This is a photograph from the room where we think Anna van Gogh stayed. She came to join her brother Vincent in the summer of 1874, and writes about having a room overlooking the garden . The fireplace and all the woodwork in these modest rooms are the original, including fireplaces, mantle pieces. You can see here we filled in and left the cracked plaster hearth - we liked the sense of a story behind it! . Cute little bottle found at the weekend. I thought it was going to be aqua, so was surprised when it cleaned up clear. I love the little hand made spout in the rim and the air bubbles. I’m a bit of a bollard geek anyway, but these colourful ones in Covent Garden have tipped me over the edge! 😍 This is Floral Street, renamed in 1895 to reflect the nearby market trade in Covent Garden. Before that it was Hart Street, a name it had since at least 1638 taken from the White Hart Inn on neighbouring Long Acre. The fruit and flower market began around the 1650s and it lasted until 1974 when it moved across the river where it now sits in Nine Elms. #lookuplondon . . . . . #london#thisislondon#coventgarden#cityoflondon#rainbow#prettycitylondon#londonpride#prettylittlelondon#londonbylondoners#uncoverlondon#visitlondon#londonprivatetours#discoverlondon#explorelondon#hiddenlondon#londonguide#flroalstreet#londonwalks#historygirls#londonstreets#chasingfacades#mycolourstory#londonhistory#colourpop

The city sizzles this afternoon on the day the U.K. gets a new Prime Minister. Regent’s Park- The Park was designed by John Nash, James Burton, and Decimus Burton, while its construction was financed privately by James Burton after the Crown Estate rescinded its pledge to finance the construction. The park is Grade I listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. In the Middle Ages the land was part of the manor of Tyburn, the property of Barking Abbey. In the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Henry VIII appropriated the land, and it has been Crown property ever since, except for the period between 1649 and 1660. It was set aside as a hunting park, known as Marylebone Park, until 1649. It was then let out in small holdings for hay and dairy produce (Source: Weinreb, B. and Hibbert, C. On scorchers like today we mourn the loss of Victoria Park Lido, demolished in 1990. The Lido replaced the old bathing lakes in May 1936. It was part of a 3 year Labour plan to improve health in London, and could hold up to a thousand people. Serving as a little East London coastline, the Lido became a small beach in the midst of the busy landlocked London. Fancy a dip? This is one of those statues that cannot be photographed from many angles without access to another building or a helicopter. It’s on top of a building halfway down a narrow road. So it’s an up-the-nose shot or nothing I’m afraid. Sir Thomas Gresham (1519-1579) was a merchant who worked for #HenryVIII and acted as a financial advisor to his children - #EdwardVI,#MaryI and #ElizabethI. He is credited with saving the English pound from a financial crisis and founded the Royal Exchange. Gresham began his trading career in Holland where he also acted as an agent for Henry VIII. He quickly earned a reputation as a very skilled businessman. In 1551 he was approached by the English government to help save the pound which was falling in value on the Antwerp stock exchange (the bourse). His suggestions were so successful that Edward VI was able to pay off all his debts within a few years. Gresham went on to get involved in money and arms smuggling in the service of Mary I and was made Ambassador to the Dutch court. Political unrest eventually forced him to leave and return to England in 1567 but he continued his merchant business in London. In 1565 Gresham proposed setting up a version of Antwerp’s bourse in London. He would fund its construction if the city would provide the land. It was opened 1571 by Queen Elizabeth I who awarded the building its royal title. Gresham included shops in the design and the rental from them quickly repaid his investment. The Gresham crest features a golden #grasshopper and it also features on the weathervane of the Royal Exchange. The grasshopper also features on several other buildings in the City. Gresham’s statue is by William Behnes. It was installed in 1845 after the Royal Exchange was rebuilt following a fire. Location - Bell tower of the #RoyalExchange, Royal Exchange, EC3V 3LR #ThomasGresham#WilliamBehnes#EC3#StatuesofInstagram#Statues#publicsculpture#sculpturesofInstagram#londonart#History#londonhistory#LondonLove#London4All#londonphotographer#londonphotography#igerslondon#iglondon#Sculpture#PublicArt#Monuments#Statuephotography#History#London#LoveLondon#londongram

