Harmen Steenwijck - Still Life: An Allegory of the Vanities of Human Life โ € Dutch ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ โ € 1640โ € Oil on Panelโ € National Gallery, London โ € โ€”โ€”โ € This is probably Steenwijckโ€™s most notable work. A classic example of a โ€˜Vanitasโ€™ painting. These were warnings that one should not become consumed with wealth and earthly pleasures as you cannot take them with you in death. An obvious irony being that over time these became collectible and valuable works and in turn became โ€˜Vanitasโ€™ objects. Essentially a religious work, this painting is telling of the dangers of placing too much importance on wealth and pleasures and allowing them to obstruct the path to salvation. Each object in this still life is carefully selected to represent something. Such as wealth, knowledge, death. โ € โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ € #oldmastersdaily#arthistory#thehistoryofart#stilllife#dutchmasters#salvation#oilpainting#nationalgallery#london#skull#fruit#wealth#harmensteenwijck#vanitas#vanity

A quiet simple Frenchman who led a relatively uneventful middle class life, he had moderate success in his life and would be surprised to learn of his reputation in current times. His favourite subject, still life. Everything he paints recognisable for exactly what it is, itโ€™s so easy to accept his work at semi-photographic face value and miss the underlying element of abstract formal organisation entirely. Being able to look back at his work as a whole is to appreciate it for what it is and see the real contribution he made to his field. โ € โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” #oldmastersdaily#arthistory#thehistoryofart#stilllife#oilpainting#jeanbaptistesimรฉonchardin#frenchmasters#newyork#historylovers#apples#pears#mugs#knives#palette#chardin

In 1939 he decided to make a copy of the stolen panel. He used a 200 year old cupboard shelf and aged his work to match the rest by coating it in a layer of wax. So good was his work that the local authority in charge of religious property wanted to acquire the piece, Veken wanted 300 000 Belgian Francs, a large sum at the time. After much discussion they settled on 225. 75 000 from the authority and 150 000 from the state.โ € โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ € #oldmastersdaily#arthistory#historyofart#antiques#dealers#copy#forgery#church#belgium#jefvanderveken#justjudges#historylovers#belgium#altarpiece#oldmasterpaiting#replacement#stolen

It is generally believed that the local Mafia were responsible for the theft. Rumours have circulated over the years and some ex-Mafia turned informants have come forward with one saying it was destroyed in the theft. Another said it is hidden abroad. One man came forward to claim he had stolen the painting as a boy on the orders of a high ranking Mafia boss. The last person to come forward was in 2009 โ€˜Gaspare Spatuzzaโ€™ claiming that in 1999 he had been told that whilst being stored in a barn the painting had been ruined by rats and pigs with the remains being burnt. It is one of the worlds most famous unrecovered stolen paintings, if sold today the painting is estimated to be worth around $20M. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” #oldmastersdaily#arthistory#historyofart#stolen#masterpiece#caravaggio#stfrancis#stlawrence#baroque ##italianbaroque#italy#16thcentury#historylovers#stolenmasterpieces

Sandro Botticelli - Portrait of Dante Italian ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น c. 1495 Oil on Canvas Private Collection โ€”โ€” So just what Dante scorns as unworthy alike of heaven and hell, Botticelli accepts, that middle world in which men take no side in great conflicts, and decide no great causes, and make no great refusals. He thus sets for himself the limits within which art, undisturbed by any moral ambition, does its most sincere and surest work. His interest is neither in the untempered goodness of Angelicoโ€™s saints, nor the untempered evil of Orcagnaโ€™s Inferno; but with men and women, in their mixed and uncertain condition, always attractive, clothed sometimes by passion with a character of loveliness and energy, but saddened perpetually by the shadow upon them of the great things from which they shrink. His morality is all sympathy; and it is this sympathy, conveying into his work somewhat more than is usual of the true complexion of humanity, which makes him, visionary as he is, so forcible a realist. - Walter Pater, The Renaissance 1870. โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€” #oldmastersdaily#historylovers#historyofart#arthistory#private#collection#sandro#botticelli#portrait#oiloncanvas#dante#inferno#15thcenturyart#florence#italy
