She NEEDED an answer for her health. ▫️Pre-Plexus Carissa had babies that she could no longer breastfeed. Yes, #breastisbest but... #doublemastectomy. 🤷🏽‍♀️ She was looking for other ways to give their little immune systems the advantages her body couldn’t anymore. ▫️Pre-Plexus Carissa was still learning healthy eating behaviors after years of disordered ones. She wanted to be healthy and knew her body needed it, but she also wanted a pint of Ben & Jerry’s several nights per week. (She hadn’t learned yet that your cravings actually COME FROM your gut flora.) ▫️Pre-Plexus Carissa was scared to death to let her husband follow his dream of going to medical school, because of the financial burden it would put on the family, and the fact that it might mean leaving the babies to go work outside the home. ▫️Pre-Plexus Carissa had bought into the lie that other people’s opinions or judgments of her had any bearing whatsoever on her actual identity. HEALTHY Fat, LOW Fat, NON Fat... but the truth is - any type of fat isn’t what makes us fat 🤯 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Eating anything over your calorie budget over an extended period of time without burning it off through physical exertion or strength barring exercise is what will make you fat 🙄 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Which leads me to my next point... There are a lot of “healthy” fats. Some of which are salmon, avocados, walnuts, flax and chia seeds to name a few. All of which contain higher levels of Omega 3 fatty acids. These fats are known to be anti-inflammatory, heart healthy, and what I like to call “our glowing group”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, I personally don’t like the stigma of there being “unhealthy fats”. Also known as saturated fat from animal proteins, dairy products, egg yolks and especially red meat. Yes, these could be kept more minimal IF someone has a cholesterol, heart or arthritic/gout problem... BUT having these fats that have a higher amount of Omega 6 fatty acids is also SUPER beneficial for your health. They too place a huge roll on our hormones, satiety, and go neck-n-neck with our “glowing group”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Both Omega 3’s and 6’s hold numerous vitamins and essential nutrients that deeply control our overall health. They’re both very essential and hold an important role in our diet. Rhiannon here🙋🏻‍♀️, I had a follow up appointment yesterday with my ‘hormone’ 👨‍⚕️Dr. After two months of his protocol, changing my workouts, working on ‘chill’🧘‍♀️ less stress, trying to stay away from alcohol and sugar 🚫🍷🍦you name it...I got my blood work results. Guess what? Estrogen was even ⬇️lower and thyroid hormones are still a wreck⚠️Frustrated 🤬was my first thought. Then I had a really smart friend 🤓remind me that it didn’t take two months to get this way, it’s not going to take 2 months to repair. So we are moving forward with an adrenal test and some blood work 💉for Hashimoto antibodies. A lot of these came out well, but too dark, so I thought it was a good enough chance to mess around, since I so rarely use them. Also I'm in love with this top. Updates: A professor from University of Buffalo was here on the invitation of my PI... Who I'd taken to breakfast last time she was here on began of a different professor... 18 months ago. For those of you who aren't aware, I've only been out and transitioning medically for ~13 months... She didn't recognize me. I have a hard time figuring out what to do in these situations; I want to avoid the potential for discrimination and to be seen and treated like a woman. I also don't want to crassly bring it up at the slightest opportunity just to get it out there. I am trans, but I'm a human being first and that's far from my only attribute. But at the same time I want to be visible and I didn't come out of the closet to hide who I am. My solution this time was just to hint at it in a very heavy handed way at a vaguely appropriate time to do so ... Which is an unsatisfactory solution... But it's a hard balancing act... Another year older - another year wiser 😬 There’s something about your birthday that makes you stop and reflect. This photo was once just a dream and is a physical representation of my heart😊 . I use to try to control all outcomes thinking my way was best. But it wasn’t until I got out of the way did my life take shape far better than I ever could have planned, including my own health. I use to go to the library and just mentally ask what information I needed, allowing myself to be guided toward books. They were always the right ones! . I took this same faith-based approach when finding a job, getting Emma, meeting Tyler, where I’d live, and even what my career would turn into. . In other words I focused on how I wanted to feel and let it go! . Sometimes I still pinch myself because life doesn’t always feel real. This year I vow to keep setting my intentions and trust that things will be delivered in the way I need them, even if I can’t see it at the time. Please remind me of this message. Your Cortisol Curve! Cortisol is your “Sun”, your get up and go hormone. It is secreted by your adrenals at the first sign of light AKA Cortisol Awakening Response (if all is working accordingly that is…). Cortisol is highest at the beginning of the day and gradually drops throughout the day, it should be extremely low by bedtime, when melatonin is kicking in! Cortisol also effects your immune cells and blood sugar, when things are out of whack, we get sick, panicked, hangry and exhausted.