Thank you so much to @thriveeastbay for inviting me as the guest artist alongside powerful and wise photojournalist @rucha_chitnis this past Sunday. Big thanks to @thrivechoir + @eva_lucion for lifting these songs with your harmonies and your melodies and your rhythms! I began to play guitar and write songs 11 years ago, and I couldn’t have dreamed where this music would be taking me. I am excited to continue listening to the muses and showing up in the most real form of myself as I can. Featured songs: Gentle Heart & Yellow Lotus Flower 🌼 #spirit#community#activism#art#music#eastbay#california#thrivechoir
Oh great spirit I pray to be strong For when I am needed most To keep on keepin on Oh great spirit I pray to be wise For it’s the little ones coming next Who will see through our eyes (Photo of official badass indigenous activist @pennieplant speaking words of wisdom...moments before I had led this song in front of Wells Fargo, while the thunderbird woman rising was being painted across the street. 11.6.2017) This is one of my absolute favorite songs to lead at direct actions. Song leading at direct actions has become a way that allows my wild voice to be set free, in service of the better world we know is possible. When we let our wild voices free in the public sphere, in court rooms, on street corners, in subways, in the places our wild voices "don't belong"...well, that's when people really start to hear our songs. The civil rights movement knew the importance of song. The purpose of the Thrive Street Choir is to support the movement of our generation, for climate + racial justice, human dignity, and a fossil-free world, through music. Would you like to be a song leader, but feel like you need some training? Or a boost of confidence? Or some practice? Or a kick in the butt? Well if so, come to our song leader training this Wednesday evening! 1330 Broadway Oakland, CA 6:30-9:00 PM April 3, 2019 ALSO, The next big action coming up will be the Extinction rebellion...sound the alarm for a living future ⏰ Monday, April 15th 4 PM UN Plaza, San Francisco #protestmusic#activism#songleader#training#oaklandactivism#oakland#thrivestreetchoir#thriveeastbay@thriveeastbay

I’ve officially left Neverland. 💔 The last 48 hours I immersed myself in the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland about the excruciatingly detailed account of childhood molestation of two young boys who are now in their late 30s early 40s. And It all adds up. It is so hard for people to believe that someone who they love and idolized could have done such traumatizing things behind the scenes, but I believe it now 💯 percent. I recommend watching this for anyone who is/was a Michael Jackson fan. As a music teacher, I will not be sharing any more of his songs with my kids this year. I’m still processing it all, and it is so hard to accept that many of the brightest lights also have the deepest shadows. But I’ve seen it in my personal experience with people as well...so I believe it. MJ was definitely traumatized as a kid, and we should understand that as part of the story...but it doesn’t excuse his actions as an adult. Well...here’s for more peeling back of the veil.... #leavingneverland#ibelievethem#musicteacher#teacherlife#musicianofinstagram#truth#hardtoswallow
Capitalism has an insatiable appetite for making us feel like we are not enough. Not attractive enough. Not successful enough. Not brave enough. Not famous enough. Not smart enough. Not ________ enough. Well #enoughisenough Enough is enough I lay down the stories in my mind that I am not enough. On some level, we are nothing—cosmic dust. On some level, the chaos of our world requires everything we’ve got—and it’s not enough. But today. And tomorrow. And the next day. For my own mental health, and for the vitality it takes to BE cosmic dust working towards a better world...I have to believe that I. Am. Enough. So here is some daily wisdom from Joanna Macy + an altar by my dear brother Day @morningaltars That was made to feed the Gods of Enough. ................................ I cannot fail to mention, that social media is part of the capitalist system helping people to feel not enough. So please, next time you think someone’s life is better than yours, turn off the screen, touch your heart, and find gratitude for what you have in your life. Because it’s YOUR life and you can never have someone else’s. This is the way it’s meant to be, and we each have a sacred thread that is ours to weave into the web. And I’m writing you but I’m saying WE and this is a practice I’ve been doing now to counteract the toxicity of comparison. SO..... You are enough. I am enough. Love you all ✌🏼 #lovequotes#love#activism#endcapitalism#selflove#inspiration#claiming#honoring#womenswisdom#power#joannamacy#loveyourself
So proud of my mama for receiving an induction into the Hall of Fame for Women Leaders in NonProfit. My mom will be retiring this summer from working for 42 YEARS as a social worker all the way up to chief operating officer for 200+ staff at the Children’s Village in New York- CV serves children in foster care, residential treatment, homeless shelters, and more recently serves as a safe home, education, and legal support system for immigrant minors. My mom has led the charge on doing racial justice work within her organization for the last 10+ years and she literally says she still loves to go to work every day. I never knew growing up that it was special and rare to have a mom like this, and I appreciate her more and more as the years go by. So just want to say CONGRATULATIONS to my mom, Mona Swanson, for your life work, service, and so many bonds you’ve made throughout the years. There will be many celebrations in the months to come and I hope I’ll get a few more opportunities to brag about you. Love you. ❤️
From music video shoot to Oakland Teachers picket line- all in a days work. Cannot wait to release some new music videos for you all this spring 🤗 AND way to go Oakland Teachers Union, who successfully picketed to stop a school board meeting tonight. The fight for higher standards in education continues. #andsoitgoes#redfored#oaklandteacherstrike#newmusic#musicvideo#spiritmusic#jenmyzel#makingmusic#beauty#art#music#musicteacher#activism#life Photo cred @cedar.ranney + @sacredwitnessmedia - thank you for today!
