Slogan McLojong (@lojong_slogans) — Training the Mind—with help from emojis. Personal musings/pinsta : @musculoskeletaleditor.
Slogan 20—Of the two witnesses, hold the principal one. 🌱🌱🌱 I’m the voice on the inside who knows whether my motives are gold or dross, whether my actions are laudable or laughable. 🌱🌱🌱 Making the shift to focusing on my internal state over my environment, effect, etc, with the goal not of pleasure but of service, has done interesting things to my brain. 🌱🌱🌱 Sometimes I worry about that a bit, but it fades. My principal witness knows best. ♥️
Slogan 18—The Mahayana instruction for the ejection of consciousness at death is the five strengths: how you conduct yourself is important. 🌱🌱🌱 Sigh. Dislike when my hankies get all mis-ordered and I don’t notice. Thus re-post. So I am determined to order my hankies properly, maintain this habit so that it becomes ingrained and unceasing. I will point out my mistakes and continue to work toward a better understanding of Lojong. Until I am compost.🌱🌱🌱 *insert compost mentis joke here*🌱🌱🌱
Slogan 17—Practice the five strengths, the condensed heart instructions. 🌱🌱🌱 Every day I may be determined in a slightly different way, something new to engage 🌱 Every day I sink into mindfulness. It’s familiar getting there. 🌱 Every day there’s a tweak or a reminder of what my best can be. 🌱 Every day I call myself on my bullshit. 🌱 Every day I try to be loving, helpful and useful. 🌱🌱🌱
Slogan 16—Whatever you meet unexpectedly, join with meditation. 🌱🌱🌱 Things show up—slow growths, stunts, and shocks—and I’m either a well or a wall for it. 🌱🌱🌱 A meditative state of mind changes the impact of the unexpected, changes the nature of unexpectedness, just plain changes. 🌱🌱🌱 Happy Friday. Be loved. ♥️
Slogan 15—Four practices are the best of methods. 🌱🌱🌱 These are simple things: stop the stuff I know is bad, add the stuff I know is meritorious. Be grateful to the people who help, and glad for challenge and growth-portunities. 🌱🌱🌱 A lot of it looks green, at the time. ♥️
Slogan 14—Seeing confusion as the four kayas is unsurpassable shunyata protection. 🌱🌱🌱 Circumstance may look a hot mess. Then I identify a piece of something, tenuously. Then it reminds of another thing and is recognized. Then I see relationships between the pieces and the hot mess becomes a hot sense. 🌱🌱🌱 All of that process? It’s just a mental sorting—bits of thought and experience coming to jigsaw themselves into my experience. 🌱🌱🌱 It’s just how mind is made. 🌱🌱🌱 And here’s the thing, mind doesn’t have to be a machine; it can be a flower. Or I can be a garden. ♥️
Slogan 13—Be grateful to everyone. 🌱🌱🌱 There’s that time called the Golden Hour just after sunrise or before sunset when the light is softer, more forgiving. Everything glows with warmth. 🌱🌱🌱 Being grateful is like that, but it’s any time, every time.🌱🌱🌱 Thanks to @johnhiggins2255 who gets gratitude the best. ♥️
Slogan 12—Drive all blames into one. 🌱🌱🌱 This is one that’s hung around for a while; where it’s at currently is that there is always something, I could have done to smooth a situation or ease ruffled feathers for others. 🌱🌱🌱 It’s a really sticky wicket for me because I feel like in some areas at least, I am fierce about kindness. 🌱🌱🌱 But growth isn’t about doing the same thing, it’s about stretching. 🌱🌱🌱 So I guess I’ll be carting the grubbiness around. Fortunately there’s room. ♥️
Slogan 11—When the world is filled with evil, transform all mishaps into the path of bodhi. 🌱🌱🌱 At every step there’s something else, maybe a luxurious stop, maybe a surprise setback, maybe just boredom. Perhaps there’s a series of unfortunate events. 🌱🌱🌱 It’s not about succeeding; it’s not even about getting by; it’s about slowly learning that I am capable enough to meet the world however it shows up. I am loving enough to meet the world however it shows up. I am showing up for the world. ♥️ NB—> this is the top end of my Herb Spiral. It’s a great metaphor but maybe I’ll explain another time. For now, baby Basil is happy.
Slogan 10—Begin the sequence of sending and taking with yourself. 🌱🌱🌱 More softness, more compassion in the world can only start with me. If I want it there, I have to contribute it. 🌱🌱🌱 And if it’s hard to gather up the empathy for a felt experience, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with catching a little compassion for myself and using that to love and soften toward the human condition. 🌱🌱🌱 I’m a part of humankind, not apart from it. ♥️
Slogan 9—In all activities, train with slogans. 🌱🌱🌱 The simple idea is that the slogans are around, posted where you can see them through the day. Also simple is the practice here where I feature one a day, to look at with a bit more depth. 🌱🌱🌱 After a while, cool things happen. The slogans show up for themselves, and stay as long as they are needed. 🌱🌱🌱 As with those pesky plastic tags, it’s helpful to be reminded of what I planted, and useful to see what’s actually blooming. ♥️
Slogan 8—Three objects, three poisons, and three seeds of virtue. 🌱🌱🌱 Sometimes we sort the world, use the push/pull of attachment, anger, or meh to divide our environment into Good, Bad, and What was That Again?🌱🌱🌱 That’s felt.🌱🌱🌱 Softening the feeling has the wonderful effect of making the world a friendlier place, and the division between Pick it, Push it and Pshaw fades. 🌱🌱🌱 Can you tell what’s what here?♥️
Slogan 7—Sending and taking should be practiced alternately. These two should ride the breath. 🌱🌱🌱 This is Tonglen—the breathing practice where the theoretical becomes not rote, but felt. 🌱🌱🌱 In-breath—take on what’s not good/right, anything that feels bad🌱🌱🌱 Out-Breath—give away your good feels, your joy, your empathy. 🌱🌱🌱 This is directly opposed to many new age/spiritual ideas. I can only say that over time, with your breath as a lead, deep changes happen in how you see the world and your place in it. How you see others becomes softer and sweeter. 🌱🌱🌱 It starts as a sitting practice, but eventually it happens wherever. Eventually, ♥️ happens wherever.
Slogan 6—In postmeditation, be a child of illusion. 🌱🌱🌱 It’s a very childlike action—simple. Taking that awareness of how flimsy our constructed world is (that one that develops in contemplation or meditation) and keeping it around for the daily/on the regular. 🌱🌱🌱 What you see is so rarely what you get. ♥️
Slogan 5—Rest in the nature of Alaya, the essence. The space behind observations and persuasions and convictions has a quiet all its own. 🌱🌱🌱 There’s not much impetus toward activity of any kind (this happens before that), just the slow recognition that most of the info coming into us is unreliable and unnecessary. 🌱🌱🌱 Resting is the first step toward acting, rather than reacting. ♥️
