Fantastic Beasts: Like something from a storybook, the pygmy hippopotamus is a small nocturnal hippopotamid -- a semiaquatic forest creature. They spend most of their day hidden in rivers, often in dens burrowed into the river banks. It is unknown whether they create these dens or just find them. In fact, there is much that is unknown about these fantastical creatures -- their entire existence was unknown outside West Africa until the 19th century. Today fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild -- and are threatened by loss of habitat through logging and agriculture. They need a Newt Scamander. * #oliphaunt#fantasticbeasts#pygmyhippo#hippo#hippopotame#semiaquatic#newtscamander#jakarta#nocturnal#criticallyendangered#fantasticbeastsandwheretofindthem#endangeredspecies#middleearthmarch#tolkientribe#impossible#mythicalcreatures#strangerthanfiction#whiskers#stewardship#african#itsawonderfulworld#westafrica#littleears#wondersofcreation#natureisamazing#magizoologist#newtonartemisfidoscamander

Welcome, welcome, little stranger, Fear no harm, and fear no danger; We are glad to see you here, For you sing ‘Sweet Spring is near.’ --- Louisa May Alcott * * The male American robin - like many thrushes - has a complex and almost continuous song: a string of 10 or so clear whistles assembled from a few often-repeated syllables - which vary according to the time of day. Robins in different regions have different songs. Most sing from early Spring to late July or early August; only a few sing into September. They are among the first birds singing in the dawn, and last at dusk. In some First Nations legends, robin red-breast is either the guardian or thief of fire. . #turdusmigratorius#robin#harbingerofspring#migrantswelcome#louisamayalcott#robinredbreast#spring#thrush#birdsong#songbird#apichi#opeechee#ottawavalley#ontarionature#cpawsov#listen#lookandsee#whiskers#windstonebeckwith#easternontariobirds#environmentontario#natureofthings#ministryofnaturalresourcesandenvironment#knowyourplace#arochalife#namethings

Behind the waterfall...
Ithilien: Faramir & the Rangers.

Faramir, Lover of Lore
Behind the waterfall... Ithilien: Faramir & the Rangers. Faramir, Lover of Lore. —— Tolkien goes to some length to make clear that Boromir, brave and good as his initial intent might be, severely handicaps the Fellowship because he “care[d] little for lore, save the tales of old battles.” Faramir was “otherwise in mind… a lover of lore and music, and therefore by many in those days his courage was judged less than his brother’s. But it was not so….. He welcomed Gandalf at such time as he came to the City, and he learned what he could from his wisdom.” Readers are told this a number of times – even by Faramir himself, who loved his brother dearly, but knew that B's exclusive obsession with “battle and glory” might lead to downfall. ........... Jackson's movie fails Tolkien, Faramir, and the audience here: it is crucial to understand why the one *human* who is given the opportunity to take the ring is not even tempted. Jackson’s Faramir nearly takes the Ring from Frodo. But it is actually central to Tolkien's whole construct that Faramir does NOT do so -- Tolkien's Faramir doesn't even want to *see* the ring. Because he knows the stories of old he is, as he says, “wise enough to know that there are some perils from which a man should flee.” Faramir explains to Frodo that "Ancient tales" teach "the peril of rash words concerning such things as [the Ring],” and that “such things do not breed peace – not if aught may be learnt from ancient tales." Faramir the Storied; Faramir the Wise. * * #ithilien#behindthewaterfall#piopiotahi#knowyourstory#lore#milfordsound#abookisadoorout#fantasyworld#lotr#itsawonderfulworld#rangers#tolkien#faramir#middleearthmarch2019#tolkienite#tolkientribe#newzealand#middleearthmarch#bookishfeatures#middleearth#waterfall#gandalf#read#storied#wisdom#truewarrior

Forgotten Histories: Tolkien the Orator. - Written intro by WH Auden; art by Pauline Baynes; music by Donald Swann & JRR Tolkien; recitations by Tolkien. Swann wrote most of the music, with a Gregorianesque contribution by Tolkien. The appropriately named Wm Elvin sang, with Swann on piano. Tolkien recited 5 of his Bombadil poems, and one Elvish prayer. Entitled ‘Poems and Songs of Middle Earth’ it was released by Caedmon Records in 1967. I have tried to include Auden’s note, but could only fit it sideways. :) . . #forgottenhistory#middleearthmusic#britishpoet#nordheimer#auden#middleearthmarch2019#hobbit#donaldswann#whauden#lprecords#poetry#fantasyillustration#tolkientribe#jrrtolkien#middleearthmarch#tolkiencollection#recordcollection#bookish#paulinebaynes#tolkienite#tolkien#storysongs#englishfolk#fantasyart#legendarium#theroadgoeseveron#welshsinger#poetics#thelordoftherings#paulinebaynes