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ -⠀ -⠀ ⠀ The solid line is the normal pattern that I just described above. Unfortunately, due to the stressful lives that we live today this pattern often gets shifted and it can leave us EXHAUSTED at 2pm and reaching for that 4th cup of coffee…. Or leaves us “wired and tired” at 11pm when we should be fast asleep.⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ By testing cortisol via saliva, we can get snapshots of your cortisol levels a 4 different times in a day and allow us to plot a graph of your cortisol pattern... we get a LOT of information from the test and is essential in determining and treating the TYPE of adrenal fatigue you may be experiencing.⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ Do you feel exhausted in the morning but wide awake at night? You may be making plenty of cortisol… but at the wrong times of the day. ⠀ ⠀ Also, cortisol plays a roll in our sex drive (along with melatonin, serotonin, dopamine, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone…. Are you starting to see how many things our hormones effect?). ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ If you work night shift, you likely have a super wonky cortisol pattern! Thankfully there are methods to actually “flip” your cortisol curve so you can better adapt to this lifestyle and allow you to feel your best at work. ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ A few tips to boost your morning cortisol…. Get sunlight IMMEDIATLEY upon waking, get outside on your porch or get a light-mimicking lamp. Also, consider adding just 5 minutes of a HIIT workout to improve the brain’s communication with the adrenals.⠀ ⠀ -⠀ ⠀ -⠀ Reaching for coffee at 2pm or can’t sleep come bed time??? Let’s have a chat!

Or no? Well if there’s a change you’ve been desiring, that feels challenging to either make happen or STAY happening - this series might be useful. ********************************************** Basic stuff done over & over helps create a sense of order over chaos. When a day suddenly spins out of control, or your hands feel like they’re off the wheel - daily behaviors can be SUCH a godsend. The little effort that follow through on any NUMBER of things can reward you w, both emotionally, physically, & mentally can honestly be astounding. Here are some of mine that ALWAYS happen: - make bed - workout - 3 huge glasses of water in AM - bulletproof coffee - USANA vitamins 2xs/day - eat 2xs/day - don’t leave home in disarray - have full massive water bottle w me - get ready for bed by 10:30/11, lights out by 11:30/12 Perhaps there are more, but those core things that happen EVERYDAY help MUCH stay on track w how I look, function & feel. When there’s a little “blerch” that comes up w resistance to follow through, I know the cost is too great & the reward too significant. When we have late nights, more alcohol, dessert, more to do, STRESS... Having those daily behaviors prevents the cart from being totally overturned. AND the last thing I’ll say, esp if you have LOADS (read too many) of obligations - you are an individual who actually NEEDS more supportive structures in your world, due to having so much focus out/on others. It’s super easy to do all for others (ahem, #MOMS!) & totally forget about us on any level - winding up doing just about ZERO for ourselves, treating ourselves poorly & feeling like crap. Taking care of you helps you to take care of others. So put some stuff in place. Stuff that makes you feel good as a result of having it there. You’re worth it. & the reinforcement of that belief will continue to color your universe as long as you keep up w your cornerstone habits+. (Rest in comments)

There is no hope for me. I’m a food addict. I admit it. What I did do—I cooked and brought food to work. Baby steps. This weekend, bigger steps will be taken. Struggles right now, 4 days before my period: bloat, constipation, cramps, cravings, seborrheic dermatitis flare, night waking. My endo isn’t ugly right now like it usually is, and that’s when I get apathetic. When I can barely walk is when I’m like “I’ve got to change or I’ll die.” Recent weird hormonal findings: my feet have become REALLY dry and scaly. Crusty feet I call them. Here’s a big one: my deodorant doesn’t work like it used to. WTH. Even Billy’s Old Spice. I showered with a tea tree body wash and scrubbed be crap out of my pits, and it really helped! If it's not fresh, it's under the skin or a healing scar....a constant neverending cycle. The only time I experienced clear skin is when I fuel off of a plant-based, gluten-free, refined sugar-free, dairy-free, meat-free diet and by watching my stress levels. After I lost weight following an ‘eat less / exercise more’ mentality, I discovered that I had totally messed up my body. I had ravenous hunger within an hour after eating. My body wanted sugar and carbs ALL THE TIME and no amount of willpower or negotiation with myself worked! In the end, I was miserable, struggling to keep the weight off while trying not to starve myself...it was a seemingly never-ending cycle. Then I found out WHY I was craving so much sugar and couldn’t seem to eat enough. It was because my hormones were totally out of whack, and had gotten that way because I’d lost weight! I discovered that I had made 4 huge mistakes on my journey to weight loss...all of which caused more cravings and hunger than ever before. I cut my calories down way too low, lower than 1500 a day. I did way too much cardio exercise. I focused on eating more so-called ‘healthy’ foods, like fruit for breakfast. I avoided one very important food group at all costs. Want to learn more? One of my favourite herbs for my maturing bad-ass women 😍who are entering into perimenopause is ashwagandha🌿. This herb is an amazing adaptogen meaning it helps women adapt to stress. It helps to gently increase testosterone levels (which fall as we age ladies and we need testosterone to make strong bones!) and it helps to calm neuroinflammation of the hippocampus in the brain🧠. What the what!