”Together, President Obama and I led a quick ‘team time’ with our Scholars huddled in a circle to discuss the programming we host at #NatsAcademy. Then he grabbed a bat to join our HUSTLE baseball v. softball scrimmage. Before pitching to the President, I took a deep breath. It was my civic duty to give him a pitch to hit! I put one down the heart of the plate and he crushed it to right center field for a double to start a rally for the girls softball team.” – Charlie Sperduto, #NatsAcademy Senior Manager, Baseball/Softball Operations
"I offered some signals when President Obama stepped into the batter's box. He asked what it meant and I said, 'That means hit it over the fence.’ Sure enough, he hit a stand-up double to the fence! We both laughed and high-fived as I thanked him for taking an at-bat.” – Gaby Elvina, #NatsAcademy Lead Softball Coordinator
The sun shone brilliantly in Ft. Dupont that day / #NatsAcademy students took the field to play / Then from the throat of one young man a squeal swelled / “It's @barackobama!” he ran in circles and he yelled / The students took notice, the coaches let out a gasp / Smiles gleamed for all with Obama at the bat
Yesterday, our Scholar Athletes celebrating the end of the school year received a surprise visit from President @BarackObama. The President enjoyed a first-hand look at the after-school programming of the #NatsAcademy, including a scrimmage between our HUSTLE baseball and softball programs, field activities for younger students, and the weekly farmer’s market offering healthy, affordable produce to neighborhood families. The Academy uses baseball, softball, and after-school enrichment to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among underserved youth in D.C.
