Veteran’s Day is right around the corner, so we wanted to share this amazing photo with you that we found in our Pan American World Airways records. This was the sixth graduating class of Army Air Corps cadets who enrolled in Pan Am’s aerial navigation course here at the University of Miami in 1941. The graduates included 81 U.S. pilots as well as 10 from Britain’s R.A.F. (Royal Air Force), which represented a 95% completion rate, reflecting the talent and experience of Pan Am’s instructors. Pan Am trained thousands of personnel to aid the war effort and over 200 employees’ lives were lost. As we honor our veterans this weekend, we encourage you to read more about Pan Am’s role in WWII and other military operations by visiting our new digital exhibit page “Valiant Ventures”, which we’ve posted to our Cleared to Land site. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we have digitized over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. Check back regularly as we take to the skies with Pan Am. #fabflyingFriday#UMLdigitalexhibits#PanAmericanAirways#PanAmonInstagram#VeteransDay#specialcollections#librariesofinstagram#iglibraries#ig_libraries

It's Halloween and the last week of the #SpineTingling challenge and we've had a blast alongside @pemlibrary seeing what you've all found!! (although some of these preservation accounts are a bit frightening and rather pointed (@nul_prescons and @uarkpreservation). We were inspired by Mindy Belloff's #ArtistsBook "A Golden Thread: A contemporary Illumination," 2018, that tells the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. We're a bit worried our costume wasn't quite fleshed out enough, but a book has never steered us wrong in the past. Don't mind us as we bull through the rest of these jokes 🐂. Thank you all for joining us this month! We look forward to moooving into November. ____________________________ #SpecialCollections#LibrariesOfInstagram#RareBooks#Bookstagram#wintercroft#iglibraries#ig_libraries#minotaur#theseus#halloween

It's Friday afternoon and we are trying to clean up for the weekend, but we don't want to leave you hanging, so it's nice when we have our Digital Projects Librarian on the line for a #PanAm post Pan American Airways ushered in the Jet Age in 1958 with its new fleet of jet propelled aircraft and revolutionized commercial aviation. Pan Am was eager to demonstrate just how quick its service was by competing with a local laundromat in Denmark where dry cleaning was apparently slow back in 1961 and could take more than 48 hours to get it done. Here, a shirt was flown from Copenhagen to New York City, dry cleaned and flown back to Denmark in a record 41 hours & 50 minutes! Even Amazon would be hard-pressed to compete with that. Read more about Pan Am’s impressive feats of aviation in our new digital exhibit “A Legacy Aloft”, which you can find on our Cleared to Land site. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we have digitized over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. Check back regularly as we take to the skies with Pan Am. _____________________________ #fabflyingFriday#UMLdigitalexhibits#PanAmericanAirways#PanAmonInstagram#SpecialCollections#LibrariesOfInstagram#drycleaning

We're turning over week 3 of #spinetingling (@pemlibrary) to our Mellon Conservation Fellow Laura Fedynyszyn @la.fed to share her recent spine repair: The text block in this bible dates back to 1674, but it has a Victorian binding, and has had numerous repairs done throughout its life. The leather and cords that originally held the boards to the textblock have worn so thin that one board was completely detached and the other was just barely hanging on. The original paper liner and adhesive on the spine has also degraded over the years leading to the spine becoming detached from the text block and boards as well. 01- A before treatment shot showing the spine barely attached to the board on one side, and completely separated from the top board. 02- A close up of the deteriorating leather on the tail of the spine. 03- Once the spine liner was cleaned off we found evidence of an old repair, two thin pieces of brown fabric that were perhaps an older version of the board slotting technique that we use ourselves to reattach the boards to the text block. 04- The spine cleaned off, ready for a new lining and board reattachment. 05- We use a Jeff Peachey board slotting machine to create a small groove in the board so we can introduce linen that will then serve as the attachment between the boards and the text block. 06- We found remnants of the old endbands underneath the deteriorated spine so were able to sew new endbands in the original colors. 07- New endbands, and the boards reattached to the spine using a type of conservation grade PVA glue called Jade 403. 08- A photo of the completed treatment. 09- A close up of a fill right on the tail of the spine created using Japanese paper toned with acrylic paint to compensate for an area of degraded leather. __________________________ #specialcollections#librariesofinstagram#bookstagram#rarebooks#bible#bookrepair#conservation#iglibraries ig_libraries

