Yesterday was the last day of critical training for the crews here in AK, a milestone marked by the hotshot party last night. Pictured, Devenere and Alexakis were racing to eat MREs, a segment of the relay race in the hotshot games. Much more important though, Chena won the big flip (we’re first out to a fire over the Suns) and tug of war (bragging rights for the year)

For Earth Day, here’s pic from a couple summers ago in southwest Oregon on a fire assignment. I would get up early and run from helibase to a waterfall a couple miles away to go swim in the snowmelt before briefing every morning. It’s memories like these that impress how spectacular this planet really is. But sadly I never would have been there if it wasn’t for the unusually-extreme fire behavior in the high cascades at the time, almost assuredly a consequence of human-caused climate change

The excitement for fire season hit me pretty hard yesterday morning (I’ll be in Alaska at the end of this month!), and then I ran into people from three other hotshot crews throughout the day. I’m not too sure what to take from that.... just call it serendipity I suppose. . This was from the Hill Top Fire in central Utah last summer with Logan Hotshots pictured

Not bringing my camera with me on this trip was sensible—I had no more room in my bike bags—but now I’m going a little nuts not having it. Here are a couple from last year’s failed bike trip in NM, sunset and some creepy old church. On the side of the church was this great Spanish ad for accepting Jesus next to directions to the lowrider museum around the corner. I took a film picture thinking it would be the best shot of the roll, but it was expired film so it was overly sensitive and didn’t turn out. In fact, half the roll was unsalvageable, but the rest were like this, where the scans, with a heavy hand in Lightroom, brought them back close enough to reality. I think I like them that way

Last winter I visited Acoma Pueblo, NM but dipped out of the tour to shoot a bit of film of the shadowy adobe, metal chimneys, and stairs over wood piles. It’s a tiny mesa where an old native town covers the whole of it, edge to edge. And fun fact: it’s the oldest continuously inhabited place in the states (other than maybe Taos). . I’m hesitant to tag interesting/scenic spots anymore because over-visitation kinda ruins places... yelp reviews have a real ability to dissolve mystique. But it’s a history that more people should know, and it’s good to see a native community making a decent living off something other than gambling. So this is basically just me saying that you should visit if you’re ever in New Mexico. . (An art museum that I was at today mentioned Acoma so I was thinking back on it and realized I only posted a pic or two from the roll.)

I put a collection together of my favorite pictures that I took this past fire season and did a short write up and captioned some photos to add context. The link is in my bio, but I think it’s best seen on a full-size computer. I hope you like. I enjoyed putting it together at least (Notice the people on the ridge right center for scale)

I was going through my photo library and saw that I took this photo two years ago today. During my bikepacking trip around Uganda, I took a rest day in the crater lakes region and sat and watched this guy fish with a handmade net and raft of bundled reeds. They said that there were huge fish in the lake, but this guy wasn’t so lucky. The following day I got back on the bike and made it all the way to Queen Elizabeth National Park because it was almost entirely downhill the whole day. I somehow broke my derailleur though and couldn’t fix it myself so I limped it into Kasese, where the best I could find was a motorcycle mechanic who didn’t speak English. I couldn’t believe it but he actually got it working again with some not-quite OEM screws, and after conversion, parts and labor came out to $1.40. I love all the skiing I’ve been doing, but I can’t wait to get back on two pedals #natgeo100contest

I took a job earlier this week with Chena Hotshots out of Fairbanks, Alaska for this upcoming fire season, which I’m stoked on! It’s a bummer to not be going back to @saltlakehelitack again, but I figure it’s a good time in my life to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself as much as possible. A hotshot season in Alaska will be one big, bug-bitten, trench-footed adventure, but I’m really excited for it! I’ll be moving to Alaska in late April to start work. We’ll fight fires in rural AK for a few months, camping out in the woods for a few weeks at a time and getting food drops. After fire activity up there settles down, we’ll fly down to Boise and travel around the lower 48, going from big fire to big fire through October. This is a picture from the first day of the dollar ridge fire east of Park City this past summer

Thanks @jesse_b_nesse for organizing another great backcountry hut trip! The first photo is from this year’s trip in the Gore Range, while the second is from last year’s trip in the Elk Mountains (basically think Vail and Aspen respectively). It’s such an interesting, talented group of people on these trips, and I’m grateful to be invited along

It’s been a great week getting out skiing finally! Thanks @apetey31 for the lodging and @ian.elfers for showing us around the mountain. When it’s particularly cold out the autofocus refuses to work. And manual focus with a fast moving object isn’t so easy as you can see
