#Repost@britishmuseum ・・・ It’s the #FirstDayOfSpring! 🌻🌷🌸💐 Artist Mary Delany created 985 of these extraordinarily detailed paper collages of flowers, and only started when she was 72! Often mistaken for watercolours, the botanically accurate works are actually made from tiny pieces of paper built up in layers – sometimes using up to 200 paper petals per flower. Each work includes the botanical and common names of the plant – this example is a Rhododendron maximum made in 1778. #MaryDelany#Delany#flowers#spring#collage#art#WHM2019#WomenArtists#SpringEquinox#💐

✨Dolores Huerta✨ Growing up, Huerta experienced a lot of racism due to her Mexican-American background. During her time working as a teacher, she noticed all of the poverty-stricken children that would come through her classroom. She co-founded a Community Services Organization chapter to combat segregation, police brutality, and discrimination as well as to work for the rights of non-U.S. citizen migrant workers. She later co-founded the United Farm Workers and now continues to work and fight for many different social issues. #whm2019

1806: Eliza (Elizabeth) Schuyler Hamilton (August 9, 1757 – November 9, 1854), the widow of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, along with several other women including Joanna Bethune, founded the Orphan Asylum Society. Eliza was appointed second directress, or vice-president. In 1821, she was named first directress, and served for twenty-seven years in this role, until she left New York in 1848 at the age of 91. By the time she left she had been with the organization continuously since its founding, a total of forty-two years. The New York Orphan Asylum Society continues to exist as a social service agency for children, today called Graham Windham. Even in her nineties, she remained dedicated to charity work, and after moving to Washington, D.C., she helped Dolley Madison and Louisa Adams raise money to build the Washington Monument. @GrahamWindham#WHM2019#WomensHistoryMonth#charities#philanthropy#historyphotographed#giving#grants#500yearsofphilanthropy#historyofgiving#supportwhatmeansmost#nptrust#givingback#charityimpact#charitablegiving history at HistoryofGiving.org

🍦🚺🍡👨🏻‍🎨🎨👨🏻‍🎨🍡🚺🍦 In 1914 Lauritz Jensen started Denmark’s first ice cream production Hellerup Flødeis together with his wife Agnes Jensen. Gunnar Nylund immortalised her at their 50 year jubilee in this 1964 stoneware sculpture - as she would have been busy at work in 1914. The sculpture has now traveled from a backyard on Finlandsvej in Århus to the restauration workshop in Vejle, where it must dry out before repair work starts. This masterpiece from the SAXBO workshop will have a permanent place of honour in the new part of the Vejen Art Museum opening in 2021. 🍦🚺🍡👨🏻‍🎨🎨👨🏻‍🎨🍡🚺🍦 #vejenkunstmuseum#art#kunst#vejenartmuseum#agnesjensen#ceramics#keramik#stoneware#stentøj#vejen#hellerupflødeis#saxbo#gunnarnylund#womeninthearts#womeninmuseums#women#kvinder#womenshistorymonth#whm2019#frisesdahl

Hulda Randall Minthorn was born to the west of Burgessville in Norwich Township
Hulda Randall Minthorn was born to the west of Burgessville in Norwich Township in 1848. Her mother, Mary Minthorn (née Wasley) was a Quaker by birth, but Hulda, her father, and her six siblings were only accepted into the Society of Friends in January 1859. . That June the Minthorn family moved to West Branch, a Quaker settlement in Iowa. During the American Civil War which began two years later Hulda helped her mother make the family's own clothes, as well as extra cloth to sell to their neighbours. . In the years following the war Hulda became a teacher, and it was while she was teaching that she met Jesse Hoover, a local blacksmith. They were married in 1870. They had three children; the second, born August 10, 1874, was named Herbert Clarke Hoover. In 1928 he was elected the 31st President of the United States of America. . In 1880 Jesse Hoover died, age 34. Hulda continued to support the family as a seamstress and as a Quaker minister. As a minister, she often travelled and spoke throughout southeastern Iowa, . In the winter of 1884, Hulda caught a cold that rapidly developed into pneumonia. She died in February at the age of 35. Her three children were separated. Herbert was sent to live with his uncle, Dr. John Minthorn, in Oregon. . . . #NorwichMuseum#Norwich#Museum#NorwichArchives#NorwichAndDistrictHistoricalSociety#Burgessville#NorwichTownship#Quaker#Quakers#QuakerHistory#SocietyofFriends#USPresidents#HerbertHoover#WomensHistoryMonth#WHM#WomensHistoryMonth2019#WHM2019#CanadianWomen#CanadianWomensHistory