It was the gold stamped elephant skull that caught our eye, something about the lighting in the stacks hit just right to grab our attention for week 3 of #SpineTingling created by @pemlibrary. "Proboscidea. : A monograph of the discovery, evolution, migration and extinction of the mastodonts and elephants of the world" by Henry Fairfield Osborn, 1936-1942. This challenge has been a blast so far. Keep em coming! _________________________________ #LibrariesOfInstagram#SpecialCollections#Bookstagram#RareBooks#Elephants#iglibraries#ig_libraries

It's week 2 in the #SpineTingling challenge that we are sponsoring with @pemlibrary for October. You may not be too surprised to learn that we have quite of a few books about pirates in the Caribbean. A phrase that we still manage to say with a straight face, four years on. These particular pirate books caught our attention for the skull and crossbones anchor and for the vibrant white call numbers. These are always a reminder of library days gone by and denote books move from our general stacks or another library's. We'll admit that floating call numbers in photo do give the chills 😱. Hope the LC call number system doesn't haunt our dreams... ____________________________ #SpecialCollections#LibrariesOfInstagram#bookstagram#pirates#PiratesOfTheCaribbean#IgLibraries#ig_libraries#rarebooks

Did you know Pan American Airways did more than just fly planes? They also played a key role in helping America get into space. Pan Am’s Guided Missile Range Division, later renamed the Aerospace Services Division, was Cape Canaveral’s primary contractor to service the base from its inception in the 1950’s well into the 1980’s. We found this cool photo in our new digital collection showing a Pan Am fire truck on the Atlas launch pad in July 1959. No wonder Pan Am made an appearance in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey! You can read more about GMRD’s role in the Space Race by reading our new digital exhibit “Valiant Ventures”. With support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, we are digitizing over 60 boxes of brochures, timetables, annual reports, and publications from the Pan Am collection. It’s perhaps no coincidence that “Poltergeists ; an introduction and examination followed by chosen instances” by Sacheverell Sitwell, 1940 has appeared in several of the first #SpineTingling posts for the October challenge created by our brilliant and spooky friends @pemlibrary.@hornbakelibrary@pittarchives glad we’re all sharing the same haunting. Our Poltergeist comes courtesy of Jackie Gleason, who amassed a library of titles related to the occult and paranormal. More of his books are visible in the background and will be seen throughout the month. __________________________________ #JackieGleason#specialcollections#librariesofinstagram#bookstagram#ghosts#poltergeist#TheyreHere#publishersbinding

We are turning over the #nothiddenlabor challenge to @la.fed our Mellon Conservation Fellow to show her work on a manuscript of "Opera cum Tabulis..." This 1718 copy of a text by Virgil was penned entirely in iron gall ink with very thick iron gall ink borders. The ink on the borders has begun to corrode through the pages, making the volume difficult to handle safely. The ink that remains around the borders of the loss is incredible brittle and likely to keep flaking off it not stabilized. There are limited options for treating documents and books with iron gall ink as the introduction of excess moisture will accelerate the corrosion process. To treat these pages I use a very thin Japanese tissue called tengujo which I pre-coated with a high quality gelatin adhesive. Using only a small amount of water I can remoisten the tissue to repair the tears on the pages of this book. 1. The page being repaired 2. A corner where the ink has corroded through the paper 3. The corroded ink is causing the page to separate 4. A sheet of pre-coated repair tissue that I made 5. Measuring the length of repair tissue I need to cut 6. Remoistening my strip of repair tissue on a sponge cloth lightly dampened with water 7. Putting one of my repair strips in place using 8. The repair is dried between cotton blotters and under weights. The blotters help wick out the moisture from the repair tissue quickly so there is less chance of the moisture spreading. If my repair doesn’t dry quickly there is a greater risk of free iron ions spreading, which can cause corrosion in other locations on the page. The weights ensure that the area of the repair will dry flat and not become distorted. As well, the weights ensure that the blotters make even contact on the page so the repair tissue dries evenly. 9. The underside of my completed repair. The area where the ink has flaked off is still visible, but the page now stays together when lifted. 10. An after treatment shot of the repaired area. The Japanese tissue is incredibly strong, but also thin enough that it doesn’t detract from the aesthetics of the engraving. #SpecialCollections#LibrariesofInstagram#iglibraries