A striking symbol of multiculturalism and refugee history. The mosque on the corner of Fournier Street has a fascinating history. It is the only place in the country that has been the place of worship for Christians, Jews and Muslims. It was first a chapel, built in 1743 by Huguenot refugees, then it became a synagogue in 1890, before finally changing into a mosque in 1975. I spent today following a brilliant walking route outlined in David Rosenburg's 'Rebel Footprints' a book that outlines London's radical history. Gladstone Park is home to the ruins of the old Dollis Hill House, which was a farmhouse built in 1825 🏡 . A notable resident of the house was American author Mark Twain who stayed there in the summer of 1900. . The house opened to the public in 1909 and was used as a hospital during the First World War. In the Second World War, Winston Churchill's War Cabinet met there during 1941. . The house was damaged badly in two separate fires in 1995 and 1996 and remained derelict from then onwards before being demolished in 2012 and landscaped as a stabilised ruin. . . . #London#LondonWalks#Walks#LondonLife#walk#visitbritain#Walking#travelgram#travelphotography#PrettyCityLondon#prettylittlelondon#ThisIsLondon#iglondon#LondonBlogger#LondonBlog#igerslondon#travelling#blogging#londonhistory#brent#walkinguk#gladstonepark#nature#visitlondon

Today #London becomes a #nationalparkcity What does this mean? London is the the first city to sign on to a new drive to convince cities and their residents to be greener, healthier, and wilder. While London might not seem like the most obvious candidate given that it is a city of nine million – with 14,000 residents per square mile – it is worthy of its new national park status. According to mapping company Esri, Greater London’s public green space covers 16.8 per cent of the city, while there are also an estimated eight million trees in the city (Source: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/london-national-park-city-definition-green-spaces-wildlife-international-charter-a9015766.html) #cityoflondon#london_only#london4all#london_city_photo#londonguru#timeoutlondon#thisislondon#thelondonlifeinc#londoncityworld#prettylittlelondon#itssolondon#humlondon#londondisclosure#londonvisionaries#visitlondon#mysecretlondon#mydarlinglondon#igerslondon#londondecanted@exploringlondon@virtuallondon#londonbylondoners#photooftheday#ilovelondon#londonhistory#londonheritage#shut_uplondon

Kicking off the week with another quick-fire round from the Frieze of Parnassus. These ones are all sculptors and include the only two representative figures in the Frieze. Between them they are also responsible for three of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. **Egyptian - Sculpture was important to the lives of Egyptians. Monumental sculpture featured heavily in everything they built and artists were expected to copy a traditional stylised design. **Assyrian - Assyria spanned what is now Iraq, Syria and part of Iran. Its most famous sculptures were probably the huge lamassu - five legged bulls with the head of men which guarded the entrance to palaces and temples. The rest of these are all Greek: **Rhoecus - 6th century BCE. built the temple of Hera at Samos **Butades (DiButades) - c 600 BC the first to model in clay. **Bupalus - lived in the 6th century BC. Most of his work featured draped female figures. Believed to have committed suicide in a rather extreme response to some satirical poetry written about him. **Phidias c. 480 – 430 BC) Greek sculptor, painter, and architect who created the giant figure of Zeus at Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders. **Scopas (c. 395 BC – 350 BC)/ **Bryaxis - 350 BC/ **Leochanes 4th century BC - all worked on the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, another of the Seven Wonders. **Praxiteles of Athens - 4th century BC. He was the first to sculpt the nude female form in a life-size statue. **Lysippus/Lysippos - 4th century BC. Together with Scopas and Praxiteles, he is considered one of the three greatest sculptors of the Classical Greek era, **Chanes of Lindos (around 280 BC) pupil of Lysippus who created the Colossus of Rhodes, another of the Seven Wonders. These figures were sculpted by John Birnie Philip. Finished in 1872. Location - West side of the #AlbertMemorial.#KensingtonGardens.#W2 2UH #JohnBirniePhilip#StatuesofInstagram#Statues#publicsculpture ##sculpturesofInstagram#londonart#History#londonhistory#LondonLove#London4All#londonphotography#igerslondon#iglondon#Sculpture#PublicArt#Monuments#Statuephotography#History#London#LoveLondon#igerslondon

Overground #hoxton Hogesdon" is first recorded in the Domesday Book, meaning an Anglo-Saxon farm (or "fortified enclosure") belonging to Hoch, or Hocq. Little is recorded of the origins of the settlement, though there was Roman activity around Ermine Street, which ran to the east of the area from the 1st century. In medieval times, Hoxton formed a rural part of Shoreditch parish. It achieved independent ecclesiastical status in 1826 with the founding of its own parish church dedicated to St John the Baptist, though civil jurisdiction was still invested in the Shoreditch vestry. Mondays on this line can be heaving at the best of times. It is most popular lines on the tube network. So when it’s empty, which is very rare, it’s worth clicking. The numbers are staggering 😁 The Victoria line is a deep-level line and has always been operated using automatic train operation, but all trains carry drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock is currently serving the line, which replaced the old 1967 Tube Stock trains. There are 16 stations on the route; all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Underground lines or National Rail services. It is used by 200 million passengers each year and is the most intensively used line on the Underground. #cityoflondon#london_only#london4all#london_city_photo#londonguru#timeoutlondon#thisislondon#thelondonlifeinc#londoncityworld#prettylittlelondon#itssolondon#humlondon#londondisclosure#londonvisionaries#visitlondon#mysecretlondon#mydarlinglondon#igerslondon#londondecanted@exploringlondon@virtuallondon#londonbylondoners#photooftheday#ilovelondon#londonhistory#londonheritage#shut_uplondon

