This is what getting gas looks like in Bolivia. You pull up to the pump, and bend over. But don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt every time. 😜 • Actually though this is how it goes. You pull up, and hopefully they are in the mood to sell gas to a foreigner. If so, they will pull out a calculator and decide how much they want to stick it to you. Then you start negotiating, hopefully landing somewhere only slightly higher than the local rate. But don’t be surprised if it’s three times higher than what the locals pay. • We heard that there has been a law passed abolishing the foreigner gas price. But, word travels slow in Bolivia, and there’s no enforcement to make the change. • We are loving the natural beauty of Bolivia so far, and are excited to see the rest of the country. I have faith that one day they will sort out this bass ackwards fuel dilemma. -Brendon - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#bolivia#southamerica

DEATH ROAD! Bolivia’s claim to fame on the list of the world’s scariest roads. Wow, it was.............quite disappointing actually. The only part that almost killed me was that we had to pay to drive it 😬. The road itself was better than some national highways we’ve ridden, and there are guardrails! • Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to dumb down the fact that many lives were lost on this road before they built a highway around it. But it should be seen as a memorial, not a thrill seekers destination while in Bolivia. There are hundreds of roads still being used throughout South America today that are far more perilous. At least a few times a week we are far more thrilled just getting from one place to another. -Brendon - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#deathroad#bolivia#southamerica

We spent four days on Lake Titicaca. Two on the Peruvian side, checking out the islands made of totora reeds and savoring our last moments in Peru. Then, two on the Bolivian side, gathering our bearings in a new country and drinking beers at sunset. At 3,808 meters, Lake Titicaca is highest navigable body of water in the world. And at 8,400 sq km, it’s also the biggest. This rickety ferry across the lake marked our true entry into Bolivia, and we are eager to find out what this country has to offer. -Kira - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#laketiticaca#peru#bolivia#southamerica

Thanks to an early Christmas gift, we got to spend our last two days in Peru doing things we normally wouldn’t - as was requested with the gift. So, here is how far a hundred Canadian dollars will go around here. • +Two nights in a fancy (for us) hotel, with breakfast included. +A boat tour out to the famous floating islands made of totora reeds on Lake Titicaca. +Dinner out at a very nice restaurant, with wine, alpaca steak, Cuy - a Peruvian must, and dessert (plus some street churros on the walk home). +Then if that’s not enough already, a half tank of gas that will see us 300km further south into Bolivia! • Thank you so much R&S!!! 💕 - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#peru#southamerica

When we first left on this journey, I wrote a blog post called “7 Simple Bike Mods for a Hassle-Free Journey.” Now - 12 countries, 15 months, and 42,000km later - it is time for a review of these seven items. Were they worth it, did they save any headaches, and what I would have done differently knowing what I know now. If you don’t read it for the motorcycle factor, at least read it to find out what we named our new sheep. The link is in our bio. -Brendon - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#peru#southamerica

The Tinajani Canyon has been home to Indigenous people since before the time of the Incas. It is obvious why this area was inhabited, with so many natural features to build from. Behind every corner is another cave or tomb begging you to take a closer look. You can’t help but get lost in the labyrinth of your imagination. - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#peru#southamerica

Peru is an amazing country with so much natural diversity, and sadly, our time here is coming to an end. • In a last minute change of plans, we decided to skip Colca Canyon. Sure, seeing the world’s second deepest canyon would have been cool, but following two weeks spent in the tourist hub (Sacred Valley), we felt we had spent enough on tourist sites for one country. (It is about $21US ($28CDN) per person just to drive the road through the canyon.) • Instead, we ventured off into some less known territory. And just like every other backroad we’ve taken in Peru, we were not disappointed. Welcome to the Tinajani Canyon. - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#peru#southamerica

We can’t understand why Rainbow Mountain gets such a bad rap. With this view on one side, and *swipe left* that view on the other, what’s not to love!? We started the hike early and only saw about a half dozen other tourists during the hour we spent at the top. All in all, it exceeded all expectations. - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#rainbowmountain#peru#southamerica

Deep in the land of Peru, in the heights of the Andes, two motorcycles have forged their way through terrible roads. Now forced into a battle ground, they must decide once and for all, who will leave victorious. One motorcycle to rule them all. - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#peru#southamerica#ktm

There are many approaches to overland travel depending on the person, the vehicle, and the activities undertaken along the way. The pack list can become a very controversial topic, what is appropriate for one person is a disgusting waste of space for another. Keeping in mind that there is no right or wrong will help you outfit yourself in a way that is beneficial to you. When you start talking about two people on a single motorcycle, your priorities need to be in order because there is certainly no room for extras. We have equipped our motorcycle in a way that best suits us, enabling us to be self sufficient for multiple days at a time. This means more than just the basic minimum of having food, water, and a tent. We also like to pass the time doing things we enjoy. Whether it is playing with photography or spending an afternoon fishing, writing about our experiences, or getting lost in a good book. We have made room to bring along some simple joys. Knowing that we can explore into an area without relying on external factors provides a security blanket for if and when the unexpected occurs. - #adventurehaks#the30thyearplan#peru#southamerica
