Hah! Thank goodness for the guided straightener in LR. Not perfect but helped. These long perspective shots with plenty of vert and horiz lines can be so easily ruined by too much haste (battery was at 2% at this point)! First big ride of the year! My brother and I went from old Riverbend all the way to an Anthony Henday overpass and back. On the way back we got lost in a maze of never ending single track insanity! Corkscrewing, ascending and descending, spiraling and high speed wall riding, seriously it was never ending. We even found a guerrilla built natural bike “trick bowl” with a crazy wee crisscrossing track with huge jumps and tight vertical turning walls. Managed to set a star down on google maps in the middle of tree’d nowhere. The ride ended up being 3.5hrs long and 11pm night-time darkness when we finally emerged the forest right where we meant to. I hope we can find these trails again as we have no idea where we took a “wrong turn”. We actually started going through thoughts of parallel dimensions and being trapped the trail went so long within the city! We saw 3 deer, one of which followed and stayed@close for a long time, watching us in the bike trick bowl, a@massive Raven that landed right above me watching me and had a chat, and big ass super chill Porcupine bossing it along the trail in the dark. . . . . . . #yegbike#yegspring#edmontontourism#yegphotographer#lostathome#yegsunset#yegwildlife#northsaskatchewanriver#anthonyhendaybridge#anthonyhenday

This is a shot of the Sturgeon River in St Albert, captured for a publication I am contributing to on Métis history in the region. The banks of the river, running through the city, are extremely fertile and were lush with forests, lived in and travelled by Indigenous peoples for 10,000 years; Métis, fur traders and eventually the arrival of Father Lacombe’s mission. The resulting communities divided the area’s land using the ‘seigneurial’ system, creating long river lots extending inland from the river banks. Today there are only traces left of this lot system with the land being sold and lost in a complex set of events leading to the present day city of St Albert! . . . . . . . . #Métis#StAlbert#sturgeonriver#yegphotographer#travelalberta#albertatourism#sonyalphaclub#sonya7s#zeiss1635#albertahistory

I don’t smoke, but if I did I would roll my own. Roadside antique stores are the best. Chock-full of fascinating old stuff you can spend hours digging around. Often times the antiques don’t end within the walls of the store as the owners usually live on the property as well. Strike up a conversation and a tour of the sheds and workshops and garages full of stuff is happily given. So fun, such iconic design through the decades. These tins are great, reminding me of the old cigarette vending machines in bars and lounges up until the ‘90s at some point. . . . . . . #yegphotographer#antiques#sonya7s#zeiss1635#roadside#junk#cigarettes#vintagebranding#tins#tobacco

Melt water tumbling down from the ancient Saskatchewan Glacier way up in the Columbia Icefields begins our beloved Kisiskatchewan‘s long journey across Alberta’s prairies to Saskatchewan to eventually meet with the South Saskatchewan river. To have such an accessible and amazing area to enjoy the head waters of Kisiskatchewan, or “swift-flowing river” in Cree, is a real treat. Putting my hand in the River I can imagine the water meandering passed all the Edmontonian’s playing in the river valley back home. The colours get super incredible here. This particular photo is from the fall of 2013 and since then the Pine Beatle has really taken a toll on the trees. Now that I mention it, it will be interesting to compare each years photos and see whats transpired year by year, I may have a series if I can find enough photos of this mountain slope you see across the water. This is why you don’t hear me complaining about the cold in winter, darkness yes, cold not so much. We need any help we can get to control this scourge sweeping across our Wilderness. . . . . . . . #davidthompsoncountry#albertatourism#yegphotographer#nordegg#kootnayplains#kootenay#northsaskatchewanriver#albertafall#sonya700#travelalberta@davidthompsoncountry

I left home at the crack of dawn, headed west to Nordegg, Alberta. I went down the smaller highways to be sure to hit Rimby for spring water on my way into wilderness. As the sun came free of the horizon it began to chase the morning fog from the many small dips in the foothills. I found a lovely strip of road crossing by a low lying stream and flowery meadow. The time for some sweet exposures was ripe. I spent the next hour or so shooting bracketed shots of the fog, running up and down the hill, even getting back in the car and furiously driving back and forth along the road chasing the light and fog like a maniac. I managed several great shots and really got to explore HDR merging. One of my biggest pet peeves in photography is when overly eager shooters push the HDR way too crazy turning it into a “painting” or simply ripping your eyes out with too much colour saturation and a flat profile void of depth. I hope I’ve done HDR proud here by respecting the limits of this shot that I at least have for the HDR craft. . . . . . . #SonyA700#yegphotographer#sigma1850f28#sunrise#albertatourism#nordegg#rimby#roadtrip#roadtowilderness#tourcanada#fogroad#foggymorning

