Big Ben first struck its chimes 160 years ago, today. Like most historic landmarks, it has a fascinating story to tell, but my favorite is how its clock stays accurate - using an old English penny. Every year the clock is adjusted. If it is running fast, a penny is added to the pendulum. If the clock is running slow, a penny is removed from the pendulum. The clock gains 2/5 of a second a day from each penny added. With time-tested (pun intended) methods like this, who needs digital technology? 🔔 🇬🇧 🕒 . . . . . #maps#pictorialmap#mapillustration#cartographer#handdrawnmap#londonhistory#londonhistoryday#illustratedmap#mapart#watercolorartist#custommap#mapdesign#cartography#maplovers#watercolormap#mapmaker#mapmaking#weddingmap#narrativepainting#ilovemaps#mapsbyamyzaleski#illustratednarrativemaps

🌿 Since it's London History Day, we thought we would celebrate with the best historic view in London, that still holds up today. Can you spot St. Paul's in the distance? In this etching, a one-legged pensioner stands by a telescope watching the river. Couples are taking a stroll, children are playing and people are having picnics. Despite this peaceful scene, London itself is large and sprawling and chimneys are visible spewing thick smoke into the air. #RoyalObservatory#ExploreGreenwich#Greenwich#London#London_enthusiast#londonist#london_city_photo#londonlife#LondonHistoryDay # london4all #londoncity#travelgram#visitgreenwich#visitlondon#discoverlondon#PrimeMeridian#Flamsteed#historicphotos#history#oldroyalnavalcollege#stpauls

It's London History Day today! To celebrate we've picked three amazing bits of history that tell the story of South West London. Swipe to see... The first photo is of the interior of a WW2 air raid shelter in Mortlake. You can visit during Open House weekend and discover what life was like for local residents during the Blitz. The second photo is of Kilmorey Mausoleum in St Margaret's. It was built in 1854 for the wife of the Earl of Kilmorey and was moved twice before the Earl settled in the area. The mausoleum even has it's own secret tunnel! Finally, the last photo shows what life was like when South West London was a hub of food production during the 19th and 20th centuries. The area was covered in market gardens that helped to feed London. You can still spot evidence of the area's history in the old fruit trees! . . . #Londonhistoryday#london#heritage#localhistory#ww2#gardens#architecture#twickenham#stmargarets#richmond#mortlake#openhouse#history

Where does the name ‘London’ come from? The short answer is we don't know. The longer answer is we don't know for sure, but people have suggested a number of possibilities... The Romans called the town Londinium, and this was passed down to the Saxons as Lundenwic, but the precise origins of the name are unclear. Geoffrey of Monmouth, a 12th-century author, attributed the founding of London to the mythical King Lud, hence ‘Kaerlud’ (or ‘the fortress of Lud’), while later writers suggested the presence of a Celtic war-leader by the name of ‘Londinos’. Neither suggestion has gained wide acceptance. It may alternatively represent a (Latin) corruption of a named British settlement existing on the banks of the Thames, or it may have derived from a native term for a particular geographical feature, such as represented today by the Welsh for a lake or pond (llyn) or the Cornish for water (lyn). Today is #LondonHistoryDay, and we marked the day exploring the lost gardens of @somersethouse 🌳🍃, bees in #Aldwych 🐝 & the history of the #Strand with the #Strandlines team, later followed by a fascinating visit to the King’s College London #archives. ⁣ ⁣ Did you know the #Strand was once home to a #menagerie and the star attraction was an eleven-foot tall #elephant called Chunee? 🐘#funfactfriday⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #fridayfact#kingscollegelondon#lifeatkings#londonhistoryday#history#strand#university#campus#london#londonhistory@strandlines_project

Here’s a hint about the latest #libertyearth#podcast airing next week .... Andy and Emily are back with a new episode! #Repost@britishmuseum with @get_repost ・・・ The nickname ‘Big Ben’ is often used for the iconic clock tower which stands at the north end of the Houses of Parliament, but it was first given to the clock’s Great Bell, which weighs over 13 tons! Today marks 160 years since the Great Clock started keeping time. The Elizabeth Tower, named after Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, was completed in 1859. This print shows how the unfinished clock tower looked in 1858, with scaffolding around the top. #LondonHistoryDay#BigBen#HousesofParliament#PalaceofWestminster#Westminster#London#LondonHistory#BritishMuseum

For London History Day 2019 step back in time to explore how London became one of the world's greatest centres of print. Begin your journey outside St Paul’s station and follow the trail marked on the map. As you come to each stop, tap the screen to hear a printer associated with that location tell their story. Discover how Wynkyn de Worde established his bookshop in St Paul’s churchyard, how Elizabeth Mallet published Britain’s first daily newspaper in 1702, and how Beatrice Warde took the Monotype Corporation by storm during the 1920s. The stories you’ll hear blend the printers’ own words with modern reimaginings of these figures, together revealing how they made London into one of the world’s great centres of print. Search for 'Journeys Through Print' in the Apple store to download. A great project as part of Being Human 2018! #londonhistoryday#history#london#secretlondon#londonlife#beinghuman#print#printinghistory#letterpress#londonstreets#walkingtour#journey#app

A portrait of an elderly man and his dog – that's a good dog! 🐶 – in front of the Cutty Sark in Greenwich, London. This image from the Historic England Archive was taken by photographer John Gay. Cutty Sark was one of the last tea clippers to be built during the 19th century and it is the only vessel in England to have been awarded Grade I listed status. An image to enjoy on #LondonHistoryDay.

To celebrate #LondonHistoryDay, we are sharing some unique images of London's people and places from the Historic England Archive. These photos show how photographer John Gay captured London's historic landmarks during the 20th century. This photo shows the morning rush hour traffic on Westminster Bridge over the River Thames, during the 1950s/early 1960s. Big Ben started keeping time on 31 May 1859, 160 years ago. "Big Ben" is the nickname of the Great Bell within the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster, but is often used to talk about the whole tower by extension.
