Picarones are the layman’s version of buñuelos, Spanish donuts brought to Peru by the Conquistadors. What makes the flavor of the donut distinct is the fact that, unlike buñuelos, the recipe was modified by enslaved black Peruvians, who made the dessert from scraps of sweet potatoes and squash, finished off with chancaca, solidified molasses that was a cheap waste product of the sugar production that dominated plantation life in Peru for centuries.

This is a little story for me to remember. But you're welcome to read it if you wish 😬. . . . . . Once upon a time a man and a woman were engaged to be married. She invited her cousins from abroad to the wedding but they had nowhere to stay, so they kipped on the floor of the brides' family small house. . . . . . At one of the pre-wedding celebrations, the youngsters' auntie - my grandma - found out about their sleeping arrangements. She categorically refused to let them remain there and immediately invited them to stay over at hers. . . . . . That's how my mum met Pancho. Throughout that summer they became super close, hanging out at the beach or walking around Miraflores. Eventually, my mum was allowed to visit Pancho in Chile. . . . . . And that's how mum met Constanza (Constance, what a beautiful name). If mum and Pancho we're close, mum and Coni were inseparable. They grew up and grew older in countries that share a border and they met up as often as they could, travel, hang out, support each other through thick and thin. . . . . Coni has known me since I was 1. She calls me her little princess, even now. My earliest memory of her is when I was around 2. I would watch her in awe as she expertly put make up on her waterline with metallic light blue liner, her eyes a sparkling green and brown. . . . . . Sitting around the table whilst she peels fruit in the morning, to make a fruit salad on which she snacks all day, she retells me stories upon stories I had never known or I had long-forgotten. She gives me little pieces of my childhood back, and my parents' life together, before there was me.

Valparaiso must be the city I've taken the most pictures of. I was wondering why the houses are all painted in bright colours and why there's so much street art, so I did some digging. After reading a few articles it seems the tradition stemmed from ore-war ships who would dock in this port when travelling from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They'd take the chance to do up their ships and any leftover paint was quickly put in use by locals. Much of the local population was made up of artists, some whom had been squatting in a former prison. They used whatever colour cans were available, so had to get creative in painting motifs and art; this protecting homes from the salty sea air! 🎨 #ididntknowthat

Meandering through Valparaiso we came across this awesome area of built up boardwalks and wooden structures in the middle of a hill. Here, young people met to drink beers and chat until late at night. At the fringes of the hill, a couple of boutique hotels/art spaces/concept stores were still open late and buzzing. Captured Chris heading towards the veranda to check out the city at sunset

Visiting viña was a bit surreal. We spent most of the time soaking up the sun before heading for a walk and we totally forgot to take a photo with the classic flower clock before we left. 😭
