‘Two Shores’ (2019), a work from ‘Happy Valley II’, video artist #MaHaijiao’s solo presentation at @TabulaRasa_Gallery. The piece, exhibited for the first time at #ArtBaselHongKong, consists of images of Hong Kong projected onto handmade colored paper via four small projectors. Discoveries 2019 | #artbasel

Multimedia artist #SamDurant’s works address a variety of social issues. Often referencing American history, his work explores the varying relationships between culture and politics, engaging subjects from the civil rights movement to southern rock music. Over the last 20 years, Durant has mined the image archives of international protests and demonstrations as sources for drawings and large-scale lightbox signs. In these works – for example, ‘Another World Is Possible’, shown by @BlumandPoe at #ArtBaselHongKong 2019 – hand-lettered statements are transferred from the source photographs onto a format typically associated with commercial signage and advertising. 📸 by @jaia_freitas.#artbasel

@RobinFrancescaWilliams, ‘Your Good Taste is Showing’ (2017), via @PPOWgallery, participating in Basel’s Galleries sector for the first time this June. Based in NYC, the dynamics of Downtown are one of the #PPOWgallery’s main thematic backbones. Since opening its doors in the early ‘80s, it has since shown strong engagement with a group of dauntless artists who often did not receive mainstream recognition until recently. Some, such as #MartinWong or #DavidWojnarowicz, were cut off in their prime by the tragic consequences of the AIDS crisis. Others, such as #BettyTompkins, fought the priggishness and censorship of both society at large and the artworld for years to be taken seriously. With its younger artists, P.P.O.W sticks to conceptual territories that remain uncomfortable to some – feminism, sexuality, queer politics. At show, in addition to #RobinFWilliams (pictured above), they will show works by #MarthaWilson, the late #CaroleeSchneemann, and the artists mentioned above. When #LeandroKatz was asked to create a work for #ArtBaselCities Week last year, his mind ‘immediately’ went to the #BibliotecaNacional, the Argentine writer, conceptual artist, and filmmaker shared at last week’s donation ceremony for ‘Alfabeto lunar / Lunar Alphabet’ (2018). Originally conceived in 1978 as a series of photographs capturing lunar phases and keyed to the letters of the Spanish alphabet, Katz produced this version in bronze and polished cement for the ‘Hopscotch (Rayuela)’ exhibition as a pathway into the library. The work is both a direct homage to the famed collection of astronomy books within the library’s stacks & a nod to the sidewalk tiles of #BuenosAires, which occasionally feature poems and tango steps. Collectors Amalia Amoedo, Alec Oxenford, Lodovico & Adriana Rocca, @artebafundacion’s Erica Roberts, Henrique Faria (@hffanewyork), and other private donors banded together to present the work as a gift to the @Biblioteca_Nacional_Argentina and citizens of the city during @bacultura’s #BAsemanadelarte. ＿ 🎥: @e_tiven
