A wildebeest giving birth to its calf early in the morning at Ndutu, Tanzania. I took this series in late February: this is the time of the year when more than a million wildebeest gather in the southernmost location of the annual great migration. Thanks to the heavy rains, this lush grassland is the perfect place for wildebeest to give birth and get their strength back before beginning their northward journey, starting a new cycle. It was amazing to witness how this female kept walking at the pace of the herd even with some parts of the calf exposed. It would stop and lay down on the ground only at very last moment before pushing out its baby. This behaviour is key for survival because it minimizes the chances to become a target for the numerous predators in the area. After the calf was born, in about one to two minutes it would stand and be able to run alongside its mother. .