I’m getting stoked for road trips and tenting in the wild with the warmer weather and longer days. We are quite lucky in Alberta to have so many different types of landscapes all within a few hours drive. Mountains, prairies, boreal forests, desserts, giant cedars (secret location) and one of my favourites, the badlands. There’s some really wild isolated locations we head to where you can go for a multi hour naked hike with no worries of finding a single soul, human that is. Plenty of deer, coyotes, cows, crows and the occasional cowpoke, like this one! . . . . . . #travelalberta#badlands#dinosaurs#fossils#sonya7s#sonyalphaclub#zeiss1635#rockhounding#yegphotographer#rangeland#reddeerriver#cowboys#cowpokes

The finest selection of circa 1984 cross country ski designs! This seriously brings me back to the days when I was just learning to ski in the 80’s. When I was 12 years old on a cross country ski trip to Jasper with my father we had an interesting experience on the trail. Along a 15km track in the mountains I began seeing what appeared to be Caribou hoof prints in the snow. At first they were just leisurely cross-crossing the path. I was filled with warm thoughts of grazing mega-fauna along the isolated crops country ski track. As the km’s passed the prints began to look hurried and indecisive, I wondered what was taking place. Then I saw what appeared to be the reason, a Wolf track joining the hooves crossing all over. Then another Wolf track and more panic in the hoof tracks, and then another set of Wolf prints! My mind began painting a picture of a pack of Wolves hunting down the Caribou, closing in...I was a bit worried as they looked fresh. As I rounded a corner onto a long straight-away I saw a massive large silhouette on the ground way up ahead, all tracks leading straight to it. “Oh Shit!” I thought. As my father and I continued along we began seeing blood trailing to the dark figure with signs of struggles. Not surprisingly the dark lump turned out to be the massive carcass of this very Caribou I had been so warmly imagining foraging through the woods! Torn to pieces and surrounded by copious blood it looked fresh enough to have taken place the day prior. Now we were very worried. We cross country ski’d as though it were an Olympic downhill slalom on flat ground! It was an amazing story to unfold before us merely by reading foot prints in the beautiful mountain snow. . . . . . #jaspernationalpark#yegphotographer#sonya7s#crosscountryski#fatherson#wolf#caribou#childhoodmemories#storytime#sonyalphasclub#tourismalberta

Sometimes a crappy photo can teach you a lot. As I was photographing the “main event” (bridge) I turned and saw a ribbon of light crossing the landscape and the thick receding layers of fog in the distance. I stopped down a bit to capture as much gnarliness as I could but when I reviewed the capture I simply thought to myself “Meh, that’s crap”. However once I gave the image a chance in Lightroom I was able to draw out some of what I was actually seeing. I learned I should give my intuition a little more credit and at least try the best composition possible in that fleeting moment of light, you never know what you might find in the RAW file. Also, stopping down for maximum texture gnarl is great! . . . . . #gnarl#gnarly#gnarliness#textures#fog#clouds#lightstreaks#foggyyeg#northsaskatchewanriver#springbreakup#stoppingdown#yegtourism#sonya7s#zeiss1635#sonyalphasclub#yegrivervalley#yegwinter#hashtagwhorestatus

The Never Ending Story was one of my favorite movies as a little kid and on March 23rd when I opened my curtains in the morning, I thought The Nothing had enveloped us all. I could not even see the ground below me from my fifth story window. By the time I got out to make some exposures this Nothing was quickly receding. I did however manage a handful of interesting photos, like this one looking up at the new towers in the Ice District. . . . . . #theneverendingstory#thenothing#fog#foggyyeg#buildingsinthefog#icedistrict#icedistrictyeg#rogersplaceyeg#rogersplacearena#travelalberta#yegtourism#sonya7s#zeiss1635#heavyclouds#earlyworm#sonyalphasclub
