Gonna need you guys to send me some extra #Brave vibes tonight as I am so, so very bummed that I won’t be able to make it to the @bravelikegabe 5k tomorrow — because I am in the hospital with an infection and need a procedure done bright & early in the AM. Literally the worst timing ever but I’m working with an all-star crew of friends, family, sponsors, and the ACCRF to make sure it’s a great race in St. Paul. . It’s not lost on me that maybe this is one of the most poignant ways to show just how critical research is. Cancer is nothing if not incredibly inconvenient and we need more options. I wish I didn’t have to show it in this way because there’s so many people I’d love to meet and catch up with tomorrow (including my grandma who I don’t see very often ❤️). . But I’m gonna be brave and fight these fevers and hopefully the procedure will help me out big time. 🙏 Prayers very much welcome. . Have a heck of a time out there and celebrate what you’ve helped support and accomplish through the research grant! So overwhelmed by the love and I can’t wait to hear the recap. ❤️ #bravelikegabe5k#bebrave#rarecancerresearch

Say hi 👋 to me at the 5k and I’ll give you a #runningonhope temp tattoo 🤗 I’ll be out there just having fun and getting to the finish line! On Friday I was in the ER (again), today I somewhat unexpectedly got my stents replaced (they weren’t working anymore). But this quote reminds me to keep pushing on. Tomorrow I’m heading to California to take a much-needed getaway with the husband and see our fave band @thenational. Then we are heading to #silodistrictmarathon in Waco to support the awesome races hosted by our friends at @magnolia with our friends & family, and YES I’m still planning and getting excited to raise funds for rare cancer research with the @bravelikegabe 5k after that! Cancer can slow me down but I’m not letting it stop me. And now a shameless plug: ENTER THE BRAVE LIKE GABE 5k PLEEEEEASE! 🥳 And a hug and thanks to everyone who already has. 😊 Hope to see y’all in either Waco, St. Paul, or virtually! . Thanks @jacquelinealnes for these fun drawings! More in my story. 🤗

Keep showing up. — @des_linden . In a million different ways, on a million different days. . Honored to be on the same @brooksrunning team as Des and a tiny part of the inspiration that powered this tenacious woman to a 5th place finish at #bostonmarathon yesterday. She’s inspired me to #keepshowingup in my life as well! Maybe back on the track, maybe not — but wherever I am, I’ll be there. Check out the article in my story for more about Des’ race yesterday and future. She’s been so fun to cheer for I sure hope she’s not done yet! 🙏 . Here’s a departure from my regularly scheduled programming (mostly napping and scavenging for more food) to let you know that the ✨2019 Brave Like Gabe 5k✨ registration is open and we would LOVE for you to join our team! 💪 . The reason I’m using a photo from last year’s race is because I haven’t been running much lately. This new medicine (Lenvatinib) has been a tough adjustment but I’m getting in some walking, biking, and elliptical when I don’t feel like running. Small victories. 💖 I’ll spare you some of my other side effects because, at least for today, I ain’t here for sympathy! I’m here to ask for help. . Since my recurrence of a rare, incurable cancer called adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2016, life as I knew it changed quite drastically. And yet, it’s still a pretty good life. 💖 There’s still joy and magic and pain in my abdominal scar from laughing so damn hard. But the one thing that fills me up like nothing else is working with my foundation (@bravelikegabe) and other organizations to make a world of better outcomes for patients who are or will be in my shoes. . April is Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month and one of the last things I heard from my doc last month was: “We’ve made so much progress on many head/neck malignancies, ACC is just one of the toughest and we still don’t have an FDA-approved therapy. I’m so sorry.” I don’t want anyone to ever have to hear that! It hurts my ears and my feelings. I can’t fund every single rare cancer type all at once (we will keep trying!) but we can join together for a run fueled by hope and take a big swing at ACC. 100% of your registration fee will fund a rare cancer research grant for the ACCRF. All we need is YOU to get this thing off the ground. If it’s anything like last year I know I’ll be absolutely floored by the support and generosity of my fellow humans. . Race in St. Paul is May 5th with @anderson_races with a free kids run and a mini-expo! Virtual run is again hosted by @athletebizusa and @strava is helping us connect to a leaderboard through their Strava Challenges. . Thanks for considering joining us! Link in my bio will show where to go to register for either race. . 💖 Gabe #runningonhope

