During my, ( let’s refer to my meltdown as a ) BLIP earlier this week my beautiful son gave me this. Amazing how intuitive children are ! It is the BFG ( big friendly giant ) from Roald Dahl. On the back it reads “A Dream is making a tiny little buzzing- humming noise ....”. During the deep dark moments it is for sure hard to see and remember the dreams we have and the goals we set ourselves in life. It all becomes a bit of a mess and a blur but this little message reminded me it is there. My dreams ( and yours ) are always there and we have a choice to focus on them and push forward or to forget and loose direction. This little gift was all I needed to be reminded of that. Don’t get me wrong the rest of the night was a blur but the next morning I was ready to face the world. No one will take my dreams away from me and my family. I believe in me and I believe in you .... even when you are down in the dark holes, you have the power to come back and create something extraordinary. Many of those symptoms were my reality for years, and they are issues I hear women complain about so often it’s as if it’s become the new normal. # Yet what’s worse than the fact that so many women are experiencing these debilitating issues is the fact that many are also choosing to do nothing about them. Or if they are, the doctors they see aren’t taking them seriously. # But let me let you in on a little secret. # You are meant to feel good. To wake up feeling rested and have consistent energy throughout the day. To digest your food well. To have a stable mood. To have painless periods. # And if you don’t, it’s a sign that something within your body is off and needs some attention. # Maybe you appear healthy on the outside so you aren’t being taken seriously. Or perhaps you’re being told, and believing, that these issues are all due to getting older. But that’s simply not the case and it doesn’t have to be your reality. # For me, many of the problems I experienced were the result of years of restrictive eating, coupled with overexercising. And whether it’s the friends I talk to in real life, or the many women who message me through my DM’s, it seems to be a similar phenomenon. Too much intense exercise, not nearly enough food to fuel it, and a resistance to making a change in fear of gaining weight. # But let me ask you this. Is that really how you want to live the rest of your life? Obsessing over your body yet not even feeling good in it? I sure hope not. # Not saying these issues are always the result of overtraining and under eating, but they can definitely be one of the causes. If any of this resonates, let this be the encouragement to start making some changes to your lifestyle and mindset. You deserve to feel your best.

These hormones mimic those naturally occurring in the body and prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus, and changing the lining of the uterus. Essentially, these methods fool your body into thinking it is already pregnant - and you can't get pregnant if you are already cookin'. Combined hormone methods include the pill, the patch, and the ring. With each of these, there is a routine of 3 weeks of hormones and 1 week off every month. During the hormone-free week, most people will experience a withdrawal bleed that is analogous to a menstrual period. Combined hormone methods create regularity in the cycle, can help with symptoms such as acne and irregular bleeding, and may reduce risks of certain reproductive cancers. The pill, patch, and ring - when used properly - have an effectiveness of about 99%. ⠀⠀ * Progestin-only: as the name suggests, this method uses the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy. It works similarly to the combined hormone methods by decreasing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the lining of the uterus. Progestin-only methods include the mini-pill and Depo-Provera, which is an intramuscular injectable administered every 12 weeks. Progestin-only methods are safe to use during breastfeeding and are less likely than combined hormones to decrease milk supply. Unlike combined hormones, the hormones from mini-pill or shot are continuous, so there is often reduced or absent bleeding. However, many people will experience irregular spotting using these methods, especially during the first few months of use. Everything about this picture is my life... my real life and it's a defining one for me. I used to have an account that was dedicated to solely yoga.. I would only post crazy poses and my family would be put out in every situation we were in to "get the perfect shot".⠀ ⠀ This... I didn't strip down to my tank top just for a picture (it's usually freezing when I take them and then I'm cold the rest of the day)... my dog ran up at the last minute and decided to body check me, knocking my legs off from being stacked, taking my focus off of my "zen (lol at that one)", showering me with kisses and showing me nothing but love and affection.