I am #redfored and #strikeready tomorrow, in solidarity with the Oakland Teachers Union #oaklandteachers I am a public school music teacher but not Publicly employed because the arts have already been stripped from most public schools. The only reason my school has a music program for K-5th graders is because the families have the means and will to fundraise for it. And that goes for aids, reading specialists, physical education, and field trips as well. It’s heart breaking honestly. The lack of public funding going towards education. So even though I could technically go to work tomorrow, I will not be crossing the picket line, and instead helping run an alternative strike school until new contracts have been signed, wages have been raised, and there is more money given to public education. It’s heart-warming and inspiring to be part of a grassroots organizing team of parents and teachers who are saying #enoughisenough Message me if you want to find out how to plug in with support! We don’t know how long the strike will go but the longer it goes, the more help will be needed.
Oooh concert announcement! I will be playing an evening of original music, from ritual songs like “Gentle Heart” to lyrical, soulful folk songs weaving themes of ancestry, activism, Earth Connection and beauty. In my spider-loving ways, the evening will be a woven web of song, storytelling, and an interactive Work that Reconnects experience. My dear sister @eva_lucion will be joining me on percussion. March 9 PLACE for Sustainable Living Oakland, CA 7:30-10:30 PM Can’t wait to share these songs from my soul to yours! 💫🔥💫 Tickets are available now on Eventbrite. Gotta love when a room full of my adult friends request a Yellow Lotus Flower sing-a-long party 😆 Because we all know my newly released musical picture book is #notjustforkids So grateful to spend the weekend with some brilliant shiny ladies and gents in a cozy cabin snowstorm 🙏🏼❤️ #singalong#childrensbooks#selfpublished#homeschool#consciouskids#newchildrensbook#teacherlife#musicteacher#grateful#snow#nevadacity#california#folkmusic#homegrown@yellowlotusflower#yellowlotusflower@email@example.com@simshine__
Dear Child Within, Can you please remember to play, always? Can you please remember to cry? Can you please remember that you are innocent? Thanks. Love, Your adult person Today, @wild.magic and I sang our children’s book @yellowlotusflower to a room full of tender-hearted adults after their morning prayer service at the @oaklandcsl Oakland Center for Spiritual Living. At the end, one former kindergarten teacher asked for her book to be addressed to her child within. ☺️ That is EXACTLY who this book is for. Actual Children AND the child within every single adult alive. It was so beautiful to sing to those little souls inside of big grown bodies today. What a treat. Thanks for having us! #yellowlotusflower#ocsl#spiritualcommunity#childrensbooks#newauthor#illustrations#wildmagic#prayer#innerchild
There is a thing in me that dreamed of trees, A quiet house, some green and modest acres A little way from every troubling town, A little way from factories, schools, laments. I would have time, I thought, and time to spare, With only streams and birds for company. To build out of my life a few wild stanzas. And then it came to me, that so was death, A little way away from everywhere There is a thing in me still dreams of trees, But let it go. Homesick for moderation, Half the world’s artists shrink or fall away. If any find solution, let him tell it. Meanwhile I bend my heart toward lamentation Where, as the times implore our true involvement, The blades of every crisis point the way. I would it were not so, but so it is.
