There have only been a handful of times in my life where I have been able to look up at the night sky and see the universe as our ancestors did before humans started putting lights on everything. Sleeping under the stars in the middle of the desert in Baja California, Mexico was one of those experiences where time seemed to stand still as I gazed upon the milky way and watched meteors shoot across the night sky. #night#sky#stars#milkyway#natureasnatureintended#meteor#desert#baja#borntobaja#fieldwork#mexico#travel#adventure#runninwildmedia#runningwild#wildlife#film#photography#earth#longexposure#photo

An amazing red rattlesnake (Crotalus ruber) hanging out under a cactus in the Sonoran Desert of Baja California, Mexico. I love these snakes, especially because they are like heat seeking missiles. Vipers have loreal pits on the front of their face that allow them to sense body heat from warm blooded animals. #desert#herping#snake#rattlesnake#baja#borntobaja#expedition#fieldwork#research#science#adventure#travel#dragonfly#project#gradschool#miamiuniversity#reptiles#wildlife#photography#wildlifephotography#animals#ectotherms#scales#predator

Spent the last two weeks deep in the Sonarán Desert with an amazing group of people all gathered together to make a difference in their communities. Each individual had their own passions but all related to the outdoors and wildlife conservation. We all learned and grew together and left the desert ready to take on the challenging of changing the world. Special thanks to @miamiuniversity for making this happen. #desert#mexico#sonaran#cacti#rocks#sand#wildlife#ecosystem#eco#earth#travel#adventure#sun#life#projectdragonfly#dragonfly#gradschool#masters#biology#fieldwork#fieldresearch#methodology#research

Happy World Ocean Day. For my entire life, I have been told about how great the diversity of life used to be in the sea. I would be told how big and plentiful the fish were, how healthy the corals looked and how divers experienced schools of fish so large they blocked out the sun. I have seen some incredible things in the ocean, but nothing like what has been described to me by older ocean explorers. By working with incredibly passionate people and conservation organizations all over the world, I hope to be that old man one day telling the next generation how our generation turned it all around and saved the ocean and all life within it. #ocean#conservation#water#life#sealife#explorer#runningwild#runningwildmedia#science#biology#climatechange#bigblueocean#worldoceanday#oceanday#divein#scuba#explore#generation#trustscience#earth#fight

I personally think it's silly we have to have designated days to talk about the survival of the human race and planet Earth but regardless I'll play along. Today is World Environment Day and there is this one large blue environment out there that controls basically everything on Earth. The ocean drives weather patterns, provides the oxygen we breath, the water we need and is where life began. Unfortunately, humans are destroying it through overfishing, climate change and pollution. . The fastest and easiest way to immediately start working towards a cleaner world is to stop using single use plastics. Use a reusable water bottle, grab a paper straw, paper cup, paper plate, use a metal fork instead of a plastic one. . I travel a lot and document the ocean regularly, and as I continue to explore the least explored region on Earth, I constantly run into pollution. Bags smothering valuable coral ecosystems, microplastics that are breaking down and releasing toxins into the water and pieces of plastic suffocated wild animals are all examples of things I have personally observed. . This topic is important to me because I, like many of you, enjoy surviving and look forward to a world where I can raise kids surrounded by a safe clean environment. Humans have only been around for a few hundred thousand years and our survival as a species and the millions of others we are taking down with us is dependent upon the health of our oceans. #ocean#health#conservation#travel#plastic#capitolhilloceanweek#sealife#wildlife#coralreef#survival#humans#film#photo#runninwildmedia#pollution#worldenvironmentday#eco#ecosystem#water#life#alive#earth#oceanweek#science#biology#living#community#overfishing

This is the gray headed tanager native to Central and South America. These birds can be observed quickly darting around the forest in search of fruits and insects. One really amazing hunting strategy these birds use is following swarms of army ants marching along the forest floor and feeding on the insects trying to escape from the ant brigade. . Gray headed tanagers also can raise up the feathers on their head to appear larger to intimidate any threats. . While traveling on a Running Wild Expedition, we met up with the Monteverde Institute and helped conduct some bird surveys with mist nets. We identified, sexed, weighed and measured the birds to collect valuable data to help researchers understand forest ecosystem dynamics and and how it is being affected by climate change as we were right on the border of the Monteverde cloud forest. This ecosystem is delicate and exists within a narrow field of parameters. Climate change is causing this ecosystem to move up in elevation and forever changing the forest composition across Costa Rica. . #travel#adventure#photography#wildlife#birds#birdsofinstagram#runningwild#runninwildmedia#costarica#runnningwildexpeditions#nature#earth#animal#birdshots#bestbirdshots#feathers#flight#jungle#passport#science#fightclimatechange#biology#climate#cloudforest#rainforest#conservation#research

I encountered this little one on an expedition in Borneo during a night amphibian survey. This is the black spotted foot flagging frog (Staurois guttatus). They get their bizarre name from a fairly straight forward behavior - sticking their foot out, and flagging. They have lighter colored webbing on their hind limbs that create contrast in the rainforest. Some frogs croak to attract a female and these guys do the hokey pokey. I didn't get a shot of him doing his dance since he seemed to just be cool with sitting on the branch above his rocky stream. Just wasn't in the mood. Nevertheless, was a cool encounter and shows how crazy life is, especially deep in the Bornean rainforest where there is so much left to discover. #explore#borneo#amphibians#travel#fieldwork#frogs#amphibians#rainforest#expedition#life#runningwildmedia#adventure#runningwild#photography#wildlife#nature#animals#conservation#biology#science#wildlifephoto#survey#scicomm#sciencecommunication#earth#forest#indonesia#asia#pacific

Happy turtle day. I filmed this green sea turtle off the coast of Mozambique, Africa. She was a great sport about diving with me and wasn't camera shy. Green sea turtles are endangered because of habitat loss, wildlife trade, by-catch and ocean plastic. Sea turtles were once very plentiful on this planet and thrived for hundreds of millions of years, but over the last few decades, have declined by 90 percent. The best thing to do is just stop using plastic. Like recycling is great and all but barely anything gets recycled anyway. And support fishers that use turtle exclusion devices so these animals don't drown in fishing nets. #seaturtle#turtleday#turtle#ocean#conservation#biology#shell#sea#wildlife#sealife#water#reptile#africa#mozambique#runningwild#runningwildmedia#travel#adventure#scuba#film#underwaterfilm#photography

Female lions will stick around and continue to live with their pride, whereas male lions will eventually leave and form their own pride or find another to take over. . Life is harsh in the bush, but these two cubs don't know anything about that yet. Not while mom is taking such good care of them. . These lizards are primarily herbivores, eating flowers, fruits, leaves and even the poisonous manchineel (beach apple) tree. . These iguanas hold the record for being the fastest lizard on Earth and can run up to 22 miles an hour. Photo by @journeying_justin This young leopard has a full belly thanks to the hard work and dedication of her mother. Remember when you got yelled at as a kid for playing with your food? Well that is exactly how a young leopard learns how to hunt. . I watched, along with @agoetzfilm, as this youngster pounced, clawed and surprised her impala carcass before climbing up a tree to survey the scene. . Leopards are incredible hunters, and when this female is full grown, she will be able to haul prey much heavier than herself up into the branches. . This scarlet macaw was hanging out in the trees in Costa Rica near Carara National Park. I like this photo because it demonstrates the beautiful tool that is the macaw's beak. This crushing machine is meant for cracking the difficult nuts of the forest. They can generate quite the bite and are competitive with dogs in terms of bite force. They also have very dexterous toes that allow them to hold on to various fruits and nuts.
