A morning in Oxford // A tired-feet evening, quick morning hunting for Oxford University hoodies & a mad dash to catch the train simply wasn’t enough to take in all the beauty of Oxford. The architecture is simply amazing! Hopefully I can return one day for a slightly longer stay. #charlandzaansbritishadventure#charlddp21daychallenge Day 9: 25 May 2017

Queen Anne at Blenheim // I wish I could tell you the story behind this statue of Queen Anne as well as our animated tour guide at @blenheimpalace, but you’ll have to settle for a quote from Wikipedia: “Marlborough's wife was by all accounts a cantankerous woman, though capable of great charm. She had befriended the young Princess Anne and later, when the princess became Queen, the Duchess of Marlborough, as Her Majesty's Mistress of the Robes, exerted great influence over the Queen on both personal and political levels. The relationship between Queen and Duchess later became strained and fraught, and following their final quarrel in 1711, the money for the construction of Blenheim ceased.” Apparently after the Queen’s death the Duchess regretted how things played out and tried to rewrite history by having this sculpture placed in the library - which by the way spans the whole length of one of the palace wings, an impressive 55m! I gather it neither honestly reflects their relationship, nor the Queen’s likeness. An entertaining story, yes, but none of us really knew these people so do we have any right to comment on the struggles they faced? It makes me wonder what people will say about me after I’m gone. #charlandzaansbritishadventure#charlddp21daychallenge Day 8: 24 May 2017

Downton Abbey Village // While exploring @the_cotswolds we took a bit of a detour to visit Bampton, where many of the village scenes in the series were filmed. We basically only recognised the church, Cousin Isobel’s home right next door (behind the tree @zaanpienaar is looking at) and the hospital, which is actually located in the library right next door to that. Who’s excited about the @downtonabbey_official movie releasing in September? I still have to watch the final season before then. No spoilers please! 😜 #charlandzaansbritishadventure#charlddp21daychallenge Day 7: 23 May 2017, Bampton Village

Swiss English cottages // Ilam is home to probably no more than 15 houses, but all modeled after picturesque Swiss chalets. The village is also home to Ilam Hall, a majestic estate now used as a youth hostel, and a beautiful little chapel. Surrounded by rolling sheep-filled hills and not too far from Dovedale, a much loved hiking route, Ilam is a must see in the @peakdistrictnationalpark.#charlddp21daychallenge Day 5: 21 May 2017 #charlandzaansbritishadventure

Chatsworth in the rain // I could easily post 100 photos from @chatsworthofficial. It was this magnificent estate that drew us to the @peakdistrictnationalpark in the first place and I don’t regret a minute. The garden alone is already worth spending almost an entire day getting lost in. Ok, I might have one regret: @chatswoof wasn’t there yet when we visited this extraordinary place. #charlandzaansbritishadventure#charlddp21daychallenge Day 4: 20 May 2017

English countryside sunset strolls // After our dear friends Jonathan & @peculiarbev’s wedding (happy anniversary guys!) we made our way to our farmhouse Airbnb and just started exploring the @peak.district countryside. A sign reading “Tissington Hall” looked interesting and drew us to this quaint little town. We braved the “Beware of the bull” sign and followed one of the countless wooden signposted public footpaths in this part of the world through a field filled with tiny yellow flowers. The English countryside is generally picturesque, but when you’re overlooking a little town like this during sunset it becomes practically story-like. Especially if there’s the off chance of being chased by an invisible bull. #charlandzaansbritishadventure#charlddp21daychallenge 19 May 2017, Tissington

A view fit for a king // On the second day of #charlandzaansbritishadventure we had such fun exploring @warwickcastleofficial. Walking along the castle walls this view immediately captured our hearts. After spending most of the day in and out of the fascinating castle, it was the humble little Mill Garden next door that ended up being one of our favourite memories from Warwick. There’s much more to show from our first English garden, but those photos are for another day. #charlddp21daychallenge The Mill Garden, Warwick, 18 May 2017

#charlandzaansbritishadventure recap // Two years ago today, I embarked on a grand adventure with one of my very favourite people. @zaanpienaar & I got to see and experience so many marvelous things in England & Ireland! At the time I was almost halfway through my #charlddpphotoaday challenge - editing & posting a photo every day for a whole year (you can read more about it at the link in my bio). I’m still not sure how I kept it up throughout this trip, but it was a great boost for my creativity & and unforgettable lesson in self-discipline. And since I could do with more of both, I’ve decided to set myself another little challenge: 21 days of daily recaps from our trip. Each day I have to pick a favourite photo or moment from that day two years ago to edit & share. I’m excited to relive this trip & hope you will enjoy the journey with me! Here’s our first sighting of a famous British red telephone booth in Warwick. What the photo doesn’t show: The horrific smell inside! 😝😂 #charlddp21daychallenge Day 1: Warwick, 17 May 2017

Memories of Paris // Thanks @kleinjoostenberg Deli for keeping my Parisian memories alive while I practice a bit of food photography - your French pastries are way too tempting! I know it looks like a good old South African melktert (milk tart), but did you know many countries have their own twist on a kind of custard tart? Like the Portuguese have Pasteis de Nata and we have melktert, the French have Flan Parisien. The watercolour is from a very talented street painter we met at Place des Vosges - the oldest planned square in Paris. Collecting pictures on travels is always very special to me! Wow, that turned into a history lesson quickly. #LCWinEurope (souvenir edition)

Notre Dame 😰 // “Go see the cherry blossoms next to the Notre Dame before they’re gone,” I told a friend visiting Paris just this morning. How things can change in a moment. I cannot believe it was just a month ago, almost to the day, that I was strolling on the banks of the Seine admiring the beauty of this famous cathedral on a brisk winters day. We loved the feel of the area so much we went back a few days later and sat on the benches under those trees, which have since exploded with pink blossoms. I felt a bit jealous of this friend who gets to see the blooms this week, while we were too early. But without planning to, we walked into the cathedral on that second visit. The queue was short and it was free, so we might as well do the touristy thing. Inside we were mesmerised by the gigantic stained glass windows and beautiful art portraying Jesus’ journey to the cross and beyond. We had an experience which is now impossible. For me a sobering reminder to embrace every moment and cherish special memories. Paris, my heart breaks for you. #NotreDame#parisjetaime#LCWinEurope

First taste of Normandie // I just came back from a wonderful time traveling with my mom @lapoplap and sister @wikjedupreez. What a blessing to make memories with family! We dreamed up a trip to Paris, Normandie, a quick stop in Belgium, Holland and all the way to Amsterdam. Our first stop in Normandie was Fécamp, just for a few quick photos of the @palaisbenedictine, but who could resist this charming building across the street, perfectly framed by pink blossoms? Our whole trip was basically a #wikjeandbuildings photo mission! 😜 #LCWinEurope

Hello from a new perspective // I suppose not many people would believe me if I said this photo was taken in Sandbaai, just outside Hermanus. I was so surprised by how bright the water is from above! After posting a photo every day for a year in 2017 I ran out of steam a bit and shared only 15 photos last year. 🙈 It’s definitely time for something new! Up to now my Instagram has been only iPhone photos and for 2019 I’m excited to start sharing more shots from my other cameras, including this little flying wonder machine that puts a whole new spin on everything. 🤩
