Ho Ho Ho, it’s time for the Christmas tree! In the UK we buy millions of them every year, both real and fake, but what exactly is the carbon footprint of the biggest decoration you’re likely to put up over the Yule Tide period? Real trees can take up to 12 years to grow to the standard 4-7ft size and in that time they’ll do all things good for the environment, like taking in carbon and nitrogen 👍🏼 However, once Christmas is over the ‘real’ tree’s carbon footprint does a 180° & it all depends on how we dispose of it... the Carbon Trust has calculated if we take our trees to landfill the carbon emitted from a 2-metre tall tree equals nearly 16kg because of the gases released as it decomposes (that’s the same as producing 32 plastic bottles, manufacturing one smartphone or driving about 100km in the average car). Plus, although real trees are grown as a crop they still provide a habitat for wildlife & by chopping it down you destroy that environment. However, even with this footprint, real trees can still be more friendly for the environment than a fake tree as they store carbon whilst they grow. A fake tree would need to be kept for at least 10 years to offset the oils used in production and transportation. WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN. We’re not going to tell you not to get a tree at all - but the best option, and the one we’ll be going for, is to get a potted living tree that can be used, enjoyed and loved year after year - 🎄🌲🎄🌲 Bon Noël everyone & remember to keep it sustainable when dressing the tree too! #sustainableliving#sustainablechristmas#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecochristmastree#beconservationwise#livebetter#christmastree#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#consciouschristmas#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#homelife#ecochristmas#ecolivingtips#ecofriendly

We need your help! ConservationWise has entered the Wildlife Blogger of the Year Award. Will you vote for us? Entry #46! ✨ Rewind a few months: We had the pleasure of brainstorming some ideas with Nick Askew and Kristi Foster as they prepped to launch their new ecotourism advice platform Terra Incognita @terincogeco. If you haven’t heard of it yet and are an avid explorer or nature nerd we highly recommend looking it up. 🌎 Not all eco tourism operators are created equal and Nick and Kristi use their field experience and connections to find the real deal so you can travel safe and enjoy the knowledge you’re really contributing to a good thing. Nick set up Conservation Careers and works at BirdLife and Kristi runs the Crees volunteer camp in the Peruvian Amazon - so they’re quite the duo! They ran this competition to raise awareness of the important work they are doing and we’re super happy to be a part of it - this is where you come in! Although entries are now closed you still have until Dec 28th to vote... and @conservationwise is #46 - you know what to do! Head to our Facebook page, Terra Incognita website or our twitter page for the link to vote. Ps. Our entry is all about a recent top wildlife moment: The Elephant Gathering in Sri Lanka last year. A dream day and the responsibility and potential to safeguard it into the future. NEW BLOG ALERT 🦌⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Alex has continued his Autumn series (yes we’re mid Winter but give us a minute will ya) and gives a ‘tell all’ about one of Scotland’s Big 5, the iconic Red deer. Did you know that not only are Red deer one of the biggest tourist draws here 🤑 but they may also be wild Scotland’s biggest enemy? Read more to find out. What. A. Week. See our stories for all the juicy goss but to sum it up - WOWZERS. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This week felt like our first launch into the universe. Presentations at media launches, panel events, photo shoots... a little out of our comfort zone to say the least! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’re *just* conservation biologists, a passionate pair who love exploring the natural world; sharing what it has to offer and how we can safeguard it into the future. Building that love into a business is a terrifying and thrilling experience. But the world depends on us and likeminded individuals communicating that message. There’s no time for second guessing! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’ve been massively helped by the @google#digitalgarage who’ve enabled us to develop an online presence. The internet gives us ALL a global reach, if you too have a story to tell but struggle to reach the platform you’re aiming for... search for your local GDG. They’re great and it’s FREE. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re informed, it’s your responsibility to share. In the simplest terms, people do what their friends and family do. Communicate widely, adjust habits and change the world. Simple. Join us and #beconservationwise 💪 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sustainableliving#greenteam#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecofriendly#myyet#livebetter#takeaction#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#greenlivingtip#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#entrepreneurlife#couplegoal#ecolivingtips#ecofriendly

