She was the most beautiful sea turtle I have even seen. Loggerhead #35 in rehabilitation at Marine Animal Rescue Team of @newenglandaquarium. She had beautiful light coloured skin around her eyes. She was aware, curios and ready to be released back into the ocean. Cape Cod, MA in USA has the largest annual sea turtle stranding in the world. Staff and volunteers of @massaudubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary rescue cold-stranded sea turtles and transport them to the Marine Animal Rescue Team of the New England Aquarium. Marine Animal Rescue Team specializes in rehabilitating sea turtles. They provide rewarming, rehabilitation and subsequent release back into the ocean. @ilcp_photographers#seaturtle#animalrescue#animalrehabilitation#seaturtles#endangeredspecies#endangered

So far more than 750 cold-stunned sea turtles have been rescued by @massaudubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary this year and the numbers are still growing. Happily, most of the turtles have been alive. Stranding of sea turtle happens mostly between October and January in Cape Cod, and the extreme weather plays one of the main roles in causing this phenomenon to occur. “Our work is like a life saving crew. If the turtle is alive you have to go and get it. Each turtle counts. We never leave a live turtle on the beach, no matter what the conditions are, we make the effort to go out and get it.” Robert Prescott, Director of Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, who found his first stranded Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle in 1974 and after this event he started to organize the collection of stranded stranded sea turtles. @ilcp_photographers#babygiants#seaturtle#seaturtles#animalrescue#wildliferescue

Celebrating @cristinamittermeier , the first female photojournalist to reach 1M followers on Instagram. I deeply admire Cristina’s endless energy to work for environmental issues. Her tireless efforts and her generous support for others make this planet a better place to live. I know Cristina's beautiful work for a very long time and I remember first meeting her at the opening of Paul Nicklen’s gallery in New York City. I am truly honored and grateful to be able to collaborate with her on her book "Back from the Brink: 25 Successful Conservation Stories," where she featured one of my Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle photos from my sea turtle conservation project. . Recently, her new book ‘Amaze,’ was published with her breathtaking images. If you are looking for a holiday gift, I can’t imagine a better choice than this meaningful and important book. From ocean shores to some of the most remote indigenous communities in the world, photographer Cristina Mittermeier explores humanity’s relationship with the planet and possibilities for a mindful, sustainable future. In Amaze, Cristina elicits our wonder and awe at the natural world and the labyrinth or “maze” of navigating a sustainable existence. The book combines two series: “Enoughness” and “The Water’s Edge.” . About the cover photo “Lady With The Goose”: “I photographed this Lisu woman from one of the Tibetan minorities in China, as she took her pet goose for a walk in a street market in the southwestern corner of China. The image, made with an old single reflex Yashica camera, always makes me smile.” - Cristina says. This image is part of The Water’s Edge. . #amaze#cristinamittermeier#teneues#ladywithgoose

I’ve done scuba for 16 years and done many dives around the world but this was definitely one of the most exciting ones ever. In the Giant Tank of Boston Aquarium @newenglandaquarium with Myrtle and Sherrie Floyd, former supervisor of the tank, while working on my #BabyGiants documentary about sea turtle conservation. Myrtle, a 92 years old non-releasable green sea turtle, receives her first meal of the day, salad for breakfast at 9:30am. Myrtle has lived in the aquarium since 1970. Beside documenting the daily life of Myrtle, it was so enjoyable to wave to kids on the other side of the glass. @ilcp_photographers#seaturtle#rescue#animalrescue#rehabilitation#underwater#scuba#diving#underwaterphotography

I have been documenting science expeditions of Alfred Wegener Institute for three year. AWI has just started their own Instagram account @awiexpedition where their share personal experiences, behind the scene information and of course Arctic&Antarctic science. If you are interested for our beautiful and changing polar regions please follow them on @awiexpedition ・・・ Repost: Have you ever encountered a polar bear? During Arctic expeditions we often see polar bears from a far distance and sometimes very close, like these two. These polar bears walked around our icebreaker Polarstern and we could watch them from a safe distance on board. During expedition the team grows together, you experience the other person in a way which you would not have in an other working environment. Everything works and runs like a big family, sharing work, joy and food. On this day Mads Adamsen and me shared the same idea about baking donuts for everyone. Beside taking some photos of Mads I learned how to make donuts, my very first ones. During expeditions we are extremely busy but somehow there is time for everything. Sometimes for baking as well, because what every you want to eat, you have to make it by yourself. @ilcp_photographers@awiexpedition#expedition#greenland#stationnord#arctic#arcticocean#behindthescenes#donuts#everydayeverywhere

