How to make a happy wanderer: put a motorbike under me.

How to make a happy wanderer: put a motorbike under me. --- Valparaíso, Chile, is the hilliest city we've ever seen. We thought La Paz was a lot, but this is intense beyond our wildest expectations. Locals are proud to tell you it was never founded as a city, so virtually none of it is gridded or laid out in any remotely planned fashion. --- There are somewhere around 40-50 different hills in town, depending on the tourist maps you're reading, and they're all absurdly steep, with roads hooking back or ending at staircases and cliffs, all seemingly at random. Walking around for a day starting at our home up one of the hills was a goddamn nightmare, so we were ecstatic when we found a scooter rental (the only one in town!) in nearby Viña del Mar. --- After a few hours on the bikes, we knew our 24-hour rental needed to become a week. The town is so mentally stimulating; the unpredictability of the streets is matched by the wide range of street art covering what feels like every available surface. And motorbikes are by far the best way to explore these hills! . . . . . #badatstayingstill#valparaiso#nowmylegsarecompleteagain#motosofinstagram#santiagowanderersdevalparaiso#turnsoutitsafootballclub#wanderers#motorcyclechick#wearahelmet#motorbikeexploring#motorscooter#drivinguphill#happyplace#motorcyclerental#vivemotorcycle#motorcyclebabe#wanderersesvalparaiso#mural#garagedoorart#valpochile#rentamotorcycle

Dia de las Ñatitas, or, Day of the Skulls.

Dia de las Ñatitas, or, Day of the Skulls. --- Basically the main reason we went to Bolivia in the first place. Once a year, on November 8, people bring out human skulls (ñatitas), decorate them with fresh flowers, and display them. All the skulls are given offerings of coca leaves, tobacco, and alcohol. They also get sunglasses or eyes stuffed with cotton to allow them to "see." --- Sometimes they're clearly an entire family lineage, with a family surrounding them, dancing with them, and proudly talking about them with anyone who's interested. But sometimes the owner of the skull just procured it from a medical lab or elsewhere and doesn't know the identity of the deceased. --- One of the oddest, coolest, most joyous celebrations of death I've ever seen. At first I was hesitant to take photos; didn't want to disrespect anyone's culture or mourning ritual. But people were unbelievably welcoming, happy we were there, and explicitly encouraging us to take photos. One lady asked us where we were from, and then gesturing around, asked, "Muy interesante, no?". And indeed, it was. Muy interesante. --- It's so rare to get a glimpse of something so personal, so foreign, so culturally specific, and not feel like an intruder. Even though we were among the very few gringos there, I felt nothing but positivity. It was incredible. --- #badatignoringdeath#deathrituals#deathpositivity#bolivia#boliviatravel#skulls#realskulls#humanskulls#diadelasnatitas#dayoftheskulls#festivalofskulls#oddities#odditiesandcuriosities#strangeandunusual#goth#darktourism#celebration#culturalfestival#aymara#lapazcemetery#cementeriogenerallapaz#atlasobscura#morbidanatomy#latergram

We found a mo'ai! But we didn't go to Easter Island. --- According to the probably very trustworthy (but definitely very talkative) waiter we met yesterday in Valparaíso, Chile, this is one of only two mo'ai figures outside of Easter Island, and this one is scheduled to finally be returned sometime during the next month. --- The other was stolen by Pinochet in the 70s or 80s and sold to the British because he wanted to also sell them Easter Island, according to our reliable narrator. Or, alternately, a British captain stole it in 1868 and gave it to Queen Victoria, who placed it in its current British Museum home, in the slightly more well-documented version of events. --- Wikipedia is also now telling me there are quite a few (like almost 80) other heads or pieces of them around the world, stolen at various times by different countries. So that other part is maybe not exactly true, either. --- What's your favorite confidently-delivered story that doesn't quiiiite match up with the facts you learn later? . . . . . #badattruthiness#moai#easterislandhead#viñadelmar#valparaiso#museofonk#archaeology#stolenartifacts#returnstolenartifacts#gianthead#museumselfie#rapanui🗿#🗿#rapanui#talltales#smallerthanheexpected#biggerthansheexpected

Wow, Santiago! I didn't think you even knew it was my birthday, much less that you cared enough to throw me a parade! --- While trying to get back to our apartment last night, I wandered into a big crowd that turned into a much bigger crowd and then into this parade. Oops! --- Favorite bit #1: any time a balloon stopped moving forward, the crowd would chant until the people holding it spun it around (video 7), sometimes (like with Bubbles in pic 5) kiiinda crashing the balloon into the audience. --- Favorite bit #2: the doggo in pic 4 who is literally leading the whole parade. How important is a loaf of bread? --- In Santiago, Chile, so important that all this team of burly luchadores needs to do to establish themselves as wildly over babyfaces is to bring along a bag of bread, split the loaves apart, and throw the pieces to the now very excited crowd, who will then chant "marraqueta" for every move you pull off well. --- Depending on what study you're reading, Chilenes eat between 80-100 kilos of bread a year, which puts them among the most dough-hungry people on the planet. Given how amazingly good the densely chewy yet still crusty marraqueta is, I'm totally on board. Over the last three days alone, I've easily taken in about a kilo of my yearly allowance. --- Marraquetas break easily into halves or quarters, perfect for sandwich making of any size. Their density means they hold up to even the juiciest ingredients. And there's just enough sourness in the dough to mean all you really need is a little pat of butter or cheese to be happy eating them all on their own. . . . . . #badatlowcarbdieting#marraqueta#panchileno#luchalibre#clubchocolate#luchaclibrechilena#juiciofinal#breadlovers#chantforbread#ilovebread#seamomarraquetas#bread#eatbreadeveryday#highcarbdiet#carbscarbscarbs#breadisthebest