Any one currently in London interested in being a beta-tester? 🤳🏼 🤳🏼 🤳🏼 Oh, and this super-helpful diorama can be found in the undercroft museum of an incredible church on Tower Hill called All Hallows. Another car free Sunday on Regent Street 🎉 It’s such a spectacular street if you look up past the standard high street shops 🛍 This building used to be the Dickins and Jones department store, which moved to the new Regent Street in 1835, and into this building in 1922 📦 With a strong tradition for fabrics, and silk in particular, Dickins and Jones was prepared for a white fabric sale when Queen Victoria died; they dyed most of the stock black so customers could buy it for mourning wear 🧵 The shop survived a remarkably long time, considering trends moved away from department stores, but eventually closed in 2005 ⏱ . . . #londonhistory#londontrivia#regentstreet#dickinsandjones#londondepartmentstores#londonbylondoners#londonshopping#summerstreets#w1#thisislondon

Next (still on day 2) we went to the #TowerofLondon and even though we only had about 2-hours it was still worth it! But adding on to our need to come back, I want to come spend an entire day here next time! #Beefeater#CrownJewels (no pics allowed of those!) #LondonHistory

We only had time to just walk by #WestminsterAbbey and I’m already planning another trip back to London so we can see inside 🤩 For now, here is the outside of this gorgeous historic church built between 1200-1400 #LondonHistory#HistoricPlaces

Since it’s Sunday I’ve picked an ecclesiatical subject The Austin Friar remembers the Augustinian Friary based in the City of London (just northeast of where the Bank of England is now). It was founded sometime in the 1260s by Humphrey de Bohun the Constable of England in his return from the crusades. By 1350 the Friary covered 5.5 acres and was a popular recipient for donations and bequests from the aristocracy which didn’t hurt their expansion plans. At its peak the Friary was the largest Augustinian community in England. It had a church, two cloisters, a cemetery, and even its own prison. Its church was huge; only 2 metres shorter than Canterbury Cathedral. The Friary also owned plenty of houses which it leased to secular tenants including Thomas Cromwell and the Dutch philosopher and theologian Erasmus (who did a runner without paying his bill). Ironically Thomas Cromwell was responsible for the Friary’s downfall. He began the English Reformation movement which led to the dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, including the Austin Friary. Its land was sold off and in 1550 part of the church was given over to the London Dutch community for their own religious services. This figure of a friar is set into the wall of Austin Friars House which stands on the site of the Friary’s cemetery. I’ve used a wider shot since some over privileged city boy with a sharpie has seen fit to give the eyes pupils which is rather creepy in close up. I haven’t found any information about the sculptor but “T. Metcalfe 1989” is inscribed on the figure’s base. Location: Austin Friars House, 2-6 Austin Friars, EC2N 2HD #AustinFriars#ThomasCromwell#Religion#EnglishReformation#TMetcalfe#StatuesofInstagram#statuesunday#Statues#Statue#publicsculpture#statuary#sculpturesofInstagram#londonart#History#londonhistory#LondonLove#London4All#londonphotographer#londonphotography#igerslondon#iglondon#Sculpture#PublicArt#Monuments#Statuephotography#History#London#LoveLondon#londongram#igerslondon

A wonderful day spent in #shoreditch with @claireallen19 and @lifeofcharlouise stuffing our faces at the @courthousehotelshoreditch high tea. This building was amazing, it was once a high court. This picture was of what used to be the holding cells where prisoners were kept before they stood trial. I love London for these reasons, so much history embedded into daily life. #londonhistory#travel#livingmybestlife#travelgram#tourism#instagood#instalife#instapassport#picoftheday#expat#ilovetravel#gatewaytotheuk#slimmingworldjourney#writetotravel #instatravelling#wanderlust#englishliving#travelling#lovewhatyoudo#traveltheworld#traveladdict#londonuk#travelblog#couplesthattravel#welovetotravel#livingabroad#londonliving