How does @chipgaines make marathoning look so FUN?! Is it the pants, the tool belt, OR my jokes? 😂🤔 (Jk it’s obviously his jokes!) . There’s about 6 weeks left until we hit the pavement in Waco for the #SiloDistrictMarathon events — which means you can still join us! 🤗 Chip is going down in distance to the 1/2 marathon since checking marathoner ✅ off his list last year and I’m hoping to run the 1/2 as well after last year’s 5k. We both have a little work to do to feel fully ready for 13.1 miles on April 28th but I think we will get there. 💪 If you run consistently I would say you probably have just enough time to build up to a 1/2 marathon but if you want to keep it a little more chill, consider signing up for a 5k — I LOVE a good 5k! The link to register is in my bio and if you’ve always wanted to check out the @magnolia Market in person or enjoy the goodies at Silos Baking Co. or @magnoliatable — this is the time to make the trip! ✨ . I still can’t believe that a chance encounter with Chip & Joanna and their crew in NYC in 2017 led to friendship, support, and the creation of an awesome road race weekend in Waco with proceeds benefiting cancer research! Sometimes life surprises you in the best ways. ❤️ . #silodistrictmarathon#waco#magnolia#magnoliamarket#bravelikegabe#rarecancerresearch#seeyouatthesilos

Leaving New York slightly fitter than I was when I arrived last week, which really isn’t saying much. But hey I’m back out there so that’s something. 😅 . I even got in some spin/run doubles which are 100% painful but 100% worth it to get out in the fresh air I’ve been missing in MN (I stayed inside almost all winter 🥶) and also support @cycleforsurvival as much as I can! ✨ Cycle for Survival raised more in 2019 than any other year — $41 million+ going toward rare cancer research at @sloankettering. 🎉W😳W! Huge thanks to all who participated or donated this year (you still can through April 1!) — you are making a positive difference in this world. ❤️ . Is anyone running the @avlmarathon or 1/2 this weekend? I’m speaking at the pre-race dinner Friday night! Come say hey or send me Asheville recs. 🤗

Little sis @abigailande is taking on the role of my handler and bodyguard (not really though - I hug everyone, plz hug me 🤗) for a couple days until @justingrunewald1 arrives while we we go on a little cycling and speaking tour. 😅 Kicked things off at the JP Morgan ride tonight at @equinox on E 44th — one ride a day through Sunday! So come say hi 🧤if you’re at any of the following events: . 👉Friday 9pm Bryant Park 👉Saturday 6pm E 43rd 👉Sunday 3pm E 43rd . Let the sunset not be my time running out but only the hour of the day. 🌅 Sarah Kay . I have a shirt with this quote on it. Corny right? It’s gray with black cursive script; you’d have to look really hard to make out what it says. But I knew, and I liked the sentiment. I wore it under a sweater in late 2017 to an appointment where I got the results back from one of my scans. My tumors grew. I haven’t worn it since. . That’s the thing about most of my scans over the last three years — they’ve almost all been bad. No exception for the one I had about two weeks ago. Tumors are growing. One in my liver kinda decided to go rogue over the last 3 months. . This time, unlike most others, I knew this scan wouldn’t be good. For maybe the first time ever, my cancer was making itself known with symptoms beyond the ones caused by surgeries, treatments, etc. It started with intense itching, scratching myself until I bled on some nights. Justin wondering aloud, “I think your eyes are more yellow than usual. I’m not sure though.” Yellow-toned skin followed the yellow eyes, and at that point we were hoping I wasn’t in acute liver failure and *just* had a biliary duct obstruction caused by a tumor. . Fortunately, that was the case. I had an ERCP procedure last week at Mayo and it seems like the stents they put in are helping my bile ducts quite a bit. Small victory! I was completely knocked down by general anesthesia for a few days but I really am feeling (& looking!) better every day. . I’ve been in San Diego since Friday. What was planned as a training trip in December has morphed into more of an I-desperately-need-sunshine pick-me-up! Turns out trying to escape your problems with a vacay is harder when your body is the problem. 2.5 weeks ago I was actually getting fit. Back to square one today with a slow 3-miler accompanied by some vague abdominal pain I hope continues to fade. 🤞🏼 . Soon I’ll be starting a new drug with some pretty harsh potential side effects, but my cancer is at the point where I don’t have many (any!?) other options. . So here we go! I can’t do everything, but I can do some things. Like enjoy this beautiful sunset. ❤️
