There are few things better than enjoying a beautiful night under the stars. I hope everyone finds a little time and some clear skies to enjoy before Summer wraps up! I I'm just getting back from a trip where I took a bit of time offline. Peak my stories to get a little preview of some of the stuff I'm working on. I'm not yet sure when/where it will be shared, but it was definitely a lot of fun. So much exciting stuff to work on processing, delicious coffee to drink, emails to send, trips to plan! It's going to be an exciting Fall/Winter! I can't wait to share more news with everyone! Just about a month away and there's only 1 spot remaining for our Dark Sky Workshop at the Jasper Dark Sky Festival! Link in my story for that as well! #sigmaart#dellxps#sandiego#nightscaper#wheninrhone#foreverforward#drinkcoffeedostuff

Swipe -> to see the full pano! I've worked on this one on and off since getting back from my trip, so I'm pretty stoked to finally share it! I shot the sky tracked with just slightly longer exposures and then, of course, another row of untracked shots for the foreground. If you're not familiar, "tracked" means I used a device that keeps my camera pointing at the same spot in the sky to compensate for the rotation of the Earth. I was shooting with the @sigmaphoto 28mm, so normally I'd be limited to exposures between 5-10 seconds. Using the tracker and I was able to take 30 second exposures and pick up even more detail in the the Milky Way and across the rest of the sky as well. I actually started editing this one on my XPS 2-in-1 while I was on the road, stitching the images together and a few edits, and then transferred Photoshop file to my setup at home. It's kind of been the edit I've worked on in between all my other stuff going on. Sometimes, I'd rather keep coming back to an image with fresh eyes until I'm totally happy with it instead of rushing to get it done. So, it was nice to be able to do that with this one. Hope you like it! It's looking like there's a decent change of Northern lights for mid/high latitudes, so keep an eye on sites like Space Weather and the NOAA Aurora Forecast! #sigmaart#sigma28mm#mtrainier#visitrainier#milkywaychasers#nightscaper#dellxps#doneonadell#drinkcoffeedostuff#wheninrhone#mountrainiernationalpark

Hopeful - No matter how many ways I find to describe being out under a dark sky, I'm not sure words will ever properly do it justice. It can be a rush of emotions. While I don't give titles to every photo, I named this one Hopeful. No matter what's going on in the world, being out under the night sky gives me a feeling of hope. Hope that I'll be able to share the amazing feeling of awe. Hope to find and share moments of kindness that can make even a small difference. Lots of new photos to share, but I just wanted to take a second to share this one with you. Before & After - Watching the last bit of light fade from the sky and counting as the stars appear one by one will forever be something I love. It's just such a magical time and before you know it, you're surrounded by stars in every direction you look. In the first of a few exciting announcements, I actually processed this image, and many others already posted!) using my astro presets that I've been working on for a while now! I'm super excited about them and can't wait to officially release them. I'm going to be doing a free post-processing webinar and intro to the presets this Wednesday evening from 6-7PM PST. If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll send over the invite link. I'll be doing more in the future, but this first one will be special and is a little more low-key than the future ones will be. I can't wait! To those who read past the first sentence of a post, I hope you'll be able to join! Let's stay up all night and watch the stars I love finding new places to shoot. Sometimes, I'll put on one of my favorite playlists and just drive. I’ll keep exploring until I find something exciting. For this shot, I actually spent a lot of time scouting Google Earth first. I drove out a few days later and couldn't wait to shoot! There was just a bit of light from the Moon as it set and the stars began to shine even brighter. I was pretty excited about this one and I hope you like it, too! Incredible stargazing over Mt. Rainier while shooting with the first @sigmaphoto 14-24 f2.8 ART E-mount lens in North America! It was my first time photographing Mt Rainier and it wasn't without challenges. Clouds, fog, and tons of traffic because of a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert all made things interesting in their own way. I didn't have much time, but I managed to take just a few photos with the newly redesigned 14-24 f2.8 ART. It's a lot smaller and lighter than the DSLR version (28 ounces compared to 40). You can check out a few more images and read about all the differences via the link in my story! I was in the Rainier/Seattle area for a workshop with Sigma and @glazerscamera. We had awesome classroom session in store and then two nights in the field. The weather didn't fully cooperate on two out of four of my nights up there, but it was an awesome trip. Huge thank you to everyone that attended the workshops and helped make it all come together. I can't wait to see all of the images! A few months back I took these images with the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 ART using the MC-11 to adapt the Canon mount to my Sony. Before switching to Sigma lenses and my A7RII, the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 was my go-to lens. When I got the chance to take the Sigma version for a spin, I was pretty excited and the results blew me away. These are just a few images I took on my first nights out with the lens in Anza Borrego and Joshua Tree. The second shot actually shows the @ISS passing through the Arch Rock in JT! So stoked to have caught that! Check out my story for a link to the full in depth write-up I did with a whole bunch of sample images. It was just recently announced that this lens will be available soon for the Sony E mount! With the recent announcement of the A7R4, this is pretty awesome timing. If you shoot the night sky, this lens should definitely be on your radar! #sigmaart#sigmaphoto#sigma1424#joshuatree#joshuatreenationalpark#anzaborrego