March is Women’s History Month & often times we hear about the successful women
March is Women’s History Month & often times we hear about the successful women who have made great strides for women worldwide. Yet, we know that there are many women in our lives that are our hero’s and have paved the way for us. Alpha Eta Alumnae Chapter asked our very own sisters for their testimonials on women that have inspired and change their lives, we will be sharing these submissions with you throughout the month! • • Our sister, Ana Ramos (Spring 2017, #6) shares: I look up to all of the womyn in my life for the countless battles that they have fought, are fighting, and are yet to fight. Personally, I have always valued and looked up to my mom. She is a warrior, she is my confidant, and my best friend. Together we have not only struggled but also experienced great joys. There have been ups and downs but we always rose back up. My mom raised me to be the strong and resilient womyn I am today. She taught me to believe that everything happens for a reason and that our journeys are what we make of them. She migrated to the US for a better life not just for herself but for her family and daughters. That migration journey was not easy. She is the greatest person I know, besides my dad, and I could not be more proud to stem from two amazing beings. I honor her with this post to show appreciation to her and to all the womyn in our lives who inspire us to be revolutionary 💕 #WomensHERstoryMonth2019#WHM2019

#WomensHistoryMonth - - Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown was born next door to a plantation in Henderson, N.C., but moved to Cambridge, Mass., as a young girl. Her mother made sure that Brown received a good education, and a chance encounter with Alice Freeman Palmer, president of Wellesley College, resulted in her having an influential mentor. Brown eventually returned to North Carolina to open the innovative Palmer Memorial Institute, a prep school for African-American children. More than 1,000 students graduated from the Institute in Brown’s 50-year presidency. She also spoke out against Jim Crow laws. - - Located in the Gibsonville / Sedalia, NC area the school is now known as The Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum - - #WHM2019#CharlotteHawkinsBrown#Educator#SedaliaNC#GibsonvilleNC

"Now I can use my power to change my life and change the world, as I’ve learned skills that have helped me navigate my own homelessness. I’m able to tell advocates about the barriers I have faced so that we can advocate together to end discrimination against people experiencing homelessness. Today, I feel a part of something bigger than myself. I am proof that you can tell your story to people in power and make change in your community." As part of #WomenAtMK this month, we're highlighting Sheila, an advocate (and former MK advocacy fellow) with lived experience, who uses her story to uplift the voices of those experiencing homelessness and help them fight for their rights. #whm2019#womenshistorymonth#housingisahumanright

Beautiful amazing story 🤩 #youareasunflower#Repost@britishmuseum ・・・ What’s your favourite flower? 🌻 This sunflower was made by Mary Delany in the late 1700s. Delany mastered the art of imitating flowers by using tiny pieces of paper to build up these intricate ‘mosaicks’, as she called them. The artist began making the botanically accurate works at the age of 72 when she noticed the similarity between a geranium and a piece of red paper sitting on her bedside table. She went on to hone her craft and made nearly 1,000 works depicting all kinds of plants and flowers. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth we’re shining a spotlight on another accomplished member of the Bearingstar family! Kathy Piro, one of our amazing Insurance Consultants, has been with our Fairfield office for 20 years. Kathy started working in insurance when she was just 17 years old: “I have always loved the insurance industry and knew it's what I wanted to do.” Kathy offers a great example in the benefits of pushing through fear and uncertainty — when she was initially offered a position with Bearingstar, she was nervous about this new endeavor, but she quickly excelled in this role and found innovative new approaches to connect with more community members. Kathy served as the point of contact in establishing business relationships with a number of clients, eventually becoming the first producer at Bearingstar to establish an affinity program with the Connecticut Association of Realtors. “I just did it! What do I have to lose? If it doesn’t work you can go back, but you never know if you don’t try.” In her time with us, Kathy has worked with a number of organizations both in a professional capacity and as a charitable volunteer — from her work with the Home Builders and Remodeling Association (HBRA) and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) to her volunteer work with organizations like Homes for the Brave, whose mission is to help homeless veterans, the list of Kathy’s professional pursuits and charitable volunteerism is remarkable! Kathy’s work has earned her well-deserved recognition, as she’s been named both agent and producer of the year here at Bearingstar a number of times. Kathy credits the support of her previous manager Gary Adams and current Manager Tony Cervone, who consistently provides excellent guidance and leadership, as a part of her success. We asked Kathy what advice she would give to young women: “Don’t second guess yourself — if you have a hunch or desire to be something, just keep pushing” We’re lucky to have such a determined, hardworking, and kind employee like Kathy at Bearingstar.

