National Geographic Travel (@natgeotravel) — It’s a big world. Explore it through the lens of our photographers.
Photo by @jessmandia // A waterfall along a trail in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. A common sight after a heavy rain during the winter months in Northern California. This photo was taken in the middle of the day but with all the shade from the trees makes it feel much later.
Photo by @kevinfaingnaert // The dusty, enchanting harbour town of Labuan Bajo on Flores island in #Indonesia is the jumping off point to see prehistoric dragons at Komodo National Park and for world-class diving and snorkeling. Those like me, who will stay a little longer, will fall in love with 'Bajo'.
photo by @andrea_frazzetta | A girl walks on the rocky coastline near Ballintoy, Northern Ireland. Ballintoy lies roughly halfway between Ballycastle and the Giant's Causeway on the most scenic stretch of the Causeway Coast, with sea cliffs of contrasting black basalt and white chalk, rocky islands and broad sweeps of sandy beach. Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) // Glaciologists follow these narrow passages, meandering deeper into the ice to try and get a better understanding at the rate of melt and what influences the speed the glacier moves. Every time I have visited the Gorner glacier in Switzerland, I am immediately struck by a shrunken volume of ice and a drop from the level the glacier was last time round. It is depressing to think that one day Europe will be without these amazing glaciers.
Photo by @KenGeiger | Don't look now but you are being watched—if you are walking the boardwalk in the Yellowstone Geyser Basin, past lounging bison, you better pay attention. Yellowstone National Park in the winter is literally a wonderland. A winter visit takes a bit of planning but well worth the effort. @natgeoexpeditions#yellowstone#infrared To explore more images of the world follow @KenGeiger
Photo by @kevinfaingnaert // With its distinctive blue-and-white colour scheme, cobbled streets and jaw-dropping glimpses of azure waters, the cliff-top village of Sidi Bou Saïd is one of the prettiest spots in #Tunisia. Since the release of the song by French singer Patrick Bruel, the café Sidi Chabaane, changed its name to "Café des Délices", and became a famous place in Sidi Bou Saïd. The café, built on the side of the hill in the sixties, offers a beautiful point of view on the bay of Tunis and is a great place to have a coffee.⠀
Photo by @BabakTafreshi Scattered rocks on the barren Mars-like landscape of Atacama Desert, before sunrise. This is as close to Mars as I can get to. When I was working as a science journalist I was obsessed with the Red Planet exploration stories. There are so much mysteries to unfold in our neighboring planet. This is a tribute to @nasa Opportunity Mars Rover mission which was officially ended this week after 15 years. It “lived” longer on the surface of Mars than any other robot, far exceeded the original 90-day mission. It survived a dust storm in 2007 but a second one in 2018 blocked even more sunlight and energy. The end for the rover which drove a total of 28 miles (45 km) over years, the record for longest drive on another world. Its twin rover Spirit, on another side of the planet, was also a die hard that worked 5 years in extreme Martian environment. Incredible engineering and science achievement by the mission team at @nasajpl and leadership of my friend and mentor @firouz_michael_naderi who was NASA’s Mars program director in the 2000s which led to unprecedented 6 consecutive successful missions to #mars. Photo by @krystlejwright // As a storm system from the south chased us north along the Antarctic Peninsula, we were greeted with spectacular evenings. Easily a paradise for any photographer when dramatic light aligns with an equally magical landscape #Antarctica@natgeoexpeditions
Photo by @michaelclarkphoto // Looking over the Blacktail Deer Plateau towards the west on a wintery day here in Yellowstone National Park. On this morning the temps were a balmy -14 F (-23 C) in Gardiner, Montana and even colder in the park. I don’t even want to think what the windchill temps were. #yellowstonenationalpark#yellowstone#blacktaildeerplateau
Photo by @amivitale | A herd of wild elephants travel through the shrubby lands of Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. Here, you can see endangered Grevy's zebra, leopards, reticulated giraffes, wild dogs, kudu and elephants in ever increasing numbers. This place used to be dangerous with warring tribes and the landscape looked very different. Elephants had been all but eliminated in the area. Today, however, it is thriving. Outside of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Namunyak contains higher populations of large mammals than any other landscape (protected or unprotected) in Kenya — including the second-largest elephant population in the country, boasting more than 6,300 individuals. It's incredible to see how resilient nature is if we give it a chance.
