- Photo by @amivitale // Fatu is one of only two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, following the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino who died due to age related complications on March 19th at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in Kenya. Fatu and her mother Najin are the last of the species remaining in the world and may hold the keys to saving the entire species.
Sudan’s death could mean the extinction of his species, though scientists are considering other options involving Fatu and Najin, including stem cell procedures and harvesting eggs. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals.