Isn’t this OTTERly adorable! Not even a bit sorry 🤣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Perhaps one of my worst wildlife photos (I had the wrong lens on my camera), but right up there with one of my favourite wildlife experiences. This otter was absolutely loving life along the shores of Loch Erisort on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Finding Ravenspoint Cafe on the penultimate day of our trip was an actual miracle. We'd been looking out for otters the entire week and although seen plenty of signs of their existence but had yet to spot the creatures themselves. I could barely contain my squeals when we saw this guy (or girl!) hunting along the shore line.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Comment your favourite wildlife sighting below!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #beconservationwise#beconservationwise#conservation#conservationtravel#wildlife_vision#wildlife_shots#wildlifeconservation#animalplanet#endangeredspecies#naturalworld#blueplanet#davidattenborough#wild#wildphotography#wildaboutnature#wildaboutwildlife#exploremore#explorenature#theearthoutdoors#outdoorphotography#naturephotography#wildlife_photography#scotland#scottishwildlife#beautifulearth#sustainability#ethicaltraveler#ecotourism#ecoholiday#ecoadventure

Bonobos, chimpanzees, Eastern gorillas, Western gorillas, Bornean orangutans, Sumatran orangutans, Tapanuli Orangutan. There are four types, seven species, thirteen subspecies of nonhuman great ape. A much more diverse group than we could ever have imagined and we’re still learning so much about them. The Tapanuli Orangutan was only discovered last year! Great apes have been in the news a fair bit lately. Both negatively when discussing the plight of orangutans and palm oil but also positively - mountain gorillas have just been reclassified from Critically Endangered to Endangered. These species are our closest relatives, let’s build on this energy to become better informed not only about palm oil and orangutans but also coltan in mobile phones that devastates gorilla habitat or widespread logging that threatens chimps. 🦍 #greatape#greatapes#beconservationwise#grasp#greatapeconservation#gorillas#chimpanzee#criticallyendangered#savetheorangutans#palmoil#coltanmining#endangeredspecies#savethegreatapes#mountaingorilla#weekendvibes#conservation#didyouknow#sustainablepalmoil#nopalmoil#conservationwise#sustainableliving#tarongazoo#savetheworld#noplanetb#saturdays

Our first golden eagle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Raptors in Scotland have made quite the name for themselves as both the heroes and the villains of the story. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First you have historic persecution of (pretty much all) grouse and game predators which has decimated the populations of birds of prey to the point of extinction. But then the species enthusiasts and tourists in pursuit of these top of the chain species bringing in tens of millions of pounds every year. The sea eagles reintroduced to the Isle of Mull for example have established an entire industry! Humans are weird. Not to mention short sighted. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We’re infamous for our destruction, or at the very least modification, of natural systems. Today try to learn the chain reaction of just one of your decisions - for example what you’ll be having for lunch. Did you know some Scottish fish farmers are expanding to include osprey hides and photo opportunities as a revenue stream? Rather than removing a species that has historically been thought of having a detrimental effect on business, it’s now opened up an entirely new market. Did you think you were contributing to the survival of an iconic bird of prey species when you picked up your salmon? Look into where your lunch contents are coming from and get the wider picture. Consider today’s homework as set! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let us know what you find in the comments below! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sustainableliving#greenteam#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecofriendly#beconservationwise#livebetter#takeaction#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#greenlivingtip#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#homelife#homesweethome#ecolivingtips#ecofriendly

Can we clear something up? Palm oil is not the problem! It is a super efficient crop. It is the PROCESS not the PRODUCT that is responsible for the destruction we’re all finally up in arms about. Boycotting palm oil will NOT solve the problem - it will actually make it much worse. Palm oil is up to 40x more efficient than alternative vegetable oils (soy, coconut, rapeseed etc.) so refusing to use it will only require further land conversion. Sustainable palm oil is the answer. Yes, it’s true right now the sustainable options aren’t always available but THATS exactly what we should be fighting for. Look out for RSPO certified products and support brands who use it. Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s only use sustainable PO in their own brand products, these are supermarkets we should be shopping at. We’re so excited to see such widespread discussion and energy around an environmental campaign but it really does reinforce the need for facts and clear messaging. Help us spread the word, like and share this post today. #beconservationwise#palmoil#sustainablepalmoil#sustainable#rantang#iceland#nopalmoil#palmoilfree#saynotopalmoil#sayyestosustainability#orangutans#gogreen#beinformed#throwbackthursday#rainforest#deforestation#consciousconsumer#consciousliving

It's been a busy few weeks all round hasn't it!? ...A lot of milestone reports being published including the IPCC's review on the pace and safe limits of climate change and the rapid decline of global species populations from WWF. Not to mention the damning article of our beloved Sir Dave ahead of his new series 'Dynasties' (who watched last night!?) he warned against being alarmist in the fight for sustainability and conservation. Yikes. A lot to think about. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This photo shows the Callanish stone circles on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It's older (like 5000 years kinda older) than Stonehenge and although its exact purpose can only be guessed at, it without doubt insinuates a deep level connection between the human population and their environment. That same connection may well be buried deep, deep down in the modern Homo sapien but it is for sure still there - we just need to find it again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We always have been and always will be a part of Nature. Forgetting that small fact can only bring harm to ourselves. Throwing caution, and Dave's words, to the wind... carrying on this path will bring about our own extinction. Take that for being alarmist! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sustainableliving#greenteam#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecofriendly#beconservationwise#livebetter#takeaction#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#greenlivingtip#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#homelife#homesweethome#ecolivingtips#ecofriendly