Forgotten Histories: Tolkien the Musician. - ‘The Road Goes Ever On’ was a song cycle of Tolkien’s poetry published both as a book of sheet music, as well as an audio recording. The music was written by Donald Swann, with Tolkien’s approval. Most of the music resembles traditional English folk music, however the Quenya song "Namárië" was based on a tune by Tolkien. The LP was recorded on 12 June 1967, with Swann on piano and William Elvin singing. Side one has Tolkien himself reading five poems from ‘The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.’ The first track on side two is Tolkien reading the Elvish prayer ‘A Elbereth Gilthoniel.’ The remainder of side two is the song cycle. Entitled ‘Poems and Songs of Middle Earth’ it was released by Caedmon Records. . . #forgottenhistory#middleearthmusic#poetryandsong#britishpoetry#piano#middleearthmarch2019#hobbit#lotr#donaldswann#lp#lprecords#poetry#fantasymusic#tolkientribe#jrrtolkien#middleearthmarch#tolkiencollection#recordcollection#bookishfeatures#paulinebaynes#tolkienite#tolkien#storysongs#englishfolk#windstonebeckwith#legendarium#theroadgoeseveron#thelordoftherings

Forgotten Histories: Tolkien the scholar. Perhaps Tolkien’s most instrumental work as a philologist was his radical essay on Beowulf called “The Monsters and the Critics” in which he challenged his colleagues for being so wrapped up in historical criticism - in deconstructing the text - that they were completely missing the actual story of Beowulf. But Tolkien also produced such work as a well-respected edition of ‘Sir Gawain & the Green Knight,’ and a book on Middle English Vocabulary. He translated the Book of Jonah for the Jerusalem Bible. He worked on retellings of the Norse saga of Sigurd & the Nibelungs, and of Medieval tales such as ‘Sir Orfeo,’ and ‘The Perl.’ He also assisted many friends and students so thoroughly in their work that he often didn’t get ‘round to completing his own. Working on the material with them, facilitating their exploration and reconstruction of the text was more important to Tolkien than climbing the ladder of academic or collegial prestige. . . #forgottenhistories#mentorship#jrrt#priorities#middleearthmarch2019#truescholar#academia#tolkientribe#tolkienist#tolkienite#anglosaxon#sirgawain#greenknight#jrrtolkien ##sirgawainandthegreenknight#lotr#gryffin#prestige#jonah#middleearthmarch#philology#philologist#medieval#arthurianlegend#knights#middleages#bookishfeatures#bookstagram#tolkiencollection#bookcollection

* 'The rock, so long speechless, is the library of his poetry' -- T.S. Eliot * * "Still some miles away, on the far side of the Westfold Vale, lay a green coomb, a great bay in the mountains, out of which a gorge opened in the hills. Men of that land called it Helm's Deep, after a hero of old wars who had made his refuge there. Ever steeper and narrower it wound inward from the north under the shadow of the Thrihyrne, till the crow-haunted cliffs rose like mighty towers on either side, shutting out the light." We live our lives of human passions, cruelties, dreams, concepts, crimes and the exercise of virtue in and beside a world devoid of our preoccupations, free from apprehension-- certainly, by our actions. A world parallel to our own We call it "Nature"; admitting ourselves to be "Nature" too. Whenever we lose track of our own obsessions, our self-concerns, because we drift for a minute, an hour even, of pure (almost pure) response to that insouciant life: cloud, bird, fox, the flow of light, the dancing pilgrimage of water, vast stillness of spellbound ephemerae on a lit windowpane, animal voices, mineral hum, wind conversing with rain, ocean with rock, stuttering of fire to coal--then something tethered in us, hobbled like a donkey on of gnawed grass and thistles, breaks free. No one discovers just where we've been, when we're caught up again into our own sphere (where we must return, indeed, to evolve our destinies) --but we have changed, a little. “Several Ents had already arrived. More were coming in down the other paths, and some were now following Treebeard. As they drew near the hobbits gazed at them. They had expected to see a number of creatures as much like Treebeard as one hobbit is like another; and they were very much surprised to see nothing of the kind. The Ents were as different from one another as trees from trees: some as different as one tree is from another of the same name but quite different growth and history; and some as different as one tree-kind from another, as birch from beech; oak from fir. There were a few older Ents, bearded and gnarled like hale but ancient trees (though none looked as ancient as Treebeard); and there were tall strong Ents, clean-limbed and smooth-skinned like forest-trees in their prime..." * 'Most of the trees are just trees, of course; but many are half awake. Some are quite wide awake, and a few are, well, ah, well getting Entish. That is going on all the time. ...Leaflock has grown sleepy, almost tree-ish, you might say: he has taken to standing by himself half-asleep all through the summer with the deep grass of the meadows round his knees. Covered with leafy hair he is. He used to rouse up in winter; but of late he has been too drowsy to walk far even then. Skinbark lived on the mountain-slopes west of Isengard. That is where the worst trouble has been. He was wounded by the Orcs, and many of his folk and his tree-herds have been murdered and destroyed. He has gone up into the high places, among the birches that he loves best, and he will not come down. Still, I daresay I could get together a fair company of our younger folks-if I could make them understand the need: if I could rouse them: we are not a hasty folk. What a pity there are so few of us!' “ . . #fangorn#dontbehasty#jrrtolkien#lotr#middleearthmarch2019#jrrt#treebeard#hobbit#bookishfeatures#deforestation#ent#ents#moot#tolkientribe#naturesrevenge#tolkien#tolkienite#awakening#awake#windstonebeckwith#ministryofnaturalresourcesandenvironment#ottawavalley#book#trees#lordoftherings#middleearthmarch