⠀ ⠀ Instagram isn't about perfection and that is what it was for me. Working out, especially a combination of aerobic & resistance training, can also get rid of your cravings!! ⠀ -⠀ In a time where we tend to be overstressed, cortisol (our stress hormone), jacks up insulin (helps bring sugar/energy into cells) sometimes to the point where our cells rebel and refuse to absorb it, in which when our cells feel devoid of energy. Enter sugar/carb cravings because our brain knows those provide immediate energy. And then more insulin is released.. see the vicious cycle? Yeh.. no bueno. Exercise can make our cells more accepting of insulin/glucose, thereby lowering our desire for cravings! Yay!! I'm gonna just put things out there As I've hinted at on Instagram before. I am exploring and questioning my gender If I had to put a single label on it it would be non-binary. If I could put more than one label it's be the following Non-binary, Genderfluid, and Transmasculine. I do look to the future and think about the options to change my body such as surgery and hormones. I do think about changing my name. And I think about all this alot. I can't explain to you what these labels mean because for every person it's different. All I can say is it's feel right. My pronouns are They/Them. And I've thought about changing my name. This is the reason I've added a questionmark to end if my name everywhere. Apart from Facebook. I'd be more than happy if people who see this start calling me this asap. All I ask. Testicular burning. 🥴 Yes this is a thing in the realm of men’s #pelvicfloordysfunction and this symptom can be pretty common. Issues in the abdominal wall can be the main cause or trigger. Hernias - inguinal or sports hernias for instance - create holes in the abdominal wall where important nerves reside. Some of these nerves play a role in innervating the testicles. When they are infringed upon, burning and abnormal sensation in the testicles can occur. Tight muscles such as the Iliopsoas can also impinge on these nerves and cause burning down below. There are other causes too - have you had a vasectomy? Any other trauma to the area? Is your bladder bothering you? 😣 . . If you are feeling these symptoms, it would be beneficial to assess your lifting mechanics or what your workout is - could these activities be causing issues in your abdominal wall or the surrounding muscles and nerves ? If you’re not sure, have a pelvic floor therapist assess you!!! I was super hesitant to give these guys a go but after binging their podcast and listening to the guys talk with such passion and provide quality info I decided I didn’t have much to lose. I knew my body was struggling to balance my hormones, my sleeping was non existent, my mind was in constant over drive and I just felt generally rubbish. I can honestly say I’m sleeping like a baby and my general anxiety levels have plummeted 😎 As someone who doesn’t deal in herbals I’m always cautious as to what products are going to be best for my body but I can safely and honestly say these two are definitely going to remain part of my everyday routine. Here’s what the research says...a paper published by the endocrine society explains ‘ Chemicals in lavender and tea tree oil appear to be hormone disrupters’. Going on to say evidence to suspect a link between abnormal breast growth in young boys that have been regularly exposed to lavender or tea tree oils. Lavender and tee tree are amongst common ingredients found in soaps lotions and house hold cleaning products. However -they possess a diverse amount of endocrine disrupting chemicals and should be used with caution. An endrocrine-disrupting chemical is a chemical in the environment that interferes with hormone actions in the body. I have a new smoothie recipe in the works! This one is a chocolate cauliflower smoothie. You may be like, ummmmm.... WTF Tara: CAULIFLOWER? Yup! Not only is cauliflower an amazing veggie for women's health but you don't taste it, which is a huge bonus 👌 So in this smoothie you're getting your women's health on without having to block your nose as you chug down some gross shake. • Cruciferous veggies are a MUST for women - every - single - day. And if you have problems digesting cruciferous veggies then there's something else going on and you have to look into that - that's a symptom of an underlying issue. • Here's the recipe I did today: ⭐️1/2 C frozen cauliflower (these don't have to be organic as they're on the "clean 15" list, and 1/2 a C = 1 serve of veggies - you need 8 serves daily). ⭐️2 TBS raw cacao or a chocolate mushroom blend. This picture seemed appropriate for today topic...something that most moms suffer with....daily....stress! 