At the beginning of #RefugeeWeek2019 we'd like to share a story of one of the amazing survivors that we've supported recently at the Helen Bamber Foundation: Sithara* is a female survivor of torture from Sri Lanka. Whilst volunteering for a humanitarian charity, Sithara was arrested and tortured by the police. Sithara came to the UK on a student visa, and whilst here, found out a case had been filed against her under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Scared of what would happen to her if she returned, she claimed asylum in the UK. When Sithara was referred to HBF, her mental health was deteriorating; she had recently taken an overdose, shortly before discovering she was pregnant. Sithara’s pregnancy was progressing and she was being pressured to leave her accommodation. ‘I’m so afraid of becoming homeless’ HBF did everything we could to ensure that Sithara was housed in a safe environment for her and her child and after a long and gruelling process, we were told that suitable accommodation had finally been secured, two days after the birth of her baby. ‘We greatly appreciate your support at our darkest times’ Now Sithara and her baby are safe. Our vision is a world where all survivors of extreme human cruelty have freedom, safety and power. Help us work towards that vision and support many more men and women in need, just like Sithara. Please share this story and donate today. #endtorture#hbf#refugeeweek2019#freedomsafetypower *All names are pseudonyms

In our last post of Volunteers' Week 2019, here is Volunteer Profile No.6: Annie, a volunteer Assistant Psychologist with the Therapy team... For the last couple of months, I’ve been volunteering as an Assistant Psychologist with the Therapy team at HBF, and enjoying a rare opportunity to hone my psychological skills without being required to be a psychologist. I love helping our clients, doing everything from being the first person a client meets with when they join the service, to evaluating how clients are doing before and after therapy, to running sessions which prepare clients for trauma-focused therapy. It’s been great getting stuck in, and being able to see clients on my own within weeks of starting the role. One thing that’s really stood out so far was a meeting I had with a client who’s been through all of our services and spent an hour dismissing all of the questions I had to ask her, saying she no longer had any problems! #VolunteersWeek#volunteer#volunteering

Our volunteers had a wonderful time at our Volunteers' Dinner last night! We watched Helen's Song, a film about our choir Woven Gold and our founder Helen Bamber's life work, and tucked into some delicious food. A lovely way to close Volunteers' Week 2019! #VolunteersWeek#volunteer#volunteering

We recently had this beautiful email from a former client: Hi, I hope you are doing well. I was granted 5 years’ right to remain in UK yesterday! Yesterday was the happiest day ever. I couldn't sleep all night because I was thinking about having a safe life and not needing to worry about death. Thank you so much for all you have done to support me, and the two really useful reports from you. I will always be grateful to you. Thank you so much again for saving my life. Our volunteers are amazing people, and each one of them contributes in their own way to changing lives. Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers! #VolunteersWeek#volunteer#volunteering

Volunteers' Week Volunteer Profile No.5... Temple, Community and Integration casework volunteer: For the last two years, I’ve enjoyed volunteering with the Integration team at HBF, helping clients to find volunteering opportunities. As an organisation, I love that HBF provides a vital service to community members who are often forgotten by the system and marginalised despite their strengths and perseverance. I love connecting with the clients, standing in solidarity with those who have suffered unjustly, and laughing and learning with individuals comfortable in the safe space that is the HBF community. I particularly remember finding a client a place to volunteer for the first time. I had spent a substantial amount of time with this man, but it was only when he was told, ‘yes, come in tomorrow,’ that I finally saw him smile, having found a sense of belonging and acceptance. #VolunteersWeek#volunteer#volunteering

Volunteers' Week Volunteer Profile No.4... Jessy, Photography Group Volunteer Leader: I’ve been volunteering with the Photography Group, part of the clients’ Community Arts and Skills Programme, at HBF for nearly four years now. I was feeling very frustrated with my inability to help with the ongoing refugee crisis, and I wanted to find a way to have a positive social impact, so I was keen to use my photography skills to make a difference. I really love the sense of community at the Photography Group, and the opportunity to learn about other cultures, and it’s wonderful to see the sense of excitement that I feel about photography reflected in others. We’ve put on three exhibitions, including a current one at UCL, and have a fourth coming up this month for Refugee Week in Brighton. It's always so rewarding for the clients to see their work being displayed in public! Volunteers' Week Volunteer Profile No.3... Raffaella, Reception volunteer and admin support with the Legal team: For a while I’ve wanted to volunteer with a small charity where I could see the local impact I was having, so when I heard about HBF through a friend and I looked on the website, I decided to move to the UK to start volunteering in January this year. I really appreciate the opportunity to learn from different experts across the charity; it feels very non-hierarchical and inclusive, because we’re all working towards the same goal, just from different angles in different teams. I love seeing our clients with a smile on their face because of something someone’s done for them. Over the winter, we had a massive donation of coats, and one day one of our clients went through the lot trying them on and modelling them for the people in reception; it was a small thing, but it was lovely to watch! #VolunteersWeek#volunteer#volunteering

Volunteers Week Volunteer Profile No.2... Fares, Housing and Welfare casework volunteer: I’m volunteering with HBF over the summer before going to Law School in the USA, so I’ve been here for about a month and a half. Volunteering at HBF has been a way to gain experience as an advocate for vulnerable individuals who have urgent needs like finding housing or dealing with poverty. I love knowing that I’m having a positive impact on our clients’ lives and helping them to know their needs are being attended to. A particularly lovely memory which will stay with me was helping a client to settle into her new permanent home, doing everything from going with her to viewings, helping her pick out paint colours, and getting her things moved in. Now she’s safe and settled, which is amazing. #volunteer#volunteering#VolunteersWeek
