You know it is hot and humid when you can see 👁 evaporation occurring. Most plants (like this Hedychium) have a cuticle, which is a thin layer of wax that covers the leaf surface. This protects the plant from water 💧 loss, especially on days like this! . . . #botany#scicomm#lyonarboretum#manoa#honolulu#oahu#hawaii#gohawaii#venturehawaii#marveloushawaii#lethawaiihappen#neverstopexploring#learn#explore#botanicalgardens#plantblindness#plants#plantsofinstagram

Waimea Canyon 1/3. In the far left portion of this photo, beyond the beautiful Acacia koa, is an area known as Halemanu. There are many manu, birds, to be found here and some probably have hale, “houses,” that are in the area. Some time during 1868-1871 an intrepid Czech-Austrian surgeon/botanist Heinrich Wawra Ritter von Fernsee visited this area. He came across a unique tree which he then collected and described as Polyscias waimeae, ‘Ohe kiko’ola. This species has the largest flowers out of all the species found in Hawai’i, and probably around the world. Each flower has about 45-66 stamen! Seriously google it up... . . #waimeacanyon#waimea#kauai#kauaiaswhy#hawaii#gohawaii#venturehawaii#venturetheislands#marveloushawaii#lethawaiihappen#plantblindness#biodiversity#botany#scicomm#history#neverstopexploring#moodygrams#optoutside

Waimea Canyon 2/3. According to Pukui, Elbert, and Mookini, 1974 the place name refers to the reddish color of the water that flows out of this canyon. This is of course due to the erosion of the oxidized volcanic rock found here. Surprisingly the canyon was not only formed by erosion, but also by the collapse of part of the island. About 4 MYA part of the island collapsed which formed a depression/fault here. Over time, run off from the rains that almost constantly envelope Mt. Wai’ale’ale eroded the western Napali Member and exposed the thicker eastern Olokele Member. This allowed for the basalt on the eastern side to become oxidized and turn from black to red... . . #waimeacanyon#waimea#kauai#kauaiaswhy#hawaii#gohawaii#marveloushawaii#lethawaiihappen#geology#erosion#learn#explore#scicomm#hawaiilife#moodygrams#optoutside#dirtbagdreams#neverstopexploring

Sometimes Botanists come up with weird names for plant parts. Members of the Acanthaceae, like this Alphelandra sinclairiana, have special structures called jaculators. These forcibly eject the seeds out of the capsule in what some might explosive dehiscence. We will have to wait for this to finish flowering to check out these structures. For now just appreciate the colors. You can also think about how this species is named after Andrew Sinclair (1794-1861), a surgeon in the British Navy. When he was not sawing legs off, or monitoring the crew for signs of scurvy he was out botanizing. Later in life he worked on the convict ships bound for Australia so he could collect down under. Really puts field work in perspective for you! Now blooming at the Harold L. Amherstia nobilis, Pride of Burma 🇲🇲, never disappoints. This tree species is the only member of the genus Amherstia which commentates Countess Sarah Amherst (1762-1838) a British Naturalist and Botanist that lived in India. This amazing tree shares its’ eponym with an amazing pheasant. For real Google: Lady Amherst’s Pheasant! Back to the tree. It is endemic to the dry, evergreen forests of Burma, but is found widely in cultivation. Which is a good thing because it is unknown how many trees still exist in its home range. . . . #lyonarboretum#lyon100#manoa#honolulu#oahu#hawaii#venturetheislands#venturehawaii#gohawaii#marveloushawaii#neverstopexploring#explore#learn#botany#botanicalgardens#scicomm#hilife#hawaiistagram#plantsofinstagram#plants#pocket_flowers#wildplants#biodiversity#plantblindness

Hong Kong Park is a gem of a botanic garden located in the concrete jungle of Central/Admiralty. Admission is free and it contains two museums: The K.S. Lo Gallery and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware. Both I would highly recommend! Flagstaff House explains how different dynasties brewed tea and K.S Lo had a great exhibit on seals/chops. As far as the garden goes the hardscapes and garden ornaments were pretty surreal. Some accenting the plants and others mimicking them. Overall the plant collection was interesting (some things I have seen before and others that I have not) and well curated (e.g. signage/interpretation, plant health, weed free). For this post I wanted to focus on the abiotic aspects of a garden because they often overlooked by us plant nerds 🤪. . . . #hongkongpark#travelhongkong#hk#hkig#hongkonger#hongkonginsta#neverstopexploring#hongkongnature#botanicalgardens#gardenornement#travelhk#explore#learn#nikon#nikond3300#visualsoflife#optoutside#concretejungle#travel#travelgram#asia_vacations#admiralty#central#discoverhongkong

In 2019 some of my posts will focus on what is currently blooming @uhlyonarboretum. This will help me and other staff in the Grounds and Collections Department get a hold on the phenology, the study of periodic plant and animal life cycles, of our collection. In this case we are interested in looking at when our trees flower. If monitored over a period of years and compared to climate data collected at an onsite weather station we can determine the effects of climate change on flowering time. But I digress...One of the amazing trees that is going off right now is Saraca declinata. This species is in the Fabaceae family and native to Tropical Asia (Borneo, Cambodia 🇰🇭, Laos 🇱🇦, Sumatra, Thailand 🇹🇭, Vietnam 🇻🇳, Java, Lingga and Anambas Islands). The seeds are edible and the wood can be used for utensils. Come check this awesome plant out today 😎🤙🏼. . . . #lyonarboretum#lyon100#manoa#honolulu#oahu#hawaii#gohawaii#808life#hilife#explore#visualsofearth#venturetheislands#nikon#nikond3300#nikonnature#plantsofinstagram#botany#scicomm#ig_plants#wildplants#phenology#marveloushawaii#biodiversity#plantblindness

