"Churches" *** There are many places of prayer in the city of Sofia, Bulgaria. The "Square of Tolerance" is an area in the centre of the city which has 4 churches dedicated to the major religions: Catholicism, Orthodox, Judaism and Islam. You can clearly see all 4 from the centre point and everyone seems to live in relative harmony here, preferring to be citizens of Sofia than religion. The world's 5th major religion, Fast Food, is also represented here, by the country's first MacDonald's. Taking the walking tour is the best way to see the city and discover it's history. My guide was great, telling funny yet interesting and historically correct stories, keeping the crowd of tourists thoroughly entertained for 3 hours. Bulgaria's capital Sofia has has a long and tumultuous history. The Romans conquered Serdica (the old name for the city) in 29BC, previously owned by the Thracians. It was raided by the Huns, conquered by the Visigoths in the 4th and 5th centuries, anden conquered by the Slavs in 617AD. It became part of Bulgaria in 809 but became part of the Byzantine Empire until the Ottomans took and held the city for nearly 500 years. In 1878 Sofia was back in Bulgarian hands but bombed by the Allies in WWII and then it was part of the Communist Block until independence in 1989. August 2018. "Old and New" *** Sofia has so many ruins mixed in with Communist-Era buildings as well as modern, glass office buildings. The oldest church and building in the city is the Church of Saint George, built by the Romans in the 4th century. It is now surrounded by the parliament building, square and serious compared to the church's round brick exterior. Taking the walking tour is the best way to see the city and discover it's history. "Peles Castle - the interior." *** This beautiful yet modern castle was built by Carol I, king of Romania. It took many years to build (1875-1914) and was finished just before the outbreak of WWI. An incredible feat of manpower, workers from over 14 nations joined the construction team, the total project costing 16,000,000 lei in gold, or around US$120 million. The castle itself is more than 3,200 square metres and has 170 rooms - including 30 bathrooms! Everywhere hallway, room and wall space is decorated with rugs, fine china, ivory, statues, stained glass and arms and armour. This is the reason people come to Sinaia and I can see why! Sinaia is a lovely mountain town, full of hikers in summer and skiers in winter. It was home to the wealthy of Romania and even the King himself had a residence here, Peles Castle. Tourism in Romania is slowly becoming more and more of an industry and may bring the country the prosperity it deserves - it has beautiful landscapes, mountains and forests, as well as cities such as Bucharest, Sinaia and Brasov. The food is very good and the people are also very friendly. "Churches." *** Romania is full of churches, beautiful orthodox places of worship that many people still visit to pay their respects. Small of large, they are wonderfully decorated on the inside with gold icons and painted walls and ceilings. The most famous of all the churches here is the Black Church in Brasov (pic#2, 3 and 4). Built in 1542, it is the most important Lutheran place of worship in the country. Also a busy tourist destination, it holds the richest collection of Anatolian carpets and tapestries in Europe. It's worth a visit. Brasov, a city in the Transylvania region of Romania, is a real gem of a place in a treasure chest of a country. Medieval walls, fortresses, The Black Church and so many things to see, including its own 'Hollywood' sign.
