The 1911 popular edition (with advertisements) of “Man and Superman” (1903) by Bernard Shaw, including the rarely performed third act. The play represents Shaw’s take on the classic “Don Juan” myth which is used to expound his ideas on evolution (tinged by Nietzsche) with a reversal of gender roles. As stated by Shaw himself regarding the character Ann Whitefield: "Don Juan had changed his sex and become Dona Juana, breaking out of the Doll's House and asserting herself as an individual”(therein a nod to Shaw’s inspiration Henrik Ibsen). #bernardshaw#literature#playwright#1900s#1910s#antique#old#vintage#book#bookstagram#antiquebooks#oldbooks#charityshopfinds#manandsuperman#dublin#dublinireland#henrikibsen

A neat charity shop find of yesterday: “A Book of Dublin” published by the Corporation of Dublin, 1929. Although the cover is quite battered, it has managed to keep safe these beautiful illustrations of the city by prominent Irish artists of the time! The guide provides a glimpse into the Dublin of 90 years ago, and proves some things haven’t changed; Grafton Street is still chaos and the risk of getting hit by a streetcar has evolved into the risk of getting hit by a Luas! #dublin#ireland#classic#antique#vintage#old#book#dublinireland#dublinhistory#dublincity#oldbooks#guide#1920s#luas#graftonstreet#oconnellstreet#antiqueguide#bookstagram#vintagebooks#exploredublin#charityshopfind#thriftstorefinds

Made it out to Springfield, Illinois again with @naturally_wandering ❤️ Yesterday I stopped in at one of my favorite bookshops called the Prairie Archives and found this neat volume in the $2 sale section (very appropriate given all of our traveling): “Ocean to Ocean on Horseback” (1895) by Captain Willard W. Glazier. The book documents the author’s 1876 journey across the North American continent by horse from Boston to San Francisco. Glazier, who had served in a cavalry regiment during the Civil War, describes his travels including the customs and history of the cities he visited as well as his capture by (and eventual escape from) hostile Native Americans before reaching his journey’s end. #classic#antique#old#vintage#antiquebooks#antiquebook#prairiearchives#springfieldillinois#book#bookstagram#antiquebookshop#travel#1890s#1870s#nineteenthcentury#oldbooks#rare#rarebooks#cover#illustrations

Happy New Year! 🎉🥂 One of my favorite finds: December 31, 1925 New Years edition of “Life” magazine featuring the wonderful cover illustration “The Cut-in Dance,” depicting a modern flapper 1926 stealing time away from a more traditionally-clad 1925. The magazine also features humorous resolutions, great caricature illustrations of 1925 in review, and some neat ads. #life#lifemagazine#newyearseve#newyears#classic#magazine#flapper#roaring20s#1920s#1925#jazzage#ads#vintage#antique#old#vintagemagazine#coverart#illustration#caricature#happynewyear#twentiethcentury