70% of land in the UK is farmed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you take a look at the landscape out of a plane window that figure isn't so surprising. Last month we went to a talk by @Chris.Packham and one of the pearls of wisdom he left us with went something like this... 'one of the best things you can do to protect the environment is get to know your local farmer.' ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Farmers are responsible for well over two thirds of UK countryside and understanding the hows and whys farmers manage the land the way they do is crucial when trying to safeguard the environment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What do you think? At first glance it looks idyllic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On closer inspection the harsh edges of the tree line on the hillside, the limited fish species in the lake (nowadays pretty much just pike) and the slow return of iconic species indicate a disturbed ecosystem undergoing change... hopefully in the right direction! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Click the link in our bio to read part one of Alex's rewilding journey! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sustainableliving#greenteam#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecofriendly#beconservationwise#livebetter#takeaction#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#greenlivingtip#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#homelife#homesweethome#ecolivingtips#cairngorms#cairngormsnationalpark#scotlandexplore#scotlandrewilding#scotlandbigpicture#rewilding#rewildingeurope#wildwilderness#ecoblogger

This is a beach like no other. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Loch Morlich is an inland freshwater loch fringed by sandy shores and ancient forests in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. Not to mention it is the highest beach in Britain! Walking into it at golden hour was really something. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Cairngorms is the largest of the 15 National Parks in the UK covering over 4500 square kilometres. Over the last few years NPs have really picked up their game and advertised their accessibility. Outside is my happy place. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Wild spaces, wild creatures and wild adventures! My love for nature and passion to preserve it keep me busy. Exploring unbeaten paths as often as possible and advocating on its behalf whenever I’m not. Whether it’s watching whales in the wild (which this beautiful beach is famous for!) or feeling proud when I convert another individual to a reusable bag/cutlery set/mug it’s all connected. If you love the outdoors - whether it’s the remote and risky type or the view of your own back garden - you MUST complete the circle and stand up for it and protect it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Being aware of your choices and choosing to consume consciously is your responsibility. Exploring Scotland conjures ideas of vast wilderness, pristine environment and untouched landscape. In reality that is far from the truth although it isn't always apparent at first sight. Scotland, just like the rest of the British Isles, was deforested centuries ago, eradicating entire ecosystems and changing Nature at its core. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Read Alex's latest musings (and find out more about his 9-5 job!) about how a day out in the field hammered home the true meaning of 'wilderness' and how modern day rewilding experts are looking at turning back time... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sustainableliving#greenteam#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecofriendly#beconservationwise#livebetter#takeaction#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#greenlivingtip#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#homelife#homesweethome#ecolivingtips#scotland#rewilding#rewildingscotland#scotlandthebigpicture#wildlife_vision#scotland_insta#naturalbeauty#explore#explorescotland

Perspective 👀 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's likely that you, like us, surround yourself with likeminded people who have similar if not the same interests that you do. It can be refreshing (not to mention terrifying) to get out of that bubble and immerse yourself in someone else's 'everyday'. A lot can change depending on the angle you look at something. The cheap, convenient and pristine products we see hung on rails in every size or stacked on shelves in their dozens often have a hidden cost that when you learn about it is hard to ignore. As conservationists (and irrepressible optimists!) we find that reaching out of our circle is the best way to reality check ourselves and learn how best to communicate a message. Seeing how people who don't think like us, do think and why is an important perspective to understand. We're faced with global battles of Climate Change, Pollution and Biodiversity Loss, and we only stand a chance of winning if we tackle them en masse. Don't berate people for having different opinions but #beconservationwise and inform, inspire and instigate behavioural change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #sustainableliving#greenteam#livegreen#noplanetb#fortheplanet#sustainability#ecofriendly#livebetter#takeaction#savetheplanet#oneplanetonefuture#greenlivingtips#greenlivingtip#plasticfreeliving#plasticfreejuly#ecolivingtips#travelconservationwise#travelguide#travelbetter#ecotravel#greentravel#roam247#roamtheplanet#exploretocreate#welivetoexplore#lifelivedbeautifully#sustainabletravel#gogreen
