Today marks the 10 year anniversary of my grandmother’s passing. Her name is Sylvia Andich and we fondly called her Nannie. She is my mom’s mom and died at age 103. I made this photo of her when she was 100, while she held a photo of herself from age 26. I’m not sure if I ever saw her angry. She was a rare bird with a big heart. RIP Nannie. #portraitphotography#grandmother#aginggracefully#aging#century#portraiture#indiana#nannie

We called these swirls “doughnuts”where I grew up in rural Indiana. You find an empty parking lot with snow, slam the brakes and turn the wheel 180 degrees. When I flew over this swirly design in Pennsylvania I smiled and remembered the last time I partook in this foolish activity with @kellyraykoons in #highschool The rear end of our family Gremlin hit a light pole on a fast spin and I learned a lesson the hard way. #winterfun#snow#ice#cars#goldenhour#doughnuts#soybeanfield@thephotosociety#farmlife

After a year of massive and tragic fires in California and around the globe, it feels odd to say this is a fire started by the US government. It was a fire with several positive results. As the “Year of the Bird” winds to a close, this story is about a rare bird called “Kirkland’s Warbler”. Under natural conditions, this type of Jack Pine forest that attracts the Kirtland's Warbler is produced by fire. Lumberjacks moved across Michigan in the 1800s, and cut down most of the Jack Pine trees, resulting in wildfires burning out of control over thousands of acres. Three decades ago, the entire known population numbered only 167 breeding pairs scattered across the northern portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. But in the years since, the warbler has multiplied to more than 2,380 pairs and has spread, to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, northern Wisconsin, and across the border to Ontario. The Kirtland’s Warbler, habitually nests on the ground beneath young jack pines. And it is there that the long story of its decline and near-extinction begins. They nest almost exclusively in large tracts of jack pine between 5 to 22 feet tall. It’s not clear why Kirtland’s Warblers will nest only among young trees. But it is clear that once the stand reaches about 15 years old, the birds vacate. Fire opens the pinecones and disperses the hidden Jack Pine seeds. This symbiotic process is critical to the survival of Jack Pines and makes large scale human planting almost impossible. This photo was part of a National Geographic story that looked at myriad reasons Neo-Tropical Migratory Songbird have been in decline. My thanks to @kfmoran of the NGS. #Jackpine#Kirtlandswarbler#Michigan#fire#pinecones#songbirds#firestarter#smokey#ornithology

George H W Bush, the 41st president of the United States, died yesterday. As I looked through my archive of Bush 41 images, I wanted to find one with his wife of 73 years, Barbara, who passed away 8 months ago. They were married longer than all other presidential couples. It's not easy to find silver linings related to the tragic Woolsey fire that swept through Malibu the past several weeks. The wildfire destroyed more than 14,000 homes and 88 people were killed. Many say this is the worst fire in California history. This Zebra and his animal friends are located at a winery in Malibu. I met this guy about a month before the fire started. I fed him some veggies, exchanged a few words and said goodbye. The fire consumed and devesated 80% of this winery property including the grape vines. The massive property had horses, zebras, camels, alpacas, bison, and Stanley the Giraffe - all just 30 minutes from LA. All of the animals on the property survived. #zebra#winery#malibufire#animals#striped#malibu#stripes#blackandwhite#camaflouge

Central Kentucky is world famous for Thoroughbred horses and endless miles of rock fences. There are more rock fences here than any place in the USA. In Central Kentucky 10% of these 19th century rock fences built by Irish Immigrant stonemasons still stand. The walls are mostly built with local Limestone. The walls were made for pasture borders. All the stones are laid free-handed with no mortar and are often reffered to as dry stone walls. This property is part of a restored Shaker village in Harrodsburg, KY. The photograph was made in late October. . . . #stonewall#kentucky#explorekentucky#countingsheep#horsecountry#onassignment#shaker#shakervillageky

The hike to the top of the mountain was slightly treacherous because of dim pre dawn light, a dense canopy and a foggy trail. The goal was to photograph the village from above. When I reached the summit, the fog had barely lifted. I absolutely love fog, but today it was outstaying it's welcome. After a long wait, I heard the warning honk. The honking of Canada Geese gives you plenty of time to be ready. The gorgeous landscape made for a wonderful and memorable morning even though I didn't get the image anticipated. #Foggybottom#CanadaGeese#Fallcolors#OnAssignment@thephotosociety#forest#environment#wildlifephotography#birdspotting

Drivers beware. Especially during deer mating and hunting season, which peaks between October and December in Pennsylvania. Dear are out in full force and are more likely to venture onto roadways at dusk. Of the 3,800 reported crashes in Pennsylvania in 2017 in which a motorist hit an animal, nearly 95 percent involved a deer. I honked my horn several times as I drove away, attempting to push them away from the road. #kissing#love#deerseason#deer#matingseason#pennsylvania#rustbelt@thephotosociety#wildlifephotography
