True story- the pic on the left was a pic for my folio for a modelling agency I used to be on the books for. When it was taken, I thought I was fat at the time! Looking back- I wasn’t. That’s what we do to ourselves as women sometimes- we add weight, or if we have weight- we are keen to get smaller- as if we are not enough to walk this earth unless we conform. We are taught to conform- the latest- to lift heavy- and you won’t ‘get bulky’. Sure, you won’t, if you lose the fat covering the growing muscles. But if you do stay ‘bulky’ for a bit- you’ll probably have a wicked squat and deadlift and mad power. That is fucking enough! Unless you want to be lean. Then, you need to TRACK cals in v cals out. Leave nothing to chance. No class, or weight lifting, or fat loss protocol will beat cals In v cals out! Weigh and track and lift and do any class you want to do. It won’t, in isolation, make you fat, or thin. Just like one food item, like rice- won’t make you fat or thin- unless you overconsume. Lift, move, love, stay in your lane, don’t bag others- HELP others- if you feel you can! I’ve been through periods or being less lean as I grew my muscles- as I lifted and embraced my 🦁 - it’s a primal thing. Be holistic- be yourself- spread love. Sleep, lift- do any class you want- people who judge classes and say they are not structured or great- they are selling you something! Classes ain’t going to make you lean or strong in isolation- but you will meet people, be part of a group, get and give energy- find your courage- laugh, smile get your own PRs- and, if done intelligently- progress you and even get you out of a hole- it may be lack of self love, or lack of courage- nobody is better than anyone else! What is progress? For some people it may be the courage to go to the gym at all- be be vulnerable- to go it alone- to take a different path- to shoot for their own goals- to constantly question - to drop the mask. Progress from a year ago. It’s a process bigger in some places smaller in others. To get leaner around my waist and torso- I had to shed lots of emotional weight! To build quads, I had to be truly present in each session- finding and enjoying the connection between my brain and my muscles. Pumping them with energy! Visualising weight dropping off those areas as I get closer to my true core! Oh and sleep, tracking, diet, creativity- so many things that go into what you see on the outside- it starts inside. A leaner waist means my hormones are in check and my cals in cals out are good for me. When you see ‘before and afters’ on Instagram- they are often a highlight reel.
When you see ‘before and afters’ on Instagram- they are often a highlight reel. They are often to sell a product or an image- they are done with special poses and lighting and aggressive calorie deficits to elicit a ‘wow’ response to buy the product. What they don’t show- as I’m showing here- is the body over a seven year process! I started over ten years ago in the gym, yoga, walking etc. The first photo was when I had just had both of the kids and was trying to find what worked for me. Second photo top- I was all about being ‘thin’ - hadn’t discovered super heavy weights and food yet 🤣 I was afraid of fuelling. Then I became a distance athlete and weights helped to keep me free from injury. Then I discovered heavy lifting and eating in a surplus to build muscle! To see what I could do! The final three are all from this week or last week. I’m still lifting the weights- heavy and frequently- but I have learned how to track calories and macros and energy input and output. I want my body to be a reflection of all that is inside of me. So, remember- a real transformation isn’t going to be linear! There are bumps and twists and turns- it’s like life. Just always have focus and clarity about your path and being TRUE to yourself. Don’t do it for the gram. Do it for you, for your kids, family, for yore own happiness. 🤩🤩❤️💪🏼 it’s not linear. Explore what you love- don’t be afraid to see what your body can do and where it can go. Love what you have. Love it hard 🦋🦋🦋😍❤️ things take time. They realise that I’m not gone- I’m only down Warrigal Rd! ❤️The 5.45am class is early enough to have a shower and go to work- we have showers- or, in some cases, get back to the kids- though for mums who might have a day off- we have the 9/9.15/9.30 classes and the 10.30 Monday class- perfect for school drop-off. Otherwise- pop in on a Sunday at 8am and see me- you’ll be home before anyone wakes up! I carry much more lean muscle now but am actually smaller in some places and bigger in others! Eg- smaller waist- less cortisol- bigger in the quads and calves and shoulders. If you’re going to make changes this year- incorporate weight training. Keep doing your cardio - and stay accountable- cals in v cals our, stress, sleep - training!