So excited to have two workshops coming up!! Later this month, the 27/28th, I'll be heading to Washington to teach a workshop with Sigma and Glazer's Camera! We'll have a classroom session at Glazer's and then head out to photograph Mount Rainier! I'm super stoked for this one! Not only should the shooting be epic, but we'll have a whole selection of Sigma ART lenses for you to test out, too! Hit the link in my story for details and to reserve your spot! After that, my next and last workshop of the year will be at the Jasper Dark Sky Festival this October 20-24th! After a sold out workshop last year, @photojbartlett and I couldn't wait to run one again this year! The festival line up looks a-mazing, too! So, if you've been thinking about attending the dark sky festival, you should definitely check it out! Link in stories. So much goes in to creating an image before it's shot and eventually gets posted online. This timelapse sequence and two behind the scenes images capture the moments as I was shooting one of my recent and new favorite images. They're all part of a post I created to show all the way from the in-camera capture to applying the finishing touches on my #DellXPS 15 2-in-1. The timelapse and related stills aren't staged at all. While the first still simply shows me at my camera bag, the second shows the exact moment my 20+ long exposures started with my other camera. Although the Milky Way is visible in the last image, it's taken with a much wider angle lens and much shorter exposure. By shooting multiple long exposures and then stacking them in post processing, I was able to create a much cleaner and more detailed image. If that sounds at all confusing, be sure to head over to my blog post via the link in my profile and check out the full post. For the first time ever, I recorded my entire editing process all while hanging out at a coffee shop! Not your usual editing work space, right? Go see how I pulled it all off and let me know what you think! #dellxps#dellinsidecircle

The night sky never ceases to fill me with endless wonder and that's a bit of what I was hoping to capture here. I'm so excited to share this image and the related blog post with everyone. It touches on planning, to an in field behind the scenes timelapse, to a video of the full edit on my #DellXPS 15 2-in-1 (taken while hanging out at one of my favorite coffee shops!) If you swipe through the images, you can see a preview of me editing this image while on the go. This is the first time I've ever recorded myself editing an image before! You can watch the full edit in the blog post! Swiping through, you'll also see what my setup looked like in the field. I arrived early to make sure everything would line up and navigating in the dark would be less of an issue. This image almost didn't happen. I knew the forecast was calling for gusts between 50-60mph, but I still decided to go for it. I had been planning a shot with a different lens, but the wind was just too much to pull off the multiple minute exposures I had originally planned. I made a last minute decision to change things up and I'm so excited with how it turned out. I love how frame is filled with the core of the Milky Way. Watch me edit this photo and read about the whole process through the link in my profile or stories! Let me know if you'd like to see more content like this, too! This is the first time I've ever recorded the edit of one of my images and it was a lot fun! #dellxps#dellinsidecircle

Congratulations to Grand Canyon National Park on receiving it's official designation as an International Dark Sky Park! It took three years once they received their status as a provisional dark sky park, but after replacing over 1,800 light fixtures they were rewarded with the official designation on June 17th! It's so awesome to see more and more places make the effort to protect our view of the stars. These images are from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon looking at Wotans Throne. I hung out there during blue hour and snapped a few images and then waited for the stars to appear. One by one and then what felt like hundreds at a time, the sky was just unbelievably full of stars. I think a trip back is in order! #grandcanyon#northrim#internationaldarkskypark#milkywaychasers#nightscaper#night_excl#findyourpark#dellxps#sigmaart#foreverforward

It's been the week of bioluminescence! I've been out a lot over the last week hoping for a shot to line up that still hasn't worked out. Although the forecasts have been calling for clear skies, this is about as close as I've gotten near the coast. It may not be the shot I've been chasing, but it's been amazing watching the waves glow blue again. If you check my stories, I took a couple short videos of some of the most intense blue waves I've ever seen! It's always tough to head out night after night and not have much to show for it. Especially when you know the image you're hoping to capture and it just doesn't work out. I've lost count of the number of times the forecast has been wrong, I'm more than happy to deal with plans going sideways or just not working at all. I'll take that a thousand times over the, "it could've worked if I had just tried" thoughts. Those are the ones that are difficult to deal with. The moon is getting pretty bright, but if you let your eyes adjust and try to get away from the light pollution there's still a chance of seeing the bioluminescence! Good luck if you decide to head out! Sony A7RII - @sigma 14mm f1.8 ART @Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 #sigmaart#doneonadell#dellxps#wheninrhone#bioluminescence#bio-luminescence

I am so excited to both share this photo and the news that it is today's NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day! I took this photo at the end of last Summer while road tripping up the coast with Kona. I was originally hoping to just take some photos of the Milky Way near the keyhole arch and had no idea I'd also be shooting bioluminescence! Although I had shot it before, this was my first chance to take photo with Kona and I in the shot. Knowing how much Kona loves splashing in the waves asking him to stay still for the duration of the 13 second exposure was not going to be easy. We had a few failed attempts, but I was so excited and in immediately in love with this photo that I felt like I wanted to wait to share it. I wasn't sure what I would be waiting for, but I just felt like I needed something special to share it with. I ended up sharing this for the first time during my TEDx talk while sharing stories of some of my adventures with Kona. I am beyond thrilled to be able to share it today along with the news!