Perhaps this would've been better suited for a #MorbidMonday post, what with all the poison talk at the end of a cookbook...but it works nicely as #TuesdayTips. Whether you keep your rat poison a bit too close to your baking ingredients, or you mixed up your chemistry set ingredients, it's always good to know how to counteract poisonings. We won't make any claims to these antidotes working; maybe @scihistoryorg has some thoughts?. Thankfully "Pilot Lights Cookbook" complied by the Pilot Club of Miami, 1956 has many tasty recipes from club members. ____________________________ #Cookbooks#Poisons#Antidotes#Recipes#PilotClub#SpecialCollections#LibrariesOfInstagram#Bookstagram#RareBooks#CulinaryHistory#IgLibraries#Ig_Libraries#PortOfMiami

The first thing we thought of when we joined the #nothiddenlabor challenge was highlighting the amazing work done by our staff librarians and archivists. What we didn't expect was that almost all of the would only be willing to appear in photos if no one could really see what they look like! That said Adrian, Nicola, Yvette, and Elisiene, keep the wheels running around here. They manage researchers in the reading room, handle logistics for recalling collections from offsite, arrange and describe collections, process new acquisition invoices, set up displays for classes and tours, and always share the interesting items they come across day-to-day. The value of their work cannot be overstated, and this is a post for them (even if you can't see their faces). ______________________________ #SpecialCollections#librariesofinstagram#librariansofinstagram#archivistsofinstagram#iglibraries#ig_libraries#UMKislakCenter

One of the two compressors in our stacks HVAC unit needed to be replaced this week. Anytime there is service or we can't help but watch. It's an impressive machine and regulates the collection area to a steady 67F (20C) and 55% relative humidity. Glad to have it well maintained. ____________________________ #nothiddenlabor#specialcollections#librariesofinstagram#hvac#climatecontrol#iglibraries#ig_libraries#stacks#collectionstorage

We're so excited to announce #SpineTingling, a new @iglibraries challenge that we're sponsoring in October with @pemlibrary! Every Wednesday of the month, we're challenging libraries to show off their most spectacular, intricate, and weird book spines, as well as skeleton/spine images, and any other spine-related riffs. We hope you'll join us in highlighting that part of the book that entices us to take it off the shelf & have a peruse! Hint: the last Wednesday falls on Halloween, so keep an eye out for spooky spines! #WednesdayChallenge#bookspines#iglibraries#librariesofinstagram#bookstagram#rarebooks#iglibraries#ig_libraries

Coming off of Labor Day, our friends @utsaspeccoll@transportationlibrary@laborarchiveswa have issued the #nothiddenlabor challenge for September to highlight and celebrate all aspects of US and International labor. Our first share comes from the Pan American World Airways Inc. collection (ASM0341) from "In Focus: A Briefing for all Management" January 29, 1985. Pan Am and the Transportation Workers Union (TWU) were involved in negotiations over raises and ensuring that Pan Am honored previous agreements for pay raises. TWU called a strike on February 28, immediately after the cooling off period expired. The strike lasted through Mach 1985. _______________________________ #laborhistory#specialcollections#librariesofinstagram#bookstagram#PanAm#PanAMNHPRC#strike#TWU#iglibraries#ig_libraries