😍 . Plus ashwagandha has a wonderful calming quality to it so I often recommend it in the latter part of the day away from meals. . You can take it in powder (although I'll tell ya, the stuff tastes like dirt🤮) or you can take it in capsule or tincture. Blog alert! Part 1... So I was actually diagnosed in my early 20's (now early 30's) with PCOS as I had very irregular periods, pains and general crazy mood swings (my poor boyfriend!). The doctor said there's nothing that can be done and it's most likely that getting pregnant is going to be hard, so when I'm ready to have kids and if I struggle to go see a doctor and discuss medication. I must say not the most helpful response to have in your early 20's knowing I wanted to have kids, it really put a dampener on it before I was even ready!! So fast forward about 6/7 years my then boyfriend became husband and we were ready to start making a family. We tried...and tried...and tried... For about a year. Nothing. I went to the doctor's and they suggested starting medication, which I really did not want to do, I have always hated taking medication. So then my brilliant husband did what he's amazing at and started researching what the medication actually does and learning about PCOS and how we could work around the issue ourselves. Hes great at research! Neither of us are doctors or in the medical field but knowledge is power! We learned the medication actually manages your insulin and helps regulate hormones etc. Which is totally possible with changing your diet. We also got a scan on my ovaries just to be sure what the situation was and it showed cysts all over both ovaries. This was disheartening to see but I knew I had to make changes. So for the next few months I made some major changes to my diet (which I will explore more in the future posts)... What Keeps you Balanced? Part 2 Earlier this week I posted about achieving "balance". A routine can help you create healthy habits, form consistency & less stress! I shared what Morning Routine works for me. My nighttime routine isn't as "set in stone" & has room for improvement 🙃 However, a PM routine to manage stress is imperative for your health. Less stress 👉 improved moods 👉 relax & recover 👉 improved/more sleep 👉 balanced hormone levels 👉 better health! Writing out my thoughts helps me sort through the "mental overload" & process things more effectively.  At night I journal my GWI: Gratitudes, Wins & Intentions. What I'm grateful for (could be anything) Wins: Accomplishments or positives of the day Intentions: Goals & Focuses for the next day. This could be very specific (ie food prep) or an attitude, thing or person to focus on (ie patience & humility). Some other ideas to include for a relaxing night & restful sleep: Have a bedtime for the electronics; mine is 60-90 minutes before bed. Diffuse essential oils (I love Doterra Serenity blend) Practice gentle stretching or yoga Lay on a Acupressure mat Journal, Read, Meditation, Prayer Take a bath or warm shower Brew some caffeine free tea Find a few things that you enjoy & brings a smile to your face. It doesn't have to be very long, but make a point to slow down & take care of yourself. You deserve it! I also plan everything out for the next day. I pack my gym bag, pack all my meals for work, get the coffee ready, etc. All of these things make my mornings smooth sailing! I don't stress about getting anything ready...cause it's already done 😊 What helps YOU start the day off right...and what helps you relax? #relax#selfcare#nightroutine

In October 2017 I was diagnosed with having Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS for short, I had to wait a further 3 months for an appointment with my consultant only to be told that I now have another 90 week wait to see an endocrinologist, I was also told that losing weight would help me but wasn't given any more information on how to manage my symptoms, fast forward to April 2018 and I was introduced to the Forever Living and this has been a game changer for me. Having done research on our products, I completed the C9 cleanse with great results, 10lb weigh loss and 12inches of all over. I have kept this of plus a lot more as it changed my eating habits for the better. I drink my Aloe Gel (yellow) everyday. I also take Multi Maca, I have found that this has helped me as it helps balance the hormones and can help reduce estrogen, and also helps regulate periods, (It has done this for me), it can also help increase fertility. I also take Argi + as it helps keep blood sugars under control and PCOS can cause insulin resistance. I also have to have laser treatment once a month so my face does be very red and hot after so the gelly has come in handy for calming that down.
