it’s glory it was still a great experience to stand in between two fields within yards of an old nuclear generating station with @thadtphotography while a mama owl constantly sounded her alarm that we should stay away from her babies and other things(!) were slithering around in the brush.
Another shot from the @goodinc Mendocino Expedition. Here’s @vierra96tein standing underneath the Frederick Panhorst Bridge in Russian Gulch State Park. This bridge may look familiar as it closely resembles the Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur. BUT can you believe this bridge was constructed for $109,000(?!) in 1940??! What a deal! Check the Stories to see how massive this bridge is! .. @goodinc#goodinc People 2/3
Have you ever gone on a paid day trip expedition? Last week was my first time, on a trip to the Northern California coast with @goodinc. It was a great day spent chasing fog in different locations along the coast. And to top it all off I didn’t have to worry about scheduling, driving or snacks! .. Check my stories for a few other quick edits from this trip! .. People 1/3 @goodinc#goodinc
San Francisco in August means fog and temps in the 60’s. I’ve always thought the name “Karl the Fog” had been around for years and years. But looks like it’s only been around since 2010 when a San Franciscan created the @twitter account @karlthefog, choosing the name Karl as inspiration from the 2003 movie Big Fish. #andnowyouknow
One of my favorite views on Earth, Donner Lake. This lake and surrounding area is named for the Donner Party, the ill fated group of settlers that tried to reach California but faced many setbacks and had to resort to cannibalism to survive. As I get older I love learning more and more about history. If I could give a piece of advice to my 15 year old self it would be “Pay more attention in history class. History should not repeat itself. It should remain in the past.” What advice would you give your 15 year old self?