🤪 • If it’s not juggling the kids, the laundry, family, household tasks, working at home or outside of the home, then the kids just love to push our buttons right??? See how far they can push us. Test us. Change up their routine.....😬. Motherhood is truly the best and hardest role. • Your stress hormone (cortisol) which is released when your body enters a state of stress. It has a big impact on your brain, your thyroid hormones, insulin/blood glucose levels and sex hormones. Stress alone can severely upset hormonal balance. It could be the reason you cannot lose weight. Why you are craving all the sugar. Why your hair is thin. Why you are so tired.... • In addition to the kids your body is placed under additional stress by over-consuming caffeine, over-exercising, long periods of dieting, and lack of sleep. • So it is important to try to take steps to lower stress levels where possible: 🔹 take leisurely walks where you can chat as you walk. 🔹practice gentle yoga/pilates 🔹practice meditation for 5 mins each day 🔹 do something that makes you happy - take a bath/shower, call a friend, read a book 🔹start a journal to download any points of stress 🔹get enough sleep when you can (see yesterday’s post) 🔹drink plenty of water and eat whole foods wherever possible - limiting sugar and salt intake in processed foods. 🔹ask for help from friends, family or a professional if you need it. • I appreciate as a mom these things may not be easy. Right now I am not on top of the world. I’m hormonal and didn’t eat properly yesterday (not in a dieting sense, I literally hadn’t eaten enough food 😫)... I’m anxious about things that I know I won’t be anxious about next week. I’m panicking about excess noise. I’m overwhelmed by tiny organisational concepts. I’m excessively stressed at the thought of washing up or laundry. I’ve lost ‘it’ - that general sense of sanity that goes missing one week of every month 😰 . . Now, this is TMI for a reason. Things like hormones, food, sleep, exercise, daylight, iron levels, etc., all play a role in your moods. They can affect how you feel - sometimes in startling ways! Why is this important? Recognising these influences allows you some control over feelings that appear “for no reason” or “without a trigger”... because if you can notice your hormonal cycle, or think back to your food/water intake, or look back on your sleep in the last week, you can see areas that may be impacting your mood. Even if you don’t change them, at least you’re aware of the influence/reason and can find some ‘order’ in your feelings. It’s not a fix, but it’s a start - and it’s certainly better than thinking you’re just defective (she says from experience!) 😜 . . It’s really scary to write this - it’s always scary to write imperfect ‘self’ pieces as a therapist - but I’m doing it to call attention to the things we often don’t pay attention to, despite their impact on how we feel. Sometimes it’s good to use an app, or a planner, to keep track of moods/sleep/food/etc - when you can see patterns you can start to make decisions and choices based on what consequences you want. You may want to get more sleep, for example, because of how you feel when you do, not just because you “should”. You may set an alarm on your phone to alert you to a hormonal (in my case, anxious) week, so you set aside some time for self-care and minimise social commitments. You may notice that how you think about yourself might begin to change! Instead of feeling-without-a-reason, awareness of these physical triggers helps you see yourself more positively 🙌 . . Hyperpigmentation v Chloasma Are you confused as to the difference between hyperpigmentation (e.g too much ☀️), and melasma (pigmentation caused by internal factors). Both can often look the same so what’s the difference? Hyperpigmentation refers to uneven darkening of the skin caused by external factors, the most common is sun exposure. When sunlight hits the skin, it triggers the production of melanin within the lower layers which travels up to the surface of the skin, resulting in what you see as dark spots or patches. These dark spots can develop in all shapes, sizes and darkness, and affects all skin types, tones and ethnicities. If not caused directly by UV rays, hyperpigmentation can develop following skin damage (think about that last spot or scratch that left a mark). In order to prevent dark spots and uneven pigmentation from developing, apply a sunscreen every morning, ideally one with an SPF30 or more. Using a daily SPF will help to prevent hyperpigmentation caused by breakouts or healed injuries from darkening. Treating dark spots and sun damage isn’t easy but as the pigment is mainly found near the surface of the skin, topical products and treatments are reliable ways to brighten and correct uneven tone. Look to introduce brightening ingredients like Vitamin C in serums, masks and moisturisers, and for more stubborn pigmentation, Retinol and melanin inhibitors such as Murad’s Rapid Age Spot Correcting Serum.
