Breed spotlight time! COCHIN: Class: Asiatic Type: Large Fowl & Bantam Size: Heavy (8+ lbs) Purpose: Originally bred as a dual purpose bird, but now they are mostly exhibition APA Recognized Varieties: Black, Blue, Brown, Buff, Golden Laced, Partridge (color featured in picture), Silver Laced, White, & Barred Egg Color: Brown Egg Size: Medium Comb Type: Single Comb Special Feature: Feathered Legs & Feet Temperament: Docile, peaceful, friendly, & easily handled Brief History: Cochins (pronounced 'coach-ins') originated in China over 150 years ago. The first Cochins to leave Asia, set sail in 1843. They were sent from the French colony, Cochin, which is now known as Vietnam. They were a gift to Queen Victoria. The "Victoria Cochins" were very different than the modern Cochin - tall and lanky. Four years later, more Cochins set sail to England. Although, these birds were the plump, fluffy Cochins that we think of today. They were really "Shanghai Chickens." However, the public still called these Asian chickens "Cochins." Cochins found their way to America in 1845, where they took-off in popularity. #chicken#poultry#backyardchickens#backyardpoultry#cochin#cochinchicken#cochinhen#hen#partridgehen#partridge#partridgecochin#partridgecochinchicken#partridgechicken#showchicken#chickenfarm#치킨#농장#poultryofinstagram#chickensofinstagram#instapoultry#instachickens#닭#닭을#가금류#닭고기#鶏

@cuclucksclan asked a question the other day: "what vaccines do chickens need?" This is a very good question and one that most people often do not think about. Vaccines are generally only given to chickens while they are chicks. Most preventable (& predictable) poultry diseases appear within the first 6 months of age. Therefore, birds are usually vaccinated as chicks. Most hatcheries offer vaccines as an additional option when ordering. Depending on your country, some of the most common chicken vaccines are: Mareks Disease, Infectious Bronchitis (IB), Avian RhinoTracheitis (ART), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), and Salmonella. Coccidiosis is sometimes offered as a vaccine but feeding medicated chick starter is usually a safer route since the Coccidiosis vaccine is extremely potent and might have the potential to stunt chick growth. I hope that this answered your question! #chickens#poultry#backyardpoultry#backyardchickens#chicks#chickenhealth#vaccines