A century
Fact Source: https://www.cawp.rutgers.edu/women-elective-office-2019 A century after the first woman to win election to the U.S. Congress, Jeannette Rankin, took her seat in the House of Representatives, women remain underrepresented in the nation’s legislature with women constituting just 19.4% of members of Congress in 2017—below the worldwide average for national governing bodies. Moreover, the importance of having women serving in Congress is still not fully appreciated or understood. In order to document women’s contributions to governing and understand how women are navigating the contemporary environment of party polarization, the Center for American Women and Politics, with generous support from Political Parity (the Hunt Alternatives Fund), embarked on a major research study of the 114th Congress. The women who served in the House and Senate in the 114th Congress (2015-16) confronted a difficult political environment in which to achieve legislative success. The 114th Congress was widely perceived to be characterized by sharp partisan divisions and legislative gridlock. Although both houses of Congress were controlled by Republicans, the Democrats maintained control of the presidency, making it difficult for either party to push through its agenda. Historically, fewer major bills are passed and enacted during presidential election years, and the second year of the two-year session witnessed a highly contentious campaign for the presidency and for control of the U.S. Senate. Today, we celebrate Jan Peterson, a shelter co-founder and activist who was appointed to the White House staff and helped facilitate the conversation between federal agencies, victims, and advocates. "I thought a White House meeting between the real experts, battered women and service providers, and federal agency personnel, could help the grassroots. We needed women on the inside and activists from the outside exerting pressure and supporting one another." -- Jan Peterson #WomensHistoryMonth#DVherstory#WHM2019 Campaign created by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

In celebration of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting the achievements of some lesser-known female leaders, entrepreneurs, and boundary breakers in the world of finance . . . Meet Abigail Adams. The wife of John Adams and the First Lady of the United States from 1797 to 1801, Adams was in charge of managing the financial affairs for her household while her husband was away serving in both the war and his presidency. She had the reputation of being a shrewd businesswoman, but it paid off – she made quite a profit by investing in government bonds (after ignoring the advice of her husband to invest in farmland instead). #womenshistorymonth#discoverherstory#womenshistorymonth2019#WHM2019#women#celebrate#history#achievements#finance#financehistory#march2019#march#womenshistory#celebratewomen#womeninfinance#womeninbanking#womenincreditunions#womeninstem#womenleaders#womenmakinghistory#fiercefemales

This week's #womenofmarkham feature is Marion Maynard Robinson. — Marion was a primary grade teacher at a Markham public school and a librarian. She helped establish the Canadian Free Library for the Blind (CFLB) that was founded in Markham by her husband, Edgar Robinson in 1906 at his residence. Marion helped Edgar build the library’s collections and learned the system of tactile printing. The library’s collections were mostly classical and popular fiction but also included biography, history, poetry, and reference books. Their collections were in several languages such as English, French, German, and Italian. After Edgar’s sudden death in 1908, Marion continued his work. The library expanded and was moved to the West Toronto Branch of the Public Library in 1911. As a librarian, Marion helped people who were blind meet each other, worked out the card index system for their use, and continued fundraising. After seven years of serving the CFLB, Marion resigned due to being offered unequal pay. She returned to teaching in 1913 and since then, she has become an advocate of equal pay for equal work. — On November 1918, the Canadian Free Library for the Blind was amalgamated with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. For more information about the Library and the Institute, you can visit their website featuring an online exhibit of the Library’s history at: http://thatallmayread.ca/ — Photo 1: M.2012.0.26, Marion Maynard Robinson c.1895, from Markham Museum archives Photo 2: Mrs. Marion Robinson packing books at her Markham, Ontario home, ca. 1908. WOW! 🗿🏗🚺👨🏻‍🎨🎨👨🏻‍🎨🚺🏗🗿 IMAGINE- a masterpiece from the SAXBO production is on its way to the Vejen Art Museum! It’s Gunnar Nylund’s more than to meters high sculpture of Agnes Jensen as she was photographed in 1914 when the tale of Hellerup Ice Cream took its beginning. In 1964 she was immortalised in stoneware and the sculpture was placed in Køge, south of Copenhagen. It has now turned up in Aarhus. FEAS has donated it to the Vejen Art Museum - THANKS! 🗿🏗🚺👨🏻‍🎨🎨👨🏻‍🎨🚺🏗🗿 #vejenkunstmuseum#art#kunst#vejenartmuseum#agnesjensen#ceramics#keramik#stoneware#stentøj#vejen#hellerupflødeis#saxbo#gunnarnylund#womeninthearts#womeninmuseums#women#kvinder#womenshistorymonth#whm2019#frisesdahl