Much like in the Harry Potter universe itself, overconsumption of Butterbeer leads to stomachaches. --- We were not aware of the 2x1 on all non-booze drinks on Tuesdays. Cerro Rico, the giant mountain looming over the already 4000m+ high city of Potosí, funded the Spanish conquest of the Americas, as they pulled ton after ton of silver out of what was once the single largest silver mine on the planet. --- This bounty of riches, of course, came with unimaginably brutal conditions imposed on the enslaved locals and African slaves brought in to work the mines. Estimates vary, but somewhere in the range of 6-8 million were killed over the centuries, as the Spanish forced 24-hour shifts for men and children. --- The locals continue to work the mine, generation after generation, with life expectancies for miners around 35-40 years. The silver ore, once 90% pure, is gone, you see. But the pittance a miner can get from a lucky strike of 15% pure ore, combined with the utter lack of other job prospects, means thousands still work the toxic air of the mines. --- There's a small but strong tourism industry built around trips to the mines. We were afraid of exploiting human suffering to visit, but what we found was a surprisingly honest view into mining life, led by a multi-generational miner who got out after five years and watching his father die of silica-dust-caused lung disease. --- Where does the silver go? "into fucking iPhones" was the quick and simple response. --- 1) our DIY hazmat suits 2) the view from the entrance to the mines 3) about to head inside 4&5) exploring the claustrophobic tunnels 6&7) "el tío", statues more or less of the devil, who are given offerings of coca, cigarettes, and alcohol, in return for allowing the miners safe passage 8) a vein of low-percentage silver 9) crystals of a toxic asbestos-like mineral that turns to breathable powder when smashed or dynamited, and then becomes one of the many things down here that kills you young. . . . . . #badatblindconsumerism#darktourism#eltio#silvermining#cerrorico#potosí#potosisilver#valeunpotosí#potosibolivia#minetour#mining#eldiablo#diyhazmat#hazmatsuits#bringyourownrespirators#miningindustry#thepriceofsilver#bolivianhistory

It tastes absolutely goddamn terrible. But once you've had a few, you start craving it. It's an acquired taste that's so rapid you can watch yourself acquiring it over the course of a drink or two. --- And this drink (which translates more or less to "earthquake") is strong. Looking for a fun night out in a town where you don't know anyone or speak the language? Try a woman-fronted Queen cover band! --- Timing was interesting, and seemed to be understood implicitly in advance by everyone else - with big signs proclaiming the show starts at 9:30, we arrived fashionably late, at 10:30. At that point, the band was still doing sound check and they were still hooking up the lights. The show actually went on at midnight. --- Turns out this was a pretty fancy and late night out - table seating that offers only bottle service means the two of us got to split a liter of rum, so we ended up as ready to rock out to Queen as our new friend for the night Andrés in the video here. 😁 . . . . . #badatstayingsober#ohmenajequeen#coverbands#queen#radiogaga#bolivianrock#ronbarceló#freddiemercurytribute#queentributeband#classicrock#sucrebolivia#latenightbolivia#somuchrum#bohemianrhapsody

Two more skills learned: driving manual shift motorcycles and off-road dirt biking! --- We went with Off-Road Bolivia, the literal only place in Sucre that has motos for anything other than outright purchase. They don't have scooters to rent, unfortunately, but they do have lessons and tours of the countryside. --- They're expensive for Bolivia, at Bs 650 for a half day lesson (that can easily be a week's hostel stay), but wow was it worth it. Hey, South America! Why do you hate being able to hang up your coats and towels
Hey, South America! Why do you hate being able to hang up your coats and towels so much? --- Somehow, virtually no place we've stayed in Peru or Bolivia has had anywhere to put these things when they're wet. If you're very lucky, you'll find a single hook in the bathroom to share two people's worth of towels. And if you're very, very lucky, that hook won't be somewhere unusable, like in the shower or six inches above the back of the toilet. --- After almost three months now of searching, I finally found a place selling over-the-door hooks. At a pricey Bs 45 ($6.50 USD) I intend to carry this around forever, turning every hookless hotel room into a luxurious palace where you don't have to hang your towel over a foot or a chair, or where a coat doesn't end up thrown over a table or on a bed. . . . . . #badatbasicinteriordesign#seriouslywheredoyouhangthings#overthedoorhook#bathroomdesign#housewares#travelessentials#travelprotip#travelgear#inmysuitcase#dryingclothes#overdoor#clotheshanger#overthedoorhanger#travelneeds#badhoteldesign#hoteltips

Some days you wake up and decide you need to see the longest known dinosaur tracks in the world. And if you're in Sucre, Bolivia, you can live that dream! --- Discovered by a concrete mining and processing plant built a 15-minute drive from the center of town to rebuild Sucre after an earthquake, this several-kilometer-long limestone cliff wall used to be a flat lake bed before the Pacific plate accordioned it into a mountain. Geology is weird, y'all. --- Plus you get to wear a sexy hat - partly because the concrete mining is still happening literally right behind where I'm standing, and partly because the cliffside (and unfortunately some of its tracks) have a tendency to erode when it rains and just fall off sometimes. --- The park is in the process of trying to become a UNESCO site, in part because otherwise they won't have the money to protect these irreplaceable tracks, which some estimates say will be otherwise heavily destroyed by erosion and acidic rain by 2020. . . . . . #badatleavingnofootprints#dinotracks#parquecretacico#parquecretácico#sucrebolivia#archaelogy#ilovedinosaurs#bigfeet#fossils#bolivianfossils#futureunescosite#cretaceous#dinostagram#lookingfordinosaurs#constructionhat#cliffside#ancientstuff