Today my long term documentary as the cover of the @nytimes Science Times section in print. Online version of the story is in my bio. My aim and passion is to document the work of scientists that are delivering crucial information and highlighting the changes of the Arctic Ocean, the most fragile environment of our planet which is disappearing front of our eyes. So wonderful and excited to see my documentary about Arctic science of Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in The New York Times paper today. Thank you Matt McCann for the beautiful edit and layout and @henryfountain for the wonderful writing. Arctic Ocean sea ice thickness has decreased 30% over the past 17 years. Can you imagine an Arctic Ocean with no ice on it? We can experience it in our lifetime, if no positive changes happen. @ilcp_photographers@nytimes#arctic#arcticocean#seaice#icebird#expedition#science#scientist#sciencephotography#climatechange#globalwarming

I am deeply disappointed. The plan to turn a large part of Antartic Ocean into the world’s biggest sanctuary has been rejected in #CCAMLR2018 meeting in Hobart, Tasmania this week. Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources could not agree and did not back up the proposal which was prepared by Germany and proposed by EU. The 1.8m sq km reserve – five times the size of Germany and 200 times the size of Yellow Stone National Park – would have banned all fishing in a vast area of the Weddell Sea and parts of the Antarctic peninsula, safeguarding species including penguins, killer whales, leopard seals and blue whales. What can you do? Please sing the “Protect the Antarctic” petition of @greenpeace to help the to fight for the creation of the Marine Protected Area in Antarctic Ocean. @ilcp_photographers#protecttheantarctic#antarctic#antarctica#penguine#penguin#antarctic

I have documented four IceBird sea ice thickness science campaigns and I can only tell that flying on the research aircraft - built in 1942 - is truly interesting and sometimes challenging. To be able to make long distances, the weight of the airplane is kept to its minimum. The airplane has no comforts, no soundproofing and no insulation. Each survey flight lasts about 6 hours and there are no bathrooms on board! There is a bucket in the tail of the airplane, where the temperature is well below freezing. I learned to respect the importance of buckets. @ilcp_photographers#icebird#arctic#arcticocean#seaice#science#scientists#polar#airplane#climatechange#globalwarming

It is truly an honour to see one of my sea turtle rehabilitation images from my Baby Giants long-term documentary in @wwf Magazine. . Sea turtle cold stranding has started in Cape Cod, US. . Every year from October to January, Cape Cod is the site of the world’s largest recurring annual sea turtle stranding. Many juvenile turtles, unable to navigate out of the hook-shaped coast before winter, get stuck there and develop a type of hypothermia in the 50°F water. Some 82% of the sea turtles marooned in this area—known as the Deadly Bucket—are critically endangered Kemp’s ridley turtles. But thanks to rescue efforts by the @massaudubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, stranding has become a beginning rather than an end for the turtles. The Mass Audubon team takes the turtles it rescues to the @newenglandaquarium Marine Animal Rescue Team, which carefully rehabilitates the animals. Many of them recover enough to be released into the wild again. @ilcp_photographers#babygiants#seaturtle#wwf#animalrescue#rehabilitation#seaturtles

This week is very important for penguins, whales and other species feeding and living in Weddell Sea, in the Antarctic. This week ‘Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources’ with 25 members and further 11 countries discuss the proposal of the largest Marine Protected Area, which was proposed by EU and prepared by Germany. This would be the largest protected area on the planet, 200 times larger as Yellowstone National Park and 5 times bigger as Germany. The area is a very important feeding ground for whales, penguins, seals and other special. Protection of this environment is important for a healthy ecosystem and even more important to stop industrial krill finishing, which is the biggest threat for species in this area. @ilcp_photographers@greenpeace#weddellsea#greenpeace#protectantarctic#protecttheantarctic#antarctic#antarctica#penguin
