Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucestershire, UK. Taken on a visit to Tewkesbury. The Abbey was founded in 1087, but building of the present Abbey did not start until 1102. Originally built to house Benedictine monks, the Norman Abbey was near completion when consecrated in 1121. Following Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, most of the claustral buildings and the Lady Chapel were quarried for their materials but the Abbey Church was sold to the parishioners. The Abbey has the largest Norman church tower in existence measuring 14 metres square and 45 metres high. #tewkesbury#tewkesburyabbey#gloucestershire#abbey#normanarchitecture#englishhistory#visit_uk#visit_england#igrejasemfoco

Walking round part of the lake at Stowe Gardens, Buckinghamshire, UK. Designed over a period of about 30-40 years using the skills of world renowned gardeners and architects starting in 1711. It was here at Stowe that Lancelot 'Capability' Brown learnt his trade experimenting, making his mark on the landscape before moving on to transform the English countryside and many aristocratic estates. He was Head Gardener at Stowe between 1741-1751. #stowegardens#buckinghamshire#uk#capabilitybrown

The resting place of Katharine of Aragon, Queen of England, Peterborough Cathedral, UK. Born 16th December 1485, Katharine became the first wife of Henry VIII and Queen of England between 1509-1533. Banished following the annulment of the marriage, Katharine died on 7th January, 1536. The funeral took place on 29th January 1536. Henry did not attend. During the English Civil War, the original tomb was vandalised by Oliver Cromwell’s troops in April 1643. The current memorial slab was installed in 1895 after a national campaign for the ‘Katharines of England’ to all donate a penny to the cause. To this day, Katharine is remembered annually with a commemorative service and series of events at the Cathedral and elsewhere in the city around the anniversary of her burial. You may notice in my picture that many visitors place pomegranates – her heraldic symbol – on her tomb. #catherineofaragon#visit_uk#peterboroughcathedral#cathedral#thetudors

The Great West Front, Peterborough Cathedral, UK. There has been a place of worship on the cathedral site since 655 AD. Initially, a monastery stood here. The current cathedral is mainly of Norman architecture and was constructed between 1118-1237. The cathedral is the resting place of Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536), Queen of England under Henry VIII. #peterborough#peterboroughcathedral#normanarchitecture#cathedral#visitengland#visit_uk#catherineofaragon#igrejasemfoco

The Painted Hall, Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, UK. This is quite a room to welcome guests. Built by the 1st Duke of Devonshire between 1689 - 1694 with the only original features being the painted decoration on the walls and ceiling. The ceiling depicts scenes from the life of Julius Caesar, by Luigi Laguerre (1663-1721). If you look carefully, he is shown with a star above his head. Much restoration has been required over the years with the ceiling almost collapsing during the 1930’s. #derbyshire#chatsworth#chatsworthhouse#paintedhall#uk#entrancehall

The salt ponds of Pedra de Lume, Sal, Cape Verde, Africa. Situated in the northeast of the island, this extinct volcanic crater is famous for these salt evaporation ponds. Production began here in the late eighteenth century, peaking at an estimated 30,000 tonnes for export, although today production is significantly reduced due to worldwide competition. Salt is what gives the island it’s name, ‘Sal’. Before the mass production of salt the island had been sparsely populated, since originally being discovered by the Portuguese in 1460. I was actually able to go for a swim, (or more accurately, a float on my back😉), in the large blue pond at the centre of the photograph. The water was warm, as this is heated from deep within the crater’s rocks. Due to the high saline content of the water, floating is extremely easy, rather like The Dead Sea that boarders Israel, Jordan and the West Bank. It made for an interesting experience. 😃👍 #pedradelume#sal#capeverde#saltpond#volcaniccrater#salt

The small bay at Buracona, Sal, Cape Verde, Africa. The trip along the bumpy road in my previous post was worth it. This part of the coastline is protected as an area of natural beauty. The waves and the tidal current here are very strong, so there was no chance of swimming on a windy day. Nearby is a natural cave formed in the lava rocks. You can peer down into the cave and see what is known on the island as ‘The Blue Eye’ looking back at you. When the sunlight hits this natural pool from the right angle, the colour turns into turquoise blue revealing "the blue eye". #buracona#sal#capeverde#blueeye#africa

Well worth the trip to see though. #buracona#sal#capeverde#africa#bumpyride#bumpyroad

Locals playing the strategy board game ‘Ouril’, in the Cape Verde Islands 🇨🇻 The game is played with seeds, known as ‘ouris’ that come from native shrubs called “ourinzeira”. Traditionally the game is played mostly by men and has it’s origins in slaves who were brought here from the west coast of Africa (Senegal and Gambia) during Portuguese colonialism that began in the fifteenth century. The rules were explained to me at the time, but it was so hot, my brain was feeling too cooked to retain the information. 😉 #sal#capeverde#palmeira#africa#boardgames#ouril