A Mantis and Bixa orellana fruit to get everyone in the spirit of the season! This month has been insane for me. Between a trip to Japan and Hong Kong SAR, moving the following week, and then Christmas/our wedding/New Years it has been both thrilling and exhausting! I am looking forwards to 2019, and 2018 till infinity with @mioshimauma. Now for some trivia. ▪️ Most people know Bixa as the Lipstick Plant. What part of the fruit has the characteristic red-orange substance that can be used for body paint/lipstick? 🧐 ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ #lyonarboretum#lyon100#manoa#honolulu#oahu#hawaii#gohawaii#ig_oahu#botany#808living#hilife#venturetheislands#scicomm#christmas#christmas2018#christmasinhawaii#melekalikimaka#newbeginnings#pocket_flowers#wildplants#plantsofinstagram

I am a firm believer in the fact that the grandeur of a place can change you. I was ecstatic to learn that it was prime time for autumn foliage viewing in Japan 🇯🇵. Going around Kyoto, and to a lesser extent Osaka, I was overwhelmed by the color palate. Kiyomizu-dera was the climax of this Fall odyssey. However, the cold and filler flash zapped my battery before I was able to get some good night shots. It was then that I remembered what Oji-san told me at Ryoan-ji, “You cannot capture with the camera what the eye sees.” Taking in the night views I dwelled upon the saying of that temple, “One already has all one needs.” . . #kiyomizudera#kyoto#night#nightphotography#temple#autumn#autumnleaves#igjapan#traveljapan#京都#葉っぱ#雄大#清水寺#japan_focus#japan#gojapan#mytinyatlas#visualsofearth

When I am walking around @uhlyonarboretum I usually find myself looking up, or at eye level (I am a little under 1.8 m). Most of the showy stuff is up in the canopy or at the top of a decently tall stem. This Brownea macrophylla really switched up with a massive inflorescence born on the stem near the base of the tree. This beautiful tree is native to 🇵🇪 🇪🇨 🇻🇪 🇵🇦 🇨🇴. Cauliflory, or the condition of bearing flowers on stems or main trunk of a tree is common in many plant families. Generally, this is seen in tropical plants where there might be a tall, dense canopy. There are plenty of pollinators that do not live in the canopy and may be exclusively found on tree trunks. What is an example of this flowering condition in the flora of Hawai’i?? . . . #botany#scicomm#science#manoa#honolulu#oahu#hawaii#gohawaii#marveloushawaii#808life#hilife#nikon#nikond3300#nikonnature#visualsoflife#flowerstagram#pocket_flowers#wildplants#nikonartists#biodiversity#plantblindness

Globba is a unique looking genus in the family Zingiberaceae. It contains about 100 species that are native to the Indo-Chinese monsoon region. The common name for this group is Dancing Ladies/Girls Ginger. Many species in cultivation have showy bracts (not like the small, yellow-green ones here) which contrast the delicate, yellow flowers. There are four sections within this genus that are divided based on the presence, and number of anther appendages (top of the flower). Section Globba has four appendages, like this G. patens. Fun facts: 1.) This species is used in its native range (🇹🇭, 🇲🇾, 🇮🇩) to treat postpartum. 2.) The yellow petals are not petals at all; they are staminodes (sterile stamen). . . . #botany#scicomm#science#manoa#honolulu#oahu#hawaii#gohawaii#venturetheislands#marveloushawaii#visualsoflife#pocket_flowers#flowerstagram#nikon#nikond3300#nikonnature#nikonartists#808life#hilife#ginger#flowers#lyon100#biodiversity#plantblindness

As of late the weather up at the Arboretum has been prime for rainbows. This also provides top-notch conditions for weeds to pop up 😱. This Coix lacryma-jobi recently surfaced along the trail side. I got to admit that I am pretty stoked because this is one cool grass 😎. The hardened spatheoles (green shiny round structures above the stamen) turn white or blue and are used as beads. They are also utilized in traditional Chinese medicine. It is not common for any Poaceae to have medicinal properties. Like other greases the caryopsis (seed) can be eaten. While this plant is pretty richter, at the end of day it had to be removed. . . . #botany#scicomm#lyon100#manoa#honolulu#uhmanoa#oahu#hawaii#marveloushawaii#gohawaii#nikon#nikond3300#nikonnature#nikonartists#visualsofearth#ig_hawaii#flowerstagram#pocket_flowers#808life#hilife#venturetheislands#biodiversity#plantblindness

👄 Looking good 💋 Billbergia pyramidalis ‘Kyoto’. The cultivars variety seems to differ from the species in that it is variegated. This species is native to an area that extends from the windward Caribbean islands to North and East Brazil. You might confuse this genus with another common bromeliad Aechmea. The difference is the sepals, the part that looks frosted white, does not end in a spine. Please remember when you visit the Arboretum to not pick flowers or disturb any accessions.